When Swans turned to Mudlarks...
The Under 11's did the club proud today. They scratched out and magnificent 1 POINT win over Easts. It was a brilliant day for footy. Rain had made the ground damp but the conditions were cool and there was brilliant footy as a result.
The players were so excited with the win they penguin dived the length of the centre area and soon they were totally covered in thick black mud. Vivek said to me " I've never had so much fun in my whole life- we got mud in our hair, in our ears and my boots are full too"

With Aussie Rules having such a huge history of rained soaked matches it was very pleasing to see the children finally experience the joy of 'playing in a puddle.

Newtown Swans Under 10’s 2006 Season Report - scroll down to see the Match Report

The 2006 footy season started with the Under 10’s players and coaches thinking we had a good chance of winning the first ever Premiership of any Grade for the Newtown Club.

We started training on Wednesday, March 1st with a good rollup of 13 players. 5 of our players were from the 2005 Under10’s Team, which reached the Grand Final – Orson, Kuiam, Oscar, Leo & Bruno. 8 players were from the 2005 Under 9’s team – Jacob, Vivek, Rorie, Adam, Luke, Max, Sean & Daniel. Four of these were still eligible to play Under 9’s in 2006 – Luke, Max, Sean & Daniel, but the Club promoted them to make up the numbers and to give them experience. We trained each Wednesday and gradually our numbers built up to 19 by Round 1 on April 1st and to a high point of 23 by Round 7 on May 27th.

Trial Game and a Sign of Things to Come

On Sunday, March 19th we had a trial game against Maroubra and Easts at the Bus Stop Oval at Moore Park, opposite the SCG. Some of us were there at 8.30am, the agreed time, with other parents and players arriving in drips and drabs until 9.00am, game time. When we arrived at 8.30am we saw 12 Maroubra players and Coach, David Foote, already there in full footy gear each with one leg on a nearby fence doing leg stretches. They must have arrived at 8.00am. Obviously, a well organised and well disciplined team. Easts turned up like us. Maroubra cleaned us up in the trial game and we beat Easts.

The Competition Begins

In the Round 1 game against Drummoyne, the Swans piled on 5 goals by Half Time and won the game. The season was under way. In Round 2 the Swans defeated Glebe, but then lost to Easts in the school holidays and then Maroubra. At 2 wins, 2 losses, the season was looking shaky. Another loss in Round 5 and the Swans would be looking down the barrel.

The Swans beat Wests and then started to string together some wins, also defeating Glebe and Easts. Then we met the undefeated Maroubra in Round 8 on June 3rd, and lost by 21 points, which was the closest any team had got to Maroubra all year. We defeated Drummoyne again in Round 9, Round 10 against Glebe was washed out, and we defeated Wests in Round 11 on July 1st, the start of the next school holidays, and had a 7 wins, 3 losses record. The next game was scheduled for July 15th, the end of the school holidays, against Easts. This would be the battle for 2nd place on the ladder and a double chance in the finals. On a wet and windy day, Newtown held the lead throughout the game and won.

A Season of Two Halves

In reality this season was in two halves. At July 15th, after the victorious battle for 2nd spot, the Swans record was 8 wins, 3 losses. Then because of the wet weather there were no matches for them until August 12th. The Swans record after that was 1 win, 3 losses. With no game on July 8th because of the school holidays it meant that between July 1st and August 12th, Newtown and Drummoyne had played just 1 game in six weeks. The other sides did get to play a fortnight apart, which was an advantage to them. With 1 week before the finals on August 19th, this wasn’t an ideal preparation and most training sessions had been cancelled as well.

After August 12th the Swans never really got going and couldn’t recapture some of their form of earlier in the season. This was clearly disappointing for all in the club. After August 12th in 4 matches and 16 Quarters of football, the Swans only clicked into gear in 1 Quarter of football against Drummoyne.

It seemed to affect Newtown more than other clubs and many of our players needed the regular routine of a weekly match and 2 training sessions per week. Our less experienced players, last year’s Under 9’s players, were more affected. The older players, last year’s Under 10’s – Orson, Kuiam, Oscar, Bruno & Leo were less affected and still performed reasonably well in the last 4 matches. The rest of the team fell away a bit, especially when it came to the pressure of finals football.

Nevertheless, with a long disruption by wet weather, it shows we need to organise something different like indoor training and team bonding sessions and possibly some practice matches at other venues that are not washed out. After all, the washed out games were cancelled due to the state of the grounds NOT the weather on the particular days, which was fine. As Coaches we have to accept responsibility that this did not happen.

On a weekend of football, Round 16 was played on August 12th against Wests, which Newtown lost 3.6.24 to 0.0.0. A postponed Round 14 against Drummoyne was played the next day on August 13th, which Newtown won.

The Finals

Maroubra defeated Newtown in the first Semi Final. Newtown tried valiantly but just couldn’t click into gear. They had some good passages of play but were outclassed by a tough Maroubra outfit, which went straight to the Grand Final. Well done, Maroubra, you certainly are a dedicated team. Newtown had to play Easts in the Preliminary Final, with the winner playing Maroubra in the Grand Final. Easts had defeated Drummoyne in the other Semi Final.

Newtown was determined to regroup, defeat Easts and line up for a rematch with Maroubra in the Grand Final. 5 minutes before match time our best player, Orson, was injured in an accident and was out of the game. The Swannies tried to rally in the game but Easts defeated Newtown. Newtown gutsed it out and tried to get their game going and you almost felt that just one little thing would start a turning of the tide.
But it wasn’t to be. Congratulations Easts, you were the better team on the day.

Proud Achievement

Newtown can feel proud we made to the Preliminary Final. It was disappointing we didn’t go further but with a little more luck (and you need a little luck) we could have made it to the Grand Final. We’ll just have to go back to the drawing board and come back bigger and better next year. This year’s Under 10’s team was a really gutsy, courageous and spirited team and they can feel really proud of themselves. They certainly made me proud.

Winning Culture

If the Newtown Club, coaches, team managers, parents and players want to win premierships then we have to build up a winning culture in the club. This revolves around parents being dedicated to their kids and the club. We need that “C” word, “COMMITMENT”, often a sticking point in young relationships (and not so young!).

If we want a successful Club, we can’t run away from it, we must be committed and dedicated. Parents have to give up their time and money (indirectly) and make the effort.

It means nurturing the talents and skills of players, coaching and guiding them to good competitive values. It means retaining and developing good coaches. It means parents making a commitment to supporting their kids, week in, week out, during the footy season. It means parents and players developing an understanding of the winning culture the Club is trying to build up.

There are so many things for kids to do – TV, computers, holidays, going out with mates etc- that if we don’t show a lead when it comes to footy, then it will come a poor second place. If you want your kids to be good at footy and part of a team, to be valued and to shine, then let’s get behind them. Many parents do already, but we need more contributors.

Congratulations

As Coach I’m really proud of the players this season. We’ve watched their skills and characters develop. Thanks to the players, it’s been a pleasure to coach you. Thank you to the parents, who assisted throughout the year.

Orson was a great player and leader throughout the year. Kuiam, too, was really good and a consistent performer and can go a long way in the game. Oscar started the season slowly but certainly came home strongly in the last five games of the season and was one of our best. Vivek and Daniel made the transition from the 9’s with ease and were star performers, particularly in the early and middle part of the season. Leo and Bruno started slowly, but were strong, consistent players for us in the latter part of the season.

Adam and Louis showed plenty of dash and were fine contributors. Luke, Max and Chris were excellent forwards, at one point Luke was averaging 1 goal per game. Jacob and Sinead showed good defensive skills, tackling well and snuffing out many opposition attacks. Rorie and Sean showed some dash and defensive skills, and newcomers Peter, Patrick, Albert and Paris did well in their first season. Peter and Patrick certainly came on strongly as the season progressed. Keep practising, boys. Thanks, also, to Mitchell, Michael, Liam, Josh, Curtis and Ryan who helped us during the year.

A big thank you to Brendan Read, the Assistant Coach, who was a great contributor throughout the year, and not just with the kids and the footy, but with the Club website and photography.

Also, John and Renee Lane, who shared the Team Manager’s role and were a tremendous help. Also, Georgina Black for the jumpers each week and general backup and advice. Also, John Kovacevic, the Under 10’s Ground Manager, who was always there. Thanks also to Helen Moore and George Petrovic for their efforts, not just with the kids, water bottles and oranges, but the Canteen as well. Also, David McNichol for help with the water bottles. Thanks also to Russell Kiefel for help with the kids. Thanks to Michael Doherty the Under 9’s Coach, who lent us some players thoughout the year. And thanks to Trevor Hall, Under 11’s Coach, for advice and assistance and Chris Venville, Football Manager, for advice and backup.

All in all, it’s been a tremendous year for the Newtown Swans Under 10’s. I’ve learnt a lot, I hope you have too. Keep practising in the off-season. See you all again in 2007 for a bigger and better year, and we just might get our hands on that holy grail, a Premiership, for the Newtown Club.

Go you Youngbloods!

Steve Black
Under 10’s Coach

I agree with everything that Steve has mentioned above. It has been a very succesful year. ALL the players must be proud of how we played and trained. There is always room for improvement and next year is the time to work that bit harder- especially on your concentration skills. To all the parents who helped during the year thank you. Please volunteer again for next season - it is vital that parents contribute to the Club in some way. Keep kicking that ball over summer...Well done to Steve Black for his coaching efforts.
cheers,
Brendan Read

"Under 10's almost make it to their second Grand Final in 2 years" 26.08.06

The team finished second on the ladder in both points and percentage but could not convert the final two games into wins which would have seen them play against Maroubra at ADO for the Grand Final. There were a lot of tears [ parents included] after the game which shows the passion that this side has displayed all year. See some photos below supplied by Trevor Hall.

Preliminary Final 26/08/06 Newtown Swans vs Easts Bulldogs at Heffron Park, Matraville

The pictures tell the story...

After picking themselves up from the defeat by Maroubra, the Swans were ready to do battle with Easts in the Preliminary Final, the winner meeting Maroubra in the Grand Final. Unfortunately, 5 minutes before the start, our best player Orson was injured in an accident, gashing his leg and was unable to play. This clearly affected the team, but everyone tried to rally to give Easts a run for their money.

Easts were kicking with a strong wind in the 1st Qtr and kicked an early goal. The Swans battled hard into the wind but found it hard to break through the Easts defence. Oscar, Kuiam, Daniel and Adam all took good marks. In the 2nd Qtr the Swans were running with the wind and needed to kick a goal to close the gap but just couldn’t break through the Easts defence.

The 3rd and 4th Qtrs were a real arm wrestle with Easts kicking a lot of points, which is a credit to the Swans defenders. The Swans struggled hard to click into gear but just couldn’t get their game going. In the 3rd Qtr Oscar made a tremendous dash through the centre, bounced and kicked for goal, but into the wind, the ball fell short into the hands of the Easts fullback on the goal line. Before the start of the 4th Qtr, the ground echoed to cries of the Swans players saying they were going to win for ORSON! In the 4th Qtr, Leo narrowly missed a shot from the forward pocket, scoring a point. The final result was Easts 1.10.16 to Newtown 0.1.1.

Well done Easts you were the better side on the day. For the Swans, Oscar was our best player with 16 possessions, Kuiam 14, Rorie 9, Bruno 8, Louis 8, Daniel 8, Adam 8, Vivek 7. Bad luck Swans but the gods were against us on the day, losing Orson which disrupted our structure and affected our morale. Nevertheless, the team still showed great spirit and never for one minute did they give the game up. There were plenty of tears and disappointment, when the reality of the season’s end sunk in, for all concerned.

Thanks to Brendan Read, Assistant Coach, John & Renee Lane, Team Managers, John Kovacevic, Ground Manager, Georgina Black for the jumpers, and Helen Moore, George Petrovic and Russell Kiefel for their help.

THE FINALS - Newtown Swans Under10’s Match Reports, Semi Final vs Maroubra 19/08/06 & Preliminary Final vs Easts 26/08/06

Semi Final 19/08/06 Newtown Swans vs Maroubra at Goddard Park, Concord

Having secured 2nd spot on the ladder after the Home & Away Season, the Newtown Swans lined up against 1st placed and undefeated Maroubra.

The Swans battled hard in the 1st Qtr tackling like demons but Maroubra kept coming and made the most of limited opportunities and nailed 2 goals. Newtown were still in it and in the 2nd Qtr, tried to challenge Maroubra but couldn’t convert a goal. Maroubra hit the packs hard led by Abe, Hyam, Jordan & Bailey and scored 3 more long range goals.

With great team spirit, Newtown tried valiantly to rally in the 3rd Qtr and the play swept from one end of the field to the other, held Maroubra goalless for most of the Qtr, narrowly missed a goal scoring a point, then in the last 2 minutes of the Qtr, Maroubra slammed on 3 more goals to put the game beyond doubt. In the 4th Qtr Newtown were playing for pride and full credit to the battling Youngbloods for they fought the game out to the end scoring a point but Maroubra got another 3 goals. Final scores were Maroubra 10.2.62 to Newtown 0.2.2.

Congratulations to Maroubra for they put on a very good display of determined, skilful football. On the scoreboard Newtown did not get as close as the previous game with Maroubra, when it was 21 points the difference, which is the closest any side got to Maroubra all year. However, the Swans’ team spirit was tremendous in the game and after the game they were clearly devastated by the result. Orson was great for Newtown in a losing side racking up 17 possessions. Oscar, too, played one of his best games of the season. In the 4th Qtr, Orson and Oscar laid on some great tackles. Kuiam tried his heart out all through the game as did all the Swannies.

Thanks to Brendan Read, Assistant Coach, John & Renee Lane, Team Managers, John Kovacevic, Ground Manager, Georgina Black for the jumpers, and Helen Moore, George Petrovic and Russell Kiefel for their help.

Under 10’s Coach

NEWTOWN SWANS UNDER 10’S ARE IN THE FINALS!!!!

At the end of the Home & Away Season, Newtown Swans finished 2nd on the ladder, with 9 wins, 4 losses. Maroubra were undefeated on top of the ladder. Easts were 3rd, Drummoyne 4th.

This means the Swans have a double chance in the finals – a guaranteed 2 FINALS. In the Semi-Finals on Saturday, August 19th, Newtown(2) play Maroubra(1) at Goddard Park, Concord and Easts(3) play Drummoyne(4) at Five Dock Park. The winner of the Newtown/Maroubra game advances straight to the Grand Final at ADO, the loser plays the winner of the Easts/Drummoyne game in the Preliminary Final on August 26th at Heffron Park, Matraville. The winner of that game goes into the Grand Final as well.

If the Swans win 1 of their guaranteed 2 finals, they will be in the Grand Final, which will be played at OUR HOME GROUND, Alan Davidson Oval on September 2nd, 2006.
So good luck Swannies, go for it!

A Weekend of Football

Last Saturday, August 12th, Newtown played 5th placed Wests at Picken Oval – Round 16. Due to all the wet weather, Newtown was very rusty, having not played football since July 15 against Easts in the battle for 2nd spot on the ladder. Wests had played a fortnight before, but let’s not make any more excuses, they were clearly the better side on the day, defeating a disjointed Swans’ side, 3.6.24 to 0.0.0. Our best were Oscar, Leo and Louis. As our form showed during the year, the Swans were a better side than what they showed on this day.

Last Sunday, August 13th, Newtown played Drummoyne at ADO in the previously washed-out Round 14 game. The Swans returned to some good form with some exciting passages of play. The Swans won 2.0.12 to 0.5.5. Our best were Kuiam, Oscar, Bruno, Leo, Daniel, Louis, Adam, Jacob and Patrick.

Finals Time

So Youngbloods, the time for the finals is here. Can the Under 10’s Swannies of 2006, win the first ever flag of any grade for the Newtown Club? Can they topple the undefeated Maroubra? Even red-hot favourites CAN be beaten on the day and remember underdogs CAN cause an upset. Remember how Adelaide looked unassailable on top of the ladder 3 weeks ago and then 2nd placed West Coast thrashed them by 82 points! If we believe we can beat Maroubra, then we’re half way there!

Let’s go for it Swans and good luck in the Finals Series.
For last weekend, thanks to Brendan Read, Assistant Coach, John Lane & Renee Lane, Team Managers, John Kovacevic, Ground Manager, Georgina Black for the jumpers, David McNichol, Helen Moore & George Petrovic for the water bottles and Russell Kiefel for assistance.

Under 10’s Match Report Newtown Swans vs Easts Bulldogs at Alan Davidson Oval 15/07/06

THE YOUNGBLOODS BRAVE WIN!

In the spirit of the Newtown Bloods, the original Newtown Aussie Rules team, the Under 10’s fought out a brave win against Easts at ADO on Saturday. This was the battle for 2nd place on the ladder, which gives a double chance in the finals. With players away on school holidays for both Newtown and Easts, both sides played some under 9’s to make up the numbers to 15 a side. For Newtown Curtis, Michael and Ryan helped us out. Well done boys! Luke courageously played even though he had an injured ankle. Our Captain was Orson, Vice Captain Jacob. The conditions were wet, windy and muddy and the Swans were running with the wind in the 1st Qtr. The Captain, Orson, urged his team to use the wet conditions to our advantage and the “youngbloods” prepared to go on field to chants of “the mud is our friend”!

Newtown got off to an early lead when Curtis put his body on the line and helped to set up an early goal by Max, but took a heavy knock. Curtis had to come off at the end of the 1st Qtr. But well done Curtis. Easts came back at the Swans and scored a goal and scores were locked up at the end of the Qtr, Swans 1.0.6 to Bulldogs 1.0.6. Daniel had 7 possessions, Vivek 4, Adam 3, and a great goal, Max.

In the 2nd Qtr, with both sides reduced to 14 players, the Swans were running against the wind. Orson kicked a great early goal with a good kick. Most of the play was then down in Easts forward line and they kicked 3 points. Inaccurate kicking cost them dearly, but there was good pressure from the Swans defenders. The half time score was Newtown 2.1.13 to Easts 1.3.9. Orson had 4 possessions, Leo 4, Luke 4, Vivek 1 kick & 4 tackles and Peter battled hard for the team.

In the 3rd Qtr, Under 9’s player, Ryan Martin, volunteered to play for the Swans and both sides again played 15 players. However, Luke soon succumbed to his ankle injury and we were back to 14 per side. It was tough, scrappy, wet game and it was difficult to get the ball. All players were battling hard and the Swans were tackling ferociously. Newtown scored 2 points and Easts were held scoreless. The score at the end of the Qtr was Swans 2.3.15 to Bulldogs 1.3.9. Newtown was 1 goal in front but running against the wind in the last Qtr. Daniel had a big Qtr, with 5 kicks, 1 mark and 5 tackles, Vivek 3 kicks, 3 tackles, Kuiam 2 kicks, 1 mark (a beauty!), 1 handball, 1 tackle, Max 1 kick, 1 mark, 5 tackles, Sinead 6 tackles, Rorie 2 kicks, 1 mark, but all players were tackling and contributing.

In the 4th Qtr there was an early goal to the Swans through Leo. Great effort Leo! The Swans were 2 goals in front. Easts were battling hard and kicked 2 points to reduce the margin to 10 points. With 2 minutes to go, Easts kicked a goal to make it 4 points the difference. The game was in the balance with one straight kick in it. However, the Swans held firm and Leo kicked a sealing goal on the hooter, which made 2 goals to Leo for the Qtr. Leading from the front our Captain, Orson, had a big Qtr with 3 kicks, 1 handball and 4 tackles. He was a tower of strength. Likewise, Vivek had a big Qtr with 5 kicks 1 handball, 4tackles, Adam had 1 kick, 4 handballs, 1 tackle, Peter had 2 handballs and 3 tackles and Daniel 2 kicks, 3 tackles. Ryan took a good mark playing his first game of competitive football. Well done Ryan!

Best players for the Swans were Orson, Vivek, Daniel, Leo, Kuiam, Adam, Sinead , Max, Rorie and Peter but all players battled hard in the wet. Bad luck Easts, it was a hard fought game, in the battle for 2nd place on the ladder. The YOUNGBLOODS did themselves proud!! It was a great team effort with great team spirit.

Thanks to Brendan Read, Assistant Coach, John & Renee Lane, Team Managers, John Kovacevic, Ground Manager, Georgina Black for the jumpers and Helen Moore and George Petrovic for the oranges, also to Michael Doherty the under 9’s Coach for the water bottles, and Geoff Martin and Eddie Greenaway for their help.

Steve Black
Under 10’s Coach

ps: What a game- it goes to show important it is to play four quarters of footy. On a cold and windy day you all put in a very brave effort. Sinead is becoming one of our top defenders - this week she had 6 tackles in the third quarter! Thanks to Michael, Curtis and Ryan we could not have won without you. Go the 'YOUNGBLOODS'
Brendan - Assistant Coach

Under 10’s Match Report Newtown Swans vs Wests Magpies at ADO, 1/7/06

Newtown needed to consolidate 2nd position on the ladder, Wests were trying to break into the top 4 for the finals.

Our Captain was Bruno Kelson, Vice Captain Peter Boyd. We had 17 players, which meant 2 on the interchange bench.

The 1st Qtr was a tight struggle and the Swans had more of the ball, but their skills let them down at vital stages. Wests had the wind in their favour and edged in front, kicking 1.1.7 to the Swans 0.0.0 .

In the 2nd Qtr Newtown started to get their act together. After good lead up play by the Swans, Daniel snapped truly for goal. He also kicked another point and missed a set shot on goal. The scores at half-time were Wests 1.1.7 to Newtown 1.1.7. To half-time Oscar had 14 possessions, Daniel 12, Kuiam 9,Vivek 8, Orson 5, Adam 5, Peter 3, Patrick 3, Bruno 3, and Leo 3. Right on half-time Chris was injured and an ambulance was called as a precautionary measure. Everyone will be pleased to know that his dad said he’s OK.

As a result the 3rd Qtr was delayed for 30 minutes. When played resumed the Swans players said that they’d “win it for Chris”. However they were a bit disjointed and this Qtr was a rerun of the first. Wests edged ahead again, leading 2.3.15 to Newtown 1.2.8. Bruno was our best player in this Qtr.

At the end of the 3rd Qtr a message came through from Chris for his teammates that he was OK and to win the game for him. And the Swans came out firing, playing some attractive, skilful football. Newtown got on top, locked the ball up in their forward zone and Wests couldn’t get the ball past the centre for the whole Qtr. The Swans skills clicked into place, their kicking, marking and determination all improving. Newtown kicked 3 goals in this Qtr, 1 to Luke, 1 to Leo and 1 to Kuaim. Luke continues to be a regular goal scorer for the Swans. Leo’s goal was a gem, where he spun away from a would-be tackler and kicked accurately. Kuaim took 3 great marks in this Qtr and kicked 1.2 goals. Orson & Louis played well in this Qtr, Orson having 7 possessions and Louis 5.

Final scores were Newtown 4.5.29 to Wests 2.3.15.

It was a great come from behind win for Newtown. Bad luck Magpies, you pushed us hard all the way. The Swans showed very good team spirit and played well as a team. Our best players were Kuiam, Daniel, Oscar, Orson, Bruno, Leo, Vivek, Luke, but all players were fine contributors.

Thanks to Brendan Read, Assistant Coach, who fronted up even though he’d had a major shoulder operation 2 days before hand. Also John and Renee Lane, Team Managers, John Kovacevic, Ground Manager, Georgina Black for the jumpers, David McNichol for the water bottles and Helen Moore and George Petrovic for the oranges.

Steve Black
Under 10’s Coach
ps: I thought Leo's goal was one of the best for the year- his lightning fast 'dummy' was a joy to watch. Chris was very brave and I want to thank everyone including the Wests team for helping get him to hospital safely. The team won it for you Chris.
Cheers,
Brendan -Assistant Coach

UNDER 10’S MATCH REPORT NEWTOWN SWANS Vs DRUMMOYNE POWER AT ADO 17/06/06

This was a game between 3rd placed Swans and 4th placed Power. Newtown had beaten Drummoyne by 5 goals in Round 1 and was confident of winning. Our Captain was Oscar Read, Vice-Captain Chris Arney. We had 17 players with 2 on the interchange bench.

In the 1st Qtr the Drummoyne defence was good and the Swans forwards were not firing. The team looked a bit lethargic and could not penetrate. A big kid for Drummoyne took several marks in the last line of defence and repelled the Swans attack. The Power made more of their chances, scoring 1.1.7. to Newtown 0.1.1. Jacob took a good mark in defence in the goal square and touched another on the goal line, otherwise Drummoyne would have been further in front. Clearances from the backline were a problem for Newtown. The Swans had more of the ball but were behind on the scoreboard. Vivek had 4 kicks, Leo 3 and a mark, Orson 2 kicks and 1 handball, Daniel 3 kicks , Patrick 3 kicks.

In the 2nd Qtr Vivek just missed a shot for goal, the coaches and supporters on the sideline thinking it was a goal, but alas, no. Right on half-time, Drummoyne got a free kick in front of goal, kicking the goal after the siren. The score was Drummoyne 2.2.14. to Newtown 0.2.2. The Swans had more of the ball but were generally not kicking wisely to a target and gave away a lot of free kicks with tackling (over the shoulder and in the back) and once for soccering the ball. The Swans still looked a bit lethargic and the Coach asked them at Half-Time if they’d “had their weetbix or vegemite for breakfast”. Full credit to the Power for they were really taking the game to the Swans and an upset looked like it could be on the cards. The Coaches reminded the players to stick to their game and things should turn around. We needed 2 goals to get back into the game.

In the 3rd Qtr the Swans’ kicking was more accurate but there was still trouble spreading out, making space and position. The Swans were getting the ball into the forward line and goals to Orson and Kuiam tightened the contest right up. The Swans defence was great and Drummoyne were held scoreless. At the end of the 3rd Qtr, the scores were even, Drummoyne 2.2.14. to Newtown 2.2.14. Best for the Swans with possessions and tackles were Leo, Daniel, Chris and Orson.
In the 4th Qtr the Swans applied the pressure with nice teamwork and plenty of accurate passing. There were some very good passages of play especially between Chris, Bruno, Orson, Vivek and Daniel. Bruno kicked a point and the Swans were in front. The Swans were getting on top. Drummoyne could not get the ball out of their backline and the Swans were able to lock the ball up in that zone. Finally after some good passing, Luke took a great mark just outside the goalsquare and goaled from the set shot. Well done Luke! And well done Leo who drew 2 Drummoyne players to himself to make space for Luke. That is what the game is all about – doing the little things for the sake of the team. Jacob also played well on the forward line. Drummoyne fought it out and the last couple of minutes were in their forward line but the Swans held up to the pressure. Final scores were Newtown 3.3.21. to Drummoyne 2.2.14. Vivek had a great last Qtr, tackling well and winning many possessions. Also good in the last Qtr were Orson, Oscar, Chris, Max, Daniel, Luke and Bruno.
Well played Drummoyne for they really gave Newtown a close contest. The best for the Swans were Vivek, Daniel, Orson, Leo, Chris, Luke, Jacob and Patrick. Kuiam took on a lot of the rucking duties and although a little subdued by his standards did a real job for the sake of the team. All in all it was a good team effort, especially in the 2nd Half.

Thanks to Brendan Read, Assistant Coach, John and Renee Lane, Team Managers, John Kovacevic, Ground Manager, David McNichol for the water bottles and Helen Moore and George Petrovic for the oranges.

ps "Cool Hand Luke wins the game"...I wanted to make a special mention of Luke's courageous mark in front of goal in the last quarter. He steadied himself and got back far enough from the mark so that he didn't kick it into the opposition player. It was a strong and straight kick that won us the match...way cool Luke!!
I also want to mention Jacob - he has been taking some great chest marks lately both at training and during games.

Under 10’s Match Report Newtown Vs Maroubra at Alexandria Park 3/6/06

Maroubra was on top of the Competition, undefeated, and Newtown in second place, with Easts close behind. The Swans aim was to be competitive and make this a real contest and try to knock off the competition leaders.

Our Captain was Kuiam, Vice Captain Sinead , with 6 on the interchange bench. Maroubra had 15 players, with no interchange.

The 1st Qtr was a fierce tackling contest, with Maroubra getting an early goal. The Swans stuck to their task and applied a lot of pressure as did Maroubra. As a result there were numerous turnovers and both sides found it hard to break free. When Maroubra kicked another goal late in the Qtr they looked to be establishing the ascendancy. Scores were Maroubra 2.2.14. to Newtown 0.0.0. For the Swans, played well in the ruck, KuiamOrson was good from centre-half back, Leo, Patrick, Sinead, Max tackled well and all players put in.

The 2nd Qtr was a real arm wrestle with the Swans tackling hard and stifling the Maroubra attack. Bruno took a great mark in defence and just on the half time hooter, Vivek was awarded a 50 metre penalty and goaled. All Newtown players made an even contribution from all three zones. The Swans won the Qtr and scores were Maroubra 2.4.18. to Newtown 1.0.6.

The 3rd Qtr began with Newtown well in the contest. Kuiam took a mark in the forward zone and narrowly missed the set shot for a point. In defence, the Swans became a bit loose, not marking their players tightly enough. As a result a Maroubra forward broke free, was not challenged and kicked to a big forward in the goal-square, who goaled from the set shot. Vivek came to life after that, tackling well and marking Maroubra’s star player really tightly. The whole team lifted and tackled fiercely. Unfortunately, Maroubra had skipped away to lead 3.4.22. to 1.1.7. at the end of the 3rd Qtr and the Swans needed three goals to win in the last Qtr. Not impossible, but a tall order.

In the 4th Qtr Maroubra was reduced to 14 players, so we lent them a player for the Qtr. Well done Peter! The Qtr was again a real battle. Luke goaled for the Swans. (This made 5 goals in three weeks.) However, Maroubra started to get on top and kicked 2 goals to the Swans 1 goal. The Swans battled hard. Final scores were Maroubra 5.5.35. to Newtown 2.2.14.

Well done Maroubra, you were worthy winners! All in all, the Swans really took it to Maroubra and gave them their closest contest by any team so far this year. The Swans reduced Maroubra’s winning margin from the first time we met them. Our team made it a very good contest and were very competitive. All players made a fine team contribution. Defensively the Swans were very good, but need to further develop their ball handling and attacking football skills. Orson, Kuiam, Bruno, Patrick, Leo, Vivek and Peter were among our best but all players contributed well. There were many positives for the Swans and team spirit was very high and the Swans can certainly improve.

We need to train hard twice a week and all parents are reminded that for players to be competitive and get enjoyment from the game, they need to continue to get fitter and practice their football skills.

Training twice a week is compulsory and players need to be on time. They need to be on time on game day, as well. If there is a problem with either, please ring either myself (0428 967 516) or Brendan (0407 899 189)

As we have a large interchange bench, sometimes as large as 8 players, attitude to training, turning up for training and to games, and being on time to training and games, is a factor in determining who gets the most game-time.

Other factors such as attitude, skill, team contribution (also by parents), length of service, etc are also taken into consideration. Obviously, players who have just joined the team, need to show their worth to the team and need to fight their way into the team to get more quarters of football.

We will endeavour to give all players at least two quarters, however, managing such a large interchange bench remains a real juggling act and some tolerance by parents and players would be appreciated by the coaches.

Thanks to Brendan Read, Assistant Coach, John Lane and Renee Lane, Team Managers, Georgina Black for the jumpers, David McNichol for the water bottles and John Kovacevic, Helen & George Petrovic for their help.

Under 10's Match Report 27.5.06 Newtown Vs Easts at ADO

Our Captain was Leo Kiefel, Vice Captain Max Petrovic. Newtown had 23 players, which meant 8 on the interchange bench. Last time these sides met, Easts defeated Newtown in a tight scrappy game. With several players away at that time, because of the school holidays, this time the Swans had a full side and were determined to make it a real contest.
The 1st Qtr was tough and tight, with both defences working hard. The play was mainly in the Swans forward half, with fierce tackling. Luke Taylor kicked 1.1 goals, Chris kicked 2 points. Orson, Vivek and Adam were very good out of the Centre and Bruno got a few touches on the forward line. The score at the end of the 1st Qtr was Swans 1.3.9. to Easts 0.1.1.
The 2nd Qtr was again tight, with great tackling and both sides trying to get on top. Neither side scored a goal. At the end of the Qtr the score was Newtown 1.5.11. to Easts 0.3.3. Oscar scored a behind and one was rushed for the Swans. A feature for the Swans was a very even contribution by nearly all players with possessions shared around and Mitchell , perhaps, our best player in this Qtr. The Swans looked slightly on top but the game was still up for grabs.
In the 3rd Qtr the Swans looked to be edging in front but just couldn’t nail a goal. Orson, Kuiam, Mitchell and Adam played well and racked up a few possessions. Leo and Mitchell kicked points. The Swans defence was again very good. The score was Swans 1.7.13. to Easts 0.4.4. With the score so tight, the Swans were looking the better side but Easts were still capable of winning.
In the 4th Qtr, however, the Swans were not going to let this one get away and they kept the pressure on. They still couldn’t kick that elusive goal and everyone was on the edge of their seats, but finally, mid way through the Qtr, they nailed the sealing goal. In this Qtr, Orson was heroic, Sinead tackled well and Oscar was good out of the Centre, but it was a fine team effort. Orson kicked that goal and Luke kicked a point. The final score was Newtown 2.8.20. to Easts 0.6.6.
Teamwork and backing up was a feature of the Swans game. Bad luck to Easts, they put up a great fight. They did seem a bit surprised at the result, but no doubt will regroup for the next clash.
For the Swans Orson was tireless and was our best player. He marked, kicked and handpassed well and kicked that winning goal. Kuiam and Leo( Captain), although they didn’t get the most possessions, did what the coach asked of them, making fine contributions, particularly in defence, for the good of the team. Oscar and Mitchell won plenty of the ball and Adam had a fine game. Sinead did some great tackling. Luke, Chris and Bruno were good, especially on the forward line. Viv and Daniel did what was asked of them by the coach, particularly out of the Centre, marking their opponents well and kicking straight to our players. Vivek was very good in the 1st Qtr and Daniel was tough and really hard at the ball and in the 2nd Qtr he tackled Easts biggest player head-on, holding up Easts’ attack in just enough time for the Swans to regroup. Patrick also battled hard for the ball and Chris had a good game.
The main thing that must be emphasized, though, is that it was a great TEAM effort. Well done Swans!
Thanks to Brendan Read, Assistant Coach, John Lane and Renee Lane, Team Managers, Georgina Black for the jumpers etc, David McNichol for the water bottles, Helen Petrovic & George Petrovic for the oranges and John Kovacevic, Ground Manager.

UNDER 10’S MATCH REPORT, NEWTOWN SWANS VS GLEBE GREYHOUNDS AT JUBILEE OVAL, 20/05/06

Our Captain was Orson , Vice- Captain Daniel . Newtown had 18 players, with 3 on the interchange bench.

The 1st Qtr was tough and it was hard to break free for both sides. With some good lead up play by the Swans, Luke kicked a goal. Daniel had 6 kicks in this Qtr and possibly took the gutsiest mark of the day, running in the same direction as the ball. Max also took a great mark. Patrick had 3 kicks, Oscar 2 kicks and a handball, 2 kicks and 1 mark. Newcomer,Orson Josh , had 2 kicks. Well done, Josh! Scores at the end of the 1st Qtr were Swans 1.1.7 to Glebe 0.0.0.

The 2nd Qtr saw Newtown skip out to a three goal lead, with 2 great goals from Oscar , one a running shot for goal the other from a free kick. Nice conversion, Oscar! The lead could have been greater, when Daniel snapped for goal, shaving the goalpost for a point. However, the game did seem closer than the score suggested and sure enough the Greyhounds came back strongly, getting the better of the play in the 2nd half of this Qtr, kicking 2 late goals. The Swans marking of opposition players became a bit loose and needed to tighten up. The Half-Time score was Newtown 3.2.20 to Glebe 2.0.12 and it was still anyone’s game, although, as the score suggested, the Swans did seem the better side in the 1st Half. Orson had 3 kicks in this Qtr, with Vivek, Patrick, Adam and Max, all having 2 kicks.

In the 3rd Qtr the Swans came out firing. They tackled in groups, applied the pressure and backed each other up with the ball. Orson was on fire, with 7 kicks, 2 handpasses and kicking 1.1. Chris snapped a great goal and Leo kicked a goal too. Patrick had 2 kicks, 1 handpass, Louis had 3 kicks, Leo 1 mark, 2 kicks, Max 2 kicks and Bruno made a good tackle and had 1 kick and 1 handball. Glebe was held scoreless, scores being Newtown 6.3.39. to Glebe 2.0.12.

In the 4th Qtr, Glebe kicked the first goal, reducing the margin, but the Swans kept the pressure on, Luke kicking his second goal. Glebe kicked 2 more points. Orson again racked up the possessions, with 4 kicks and a mark. Max had 2 kicks, Louis, Viv, Leo, Chris, Daniel and Sean all had 1 kick, with Sinead, Bruno and Patrick 1 handball each. The final score was Swans 7.3.45 to Greyhounds 3.2 20.

It was a good team effort by the Swans, with good team-tackling, marking up and backing up with the ball. Our best were Orson, Daniel, Oscar, Patrick, Luke, Max, Leo, Chris and Bruno. Sinead tackled well, Jacob Kovacevic was more competitive, Peter Lawrence-Boyd was involved in the packs, Josh and Sean had their best game to date and newcomer, Liam was more involved.

Thanks to Brendan Read, Assistant Coach, John and Renee Lane Team Managers, Georgina Black for the jumpers, David McNichol for the water bottles, Doug Turnbull for filling as team runner (while Brendan is injured) and John Kovacevic for their help.

Under 10’s Match Report, Round 5, Newtown Swans Vs Western Suburbs Magpies at Picken Oval, 13/05/06

Our Captain was Oscar Read, Vice Captain, Rorie Seddon. The Swans had 19 players, which meant 4 on the interchange bench.

Both sides were desperate for a win, as it had been 2 losses in a row for Newtown and 3 losses in a row for Wests.

In the 1st Qtr, both sides were hard at the ball and were feeling each other out. There was tight defence and tackling and it was hard to break free for both sides. The game see-sawed from the centre to each side’s forward line but the defences on both sides dominated. It was scrappy at times with some poor disposals and it was hard to win clean possessions. Orson Heidrich, Oscar Read, Vivek Sainju, Daniel Black and Adam Lane all had 3-5 possessions. There was no score at the end of the 1st Qtr.

The 2nd Qtr was again tight, but with Orson and Leo Kiefel getting some ball out of the Centre, Vivek and Daniel were showing plenty of dash on the half forward line. Left footer, Daniel, kicked well to his players on four occasions and snapped a great goal which broke the deadlock. The game tightened up again and Wests came back at Newtown, scoring a late goal. The score was all tied up at half time, Swans 1.1.7 to Magpies 1.1.7.

The 3rd Qtr was tight again, with both defences dominating. With Sydney without decent rain for a couple of months, plenty of players literally bit the dust of Picken Oval. Clouds of dust swirled up as players tackled and scrambled for the ball, with someone commenting that it was more like a game in the Outback. Patrick McNicholl showed plenty of grit and took a hard knock. Max Petrovic, Bruno Kelson, Luke Taylor and Daniel all had a few possessions. There was no addition to the score in this Qtr, so the game remained all tied up.

In the 4th Qtr, the Swans were desperate to win and all team members were fired up and really put in a big effort. Kuiam David-Anu came to life and kicked a long goal and narrowly missed another one, kicking a point. Wests then came hard at the Swans and Vivek, Oscar and others made some great tackles in the centre zone, which snuffed out Wests’ attacks. When Wests did get the ball into their forward line, Orson stood tall at fullback (good move Brendan) and took a couple of great marks, and turned the Magpies around. Max took a couple of fine marks under pressure, Daniel again racked up a few possessions and Louis Kelson, coming off the interchange bench had 4 kicks. The pressure was on until the final siren, the Swans winning 2.2.14 to Wests 1.1.7.

For the Swans it was great to be winners again and all players burst into the Club Song after the game. Bad luck Wests you certainly made a great contest of it.

The Swans best were Vivek, Daniel, Orson, Kuiam, Leo, Oscar and Max. Rorie and Adam were fine contributors and Bruno had his best game this year, but all team members made a contribution. It was a fine team effort.

Thanks to Brendan Read, Assistant Coach, John and Renee Lane, Team Managers, Georgina Black, team jumpers, David McNichol, water bottles, Helen and GeorgePetrovic and John Kovacevic for their help.

UNDER 10’S MATCH REPORT NEWTOWN SWANS VS MAROUBRA SAINTS AT ALAN DAVIDSON OVAL 06/05/06

Our captain was Leo Kiefel and Vice Captain, Luke Taylor.
Maroubra came out firing and kicked 3 quick goals which set the tone for the match. The Swans were a bit shellshocked at the end of the 1st Qtr, but regrouped and made a contest of it in the 2nd Qtr. Neither side scored in the 2nd Qtr.

In the 3rd Qtr the Saints outscored the Swans 2.4 to 1.1, but the Swans were still competitive.

The Swans were 4 goals down at the start of the 4th Qtr and fought the game out. Maroubra scored 1 more goal to finish with 6. The final score was Maroubra 6.9.45 to Newtown 1.2.8.

Well done Maroubra and well done Swans for fighting the game out. The Swans defence was always under pressure but battled hard, particularly for the 2nd, 3rd & 4th Qtrs. Newtown had some good passages of play, with good kicking and marking skills and movement of the ball. This is promising.

Maroubra are a very good side and turn up to play. The Swans let themselves down a bit and can play much better. They need to work harder at their game and train well.
Orson Heidrich, Oscar Read, Vivek Sainju, Leo Kiefel, Adam Lane and Daniel Black all played well and got their hands on plenty of the ball, although they need to strive to be a little more accurate with their disposals. Rorie Seddon kicked a goal. Well done Rorie!
The Swans need to work on their teamwork and basic skills, going-in hard for the ball, handballing, kicking and marking. Set play Ruck Work and Roving Work needs to be practiced.
Thanks to Brendan Read, Assistant Coach, John and Renee Lane, Team Managers, Georgina Black for the jumpers, David McNicholl, Helen & George Petrovic for the water bottles and oranges, and John Kovacevic, Ground Manager.

Under 10’s Match Report Newtown Swans vs Easts Bulldogs at Alan Davidson Oval 29/04/06

With senior players away for various reasons ( Orson Heidrich, Leo Kiefel , Oscar Read, Mitchell Luff, plus Chris Arney), it gave other players a chance to shine. We had 16 players, which meant 1 on the interchange bench. Our Captain was Bruno Kelson and Vice Captain,Vivek Sainju.

The First Qtr was a real arm wrestle. It was a battle of defences, with fierce tackling, tight packs, scrappy play and it was hard to break free for both sides.
The Second Qtr was much the same with 1 goal to Easts and 2 points to the Swans.
The Third Qtr saw the wind get up and favour Easts, who gradually got on top. Easts kicked 2 goals to 1 point for the Swans, making the score 3.0.18 to 0.3.3.

The Swans needed 3 goals to win the game in the Last Qtr and were running with the wind. It was a credit to the Swans that they didn’t give the game away & came out firing. The Swans kicked an early goal ( Patrick McNicholl) and were 9 points behind – 2 straight kicks. The game really tightened up and the Swans had a sniff of victory. But Easts held firm and took some vital marks in defence.

The Swans did have some chances - Captain, Bruno Kelson, had a set shot for goal, but it fell short, and Patrick had a long shot from near the centre, but the ball tantalisingly bounced across the face of goal and out of bounds. Easts then got the ball away and it again became a real battle of defences, with more big packs of players. Easts were able to lock the ball up in their forward line and in the centre and wind the clock down, but not before some anxious moments for their supporters.

The last 5 minutes of the Qtr was in the Easts forward line and they kicked 4 points. There were a couple of breakouts by the Swans, but it fell down across the centre or forward lines. The final score was Easts 3.4.22 to Newtown 1.3.9.

Full credit to the Easts Bulldogs, for they turned up to play and broke through for their first win of the season.
For the Swans, Kuiam Anu, was very good, winning plenty of the ball, spoiling the opposition, having good positional play and generally reading the game well.

Vivek Sainju won the ball tirelessly and Patrick McNicholl was a much improved player, fighting hard for the ball and kicked a good goal. Louis Kelson played well for the 3 Qtrs he was on the field. Max Petrovic played his best game to date, with some fine marks, particularly in the first half, scrapped hard for the ball and has improved his kicking. Daniel Black took several good pack marks and played–on quickly, with one really sharp, accurate kick to a teammate. Jacob Kovacevic saved a goal on the goal-line and made some good spoils in defence.
  • Generally, the Swans were very good in defence, in scrapping for the ball in the packs and in backing each other up.
  • However, we need to work on staying on our feet as much as possible. Why? Because, if you go to ground you’re out of the contest.
  • We need to get the ball out of the centre packs with clean hands, with less fumbles.
  • On Saturday it was too crowded in the packs, so we need to spread out and make position on the edge of the rucks and make position on the wings and flanks. Our players need to read the play and leave their opponent. We need to encourage decision-making.
  • Our handballs and kicks to a target need to be more accurate.
  • Our players have got to get to the contest for the ball, run hard to make it, punch, spoil or take clean possession and get it away quickly.
Even though the Swans went down, they showed great team spirit to fight the game out to the end. And well done, James Howard, on his new umpiring role.

Thanks to John and Renee Lane, Team Managers, John Kovacevic, Ground Manager, Georgina Black for the jumpers and David McNicholl for the water bottles.

UNDER 10’S MATCH REPORT NEWTOWN SWANS Vs GLEBE
At Jubilee Oval, 8.4.06

Another magnificent win to the Newtown Under 10's
Well done to ALL players.

This was the 2nd away game in a row for the Swans. We welcomed back Mitchell Luff, who plays every second game with the Swans and the other games for Nelson Bay, due to family reasons. We also welcomed back Sinead Martin, who made a late decision to play again this year. Also appearing for the Swans was first-timer Liam Richardson. A big welcome to Liam. Leo Kiefel was away on holiday and Max Petrovic was sick. Kuiam David-Anu was our Captain and Adam Lane, Vice Captain.

The 1st Qtr was close, with 2.0 goals to the Swans, 1.1goals to the Greyhounds. The Swans got 2 early goals and then Glebe tightened the game up, with most of the second half of the quarter in their half of the ground, but they couldn’t convert that into goals more than once. Newtown’s defence was strong, with some tough tackling, pressure and spoiling.

The umpire enforced a strict interpretation of the tackling rule i.e. you can bump or tackle a player (below the shoulder and above the knee, but not in the back) but you are not allowed to bring an opposition player to the ground or sling them to the ground. 6 or 7 free kicks went against the Swans in the 1st qtr, which meant Glebe had a lot of the ball. We talked about this at Qtr Time and Half Time and, although it was still a problem for the Swans in the 2nd Qtr, in the 2nd Half the Swans tackled much better, within the Rules. We also talked about accepting the umpire’s decisions and getting on with the game. It was a good lesson for the Swans coaches, players, parents and supporters to know the Rules, and realise that the umpire’s interpretation will be strict, as per the AFL’s guidelines for younger players. It is better to learn that lesson now, rather than later in the season.

The 2nd Qtr was also close, with 2.1 goals to the Swans, 1.1 goals to Glebe, which meant it was 4.1.25 to 2.2.14, with Newtown 11 points up at Half Time. The Greyhounds were putting-up a good fight, but the Swans were gradually getting on top. At Half Time and _ Qtr we talked about the importance of fighting a game out to the end and keeping on the pressure. (At training on Wednesday we also talked about the possibility of being 5 goals behind, like Drummoyne were the previous Saturday at Half Time, yet they fought the game out and kept us goalless in the 2nd Half. We could learn a lot from Drummoyne’s attitude, and when our players were asked by the coach: “What would we do in the same position, which would happen, sooner or later”, Leo wisely replied: “Kick 6 Goals”.)

In the 3rd Qtr the Swans kicked 2.1 goals to the Greyhounds 0.0., which meant it was 6.3.39 to 2.2.14.

In the 4th Qtr the Swans kicked 4.1 to Glebe’s 0.0., a final score of 10.4.64 to 2.2.14.

It was a great win to Newtown and a spirited fight by Glebe, especially to half time.
The Swans showed great team play, backing each other up in tight packs, with a fairly high level of skill by many players. We need to try to lift the skill level of all team members, so that we truly become A TEAM. The Swans played a fast game, with playing-on a feature and the skill level, of finding a target quickly, was good. Although we had a problem with tackling technique, particularly in the 1st Half, the Swans made some great tackles and there was better marking-up of Opposition players. We allowed Glebe less space than we did against Drummoyne, but we were still a bit loose in defence and need to tighten up some more.

Captain, Kuiam David-Anu was inspirational, taking some great marks, spoiling & intercepting Glebe attacks, tackling and kicking 2 goals. His speed and reading of the game stood out. Vivek Sainju was very good for the second week running, with 8 kicks, 1 handball, 3 tackles and 2 goals. Orson Heidrich was great & made many tackles and spoils, dashing runs, and had 6 kicks, 3 marks. Luke Taylor had a great game having 7 kicks, 1 mark and kicking 1 goal. Chris Arney in just his 2nd game was again a livewire, particularly on the forward line, kicking 2 goals (again!), had 3 kicks, 1 mark, 1 handball and 1 tackle. Daniel Black took possibly the Mark of the Day, with a courageous pack mark on the chest, sandwiched between 2 Glebe players. He also took a fine mark out near the boundary line, then kicked a centering ball to Vivek at the top of the Goal-Square, who goaled. Adam Lane had some fine touches, took a couple of good marks, made some dashing runs, (a feature of his game), and kicked a great goal on a tight angle. Mitchell Luff in just his first game and without Training, as he was away, had a number of important touches and kicks. Bruno Kelson hade some good kicks, handballs and tackles. Sinead Martin tackled, spoiled and handballed well. First –Gamer, Liam Richardson, got more involved in the Last Qtr. Oscar Read, Rorie Seddon, Patrick McNichol, Sean Turnbull and Jacob Kovacevic were good team contributors. Peter Lawrence-Boyd was injured early, but returned to the fray in the 2nd Half. Well done, Peter. Under 9’s players, Louis Kelson and Michael Doherty, helped out on the interchange bench. (Louis was great for his 2 Quarters & had 8 kicks,1 handball and 1 tackle and Michael had some important touches in the centre.)

So, well done guys, and we now have a break for the Easter School Holidays. Training starts again on Wednesday, April 26th and we play Easts Bulldogs at our home ground, ADO, on Saturday, April 29th. Compulsory Monday Training also starts on the following Monday, May 1st between 5.00-6.30 PM, AS WELL AS WEDNESDAY TRAINING!!!! Remember those Xmas kilos we’ve been sweating- off? Try not to put them back on again, with all those chocolate Easter Eggs! Keep practicing over the holidays. It’s a good opportunity to sharpen your kicking, marking, handballing, tackling and running skills.

Remember it’s still early in the season and while we’ve had two great wins, let’s not get carried away. We need to practice a lot and train hard when training restarts.

Thanks again to Brendan Read, Assistant Coach, Renee Lane, Acting Team Manager, Georgina Black for the jumpers, David McNichol for the water bottles and John Kovacevic for their help.

Under 10’s Coach

UNDER 10’S MATCH REPORT NEWTOWN SWANS Vs DRUMMOYNE POWER
At Drummoyne Oval, 1.4.06

Newtown Swans had 19 players, Drummoyne Power had 22 players. This was a 15 a side game, which meant 4 players on the bench for the Swans, 7 for Drummoyne. The Swans’ Captain was Orson Heidrich, Vice Captain,Jacob Kovacevic.

The 1st Qtr was great by the Swans as they kicked 3 goals to none by the Power. The Swans came out firing and the Power (last year’s premiers in the Under 9’s & 10’s) seemed a bit rusty. First-gamer, Chris Arney, had a great debut, kicking 2 goals and was very sharp. The Swans showed great teamwork, with fast playing-on. They put pressure on Drummoyne, when they had the ball, with tackles, bumping, bustling.

The 2nd Qtr was much like the first, with 2 more goals to the Swans and none to the Power. Orson Heidrich, Vivek Sainju and Leo Kiefel were outstanding.

In the 3rd & 4th Qtrs it was full credit to the Power, who didn’t drop their bundle, but came back at the Swans. They piled on plenty of pressure in the centre & forward lines, but just couldn’t convert that into goals. The Power actually won the 2nd half, 4 points to 2. The Swans Backs and Centres did very well, with plenty of pressure on Drummoyne, tackles, bumps and last line of defence. Orson and Kuiam David-Anu shone-out, running 20 metres to tackle Power players, who were on their own. Sean Turnbull and Rorie Seddon also laid-on great tackles to cause turnovers. It proves that it is not just stars that make a team, but second and third level players as well. And that is what the Swans are striving to do – TO BE A TEAM, backing each other up and playing for each other.

Although it was a great win, however, if the Swans are honest with themselves, we allowed Drummoyne players too much space. Butter-fingers cost the Power dearly when they were in the clear. Against another side with clean hands they just might nail us. It just proves the importance of manning-up and not allowing the opposition too much space, when they have the ball.

Also, if the positions were reversed and the Swans were 5 goals down, can we come back?
It will happen sooner or later, so we have to be prepared to try and come back and fight a game out to the end. We can learn a lot from the Power, who showed plenty of “ticker” to fight out the 2nd half.

Oscar Read had some fine touches, Daniel Black took a couple of fine marks and played-on quickly, as per the coaches’ instructions. Patrick McNichol showed lots of guts, Adam Lane had a few touches, Leo took some fine marks and kicked a goal, Vivek kicked 2 goals and Kuiam also took some fine marks (one screamer) and kicked a goal. The Captain, Orson, played-out all 4 qtrs. It was a great team effort, with some fine individual performances.
One thing that showed up, though, was that our forwards need to take their time, when kicking for goal from a set shot, and go back far enough to kick over the player on the mark.

The Swans were under the coaches’ instruction to play-on wherever possible, with the aim to be more skillful and faster than the other team. With playing-on quickly, you have a split second to a make a decision and find a target with a kick, handball or knock-on. We’ve got to expect some errors and at times it looks as though we are kicking indiscriminately, but we need to be playing, practicing & training to play-on quickly. Speed is the essence. At the same time, we need to make sure we find a target and work on indiscriminate kicking and handballing. We need to get the balance right. We need to encourage intuition, that is, it becomes automatic or second nature to players. They have to know they’re not going to get bawled-out for trying things. We don’t want robots, or players who need coaches to make decisions for them. The players must make the decisions and in quick time.

Thanks to Brendan Read, Assistant Coach, Renee Lane, Team Manager (filling in for husband John, who is away), Russell Kiefel, Georgina Black for the jumpers , David McNichol for the water bottles, and John Kovacevic for their help.

ps- From Brendan - A reversal of the 2005 GrandFinal in the first match of the season!! I particularly enjoyed the the fact that we have a lot of players who are using the ball. It was a great game for the spectators as good skills were on display.
Well done to you all.

Under 10's Match Report– 2 Trial Games at Bus Stop Oval (S.C.G.)
18.03.06

This was the first hit-out for the Swans in 2006 and involved 2 short 15minute games. We welcomed 3 new players – Peter, Patrick and Paris who were great in their first game.

1st Game: Newtown Swans vs Maroubra Saints

The Swans had 13 players, Maroubra 15 players, which meant a 13 a side game, with 2 on the interchange bench for Maroubra. The Saints got off to a cracking start, kicking 3 goals in the first 5 minutes. The Swans were a bit rusty, and with half the side not playing together before, took a little while to gel as a team. The Swans tightened it up in the centre and backlines andthe game evened out, with the only other score in the next 10 minutes a point to the Swans. Adam, Daniel, Max, Louis, Kuiam, Patrick, Paris, all played well and Jacob took a great mark in defence.

2nd Game: Newtown Swans vs Easts Bulldogs

The Swans had 13 players, Easts 10 players, so we lent Easts 1 player and
played 1 on the interchange bench. Well done to newcomer Peter who
volunteered to play for Easts (and played well for them and got a few possessions.) The final result was 2 points to the Swans, 1 point to Easts.
The Swans dominated for most of the game but just couldn’t convert goals.
Easts came back strongly in the last couple of minutes and the Swans defence was under severe pressure but held firm. Louis, Vivek, Bruno, Kuiam,
Patrick, Oscar
, all played with some fine marks and skilful handball.

In both games, the Swans’ teamwork was very good, backing-up each other
in the packs, playing-on wherever possible and accurate handballs. This is something that showed up and we need to continue to work on – great team
play, backing-up, supporting each other, not balling-out our own players, but being positive, helping each other to learn from our mistakes. The 5 senior players, who played in the Under 10’s last year, have a real leadership role to play in this regard to help ensure the younger, more inexperienced players feel welcomed and valued, and so their confidence, (and the whole team’s), rises.

Thanks to Brendan Read, Assistant Coach, John Lane, Team Manager, and Helen and George Petrovic for the water bottles, jumpers and footballs.

Under 10's Runners up 2005

Newtown's Under 10
team fought valiantly all game to go down to Drummoyne in what was a tough game and the club's second only Grand Final appearance.
Well done everyone!

Next year with work and practice we hope to see a few more Newtown teams challenging for top spots.

2005 Grand Final
Under 10's players are legends

The players put everything into trying to win the Grand Final on Saturday at Picken Oval against Drummoyne. In the end the minor Premiers won the day and the trophy. Newtown were definitely the second best team for the year and so it worked out about right. Each and everyone of you should be proud to have made the Grand Final- I know the Club is.
It was good to see all the parents and players gather together at the end of the match for the trophy presentation. The Association could have been more organised having the medals to hand out on the day, however, they will be presented to the players at the Club Prensetation Day on the 18th of September.

On a personal note I want to thank all the players for a fantastic and fun year. You all made me laugh a lot (and shout a lot) however I know you are all playing better football now than the beginning of the year which is the main thing. Most of you head on up to the Under 11's next year and what a side that will be. Some of you stay in the under 10's and will be senior players that the newer members of the team will look to for guidance. See you all at the Presentation day.
Thanks for a great year- no more doing up shoe laces woohooh...

DESERVED WIN OVER SAINTS IN PRELIMINARY FINAL

Our game plan was to go out there in the first quarter and hit the opposition so hard they never would get back at us and that’s exactly what we did.

Some clean center clearances by Calvin and Orson and backed up by Jacob C meant that the ball was in the firm hands of Hugo who potted a great opening goal. We followed this up with a few attempts by Harry Murphy and another couple of goals gave us a convincing head start.

Second quarter saw the Saints come back at us to within 7 points. We got the ball into our attacking quarter but didn’t manage to convert any goals. Our goalkickers got sucked too deep into the play and our forward line left bare. Rhys P tried hard down in the forward line and although got plenty of action didn’t reach his goal kicking average. Meanwhile the defense boys were doing a great job showing a lot of dogged determination at the teeth of the Saints goals

Third quarter was where Leo snapped a great goal to give us a buffer and the ability to ride home in on the last quarter. James had a good game around the center and Thomas getting and getting his fair share of ball time. It was such a relief to hear the final siren before we all burst with excitement.

It was a pleasure to see so may of the parents getting really involved and cheering and enjoying the boys moment at the final siren when they (and all of us) went ape.

The Saints were better at kicking and marking generally but again we beat them by going at the ball hard epitomized by Finnian, Lachlan, Thomas and especially Jacob C who had a season best game.

Our positional play today was just OK. Our centerline needs to keep on top of their role for next week when we play a team who hold their zones especially well. Remember we need to man up when we are in defense, even if that is in our forward zone. Forwards need to provide themselves as targets and backs need to stick to their man

I am very pleased that we got to this point. We made second on the ladder at the end of the home and away round and its poetic that 1 plays 2 in the grand final. We have consistently played our best football against Drummoyne although we haven’t beaten them yet but each time we have inched a little closer. With a mammoth effort by everyone next week maybe this will be the first time.

Awards today as determined by Simon went to :

Mark of the day – Harry Murphy
Goal of the day – Leo
Best on Ground – Jacob C
Most Fearless player – Finnian
Play as you train- Lachlan
Play of the day –Kuiam

WASH OUT FOR THE SWANS

On a wet and woolly day the opposition showed their superior skills and accountable team play makes them the deserved team at the top of the ladder. We did well at our own level with some great individual performances but certainly not enough to topple a well-oiled machine such as Drummoyne.

Paul, Fergus, Brendan and myself spent a lot of time during the week organising our team list but our system fell apart with Calvin’s late scratching. Thomas, Orson and Kuiam were promoted into ruck and generally did a fine job.

We knew we wouldn’t win this game with clean run-on footy given the conditions so we tried to “bulldoze’ the ball towards our end. However a few quick kicks and marks by the talented D players soon had them a few goals up in each quarter. Some boys needed to push themselves just that little bit harder to keep us in the balance. At the end of the game I pulled out Thomas, Jacob C and Orson as examples of boys who really put in 110%. Others did their best, notably, Sam, Finnian, Harry and Oscar Read.

Good passages of play included Leo’s tough mark, Jaspers work in the forward line, Liam on the wing, a clean run with the ball by Wilson. On fine passage in the third tem ended with a clever goal by Sam but we still need more of them.

We noticed that our boys all got sucked into the play where Drummoyne held their zone. There was always a wall of 5 players unmanned through the centerline who never let us get it out of their backline into our forwards.

But we mustn’t be too hard on ourselves. Generally I think it was one of our better games. We just can’t get enough goals in any one game and our kicking is letting us down. Luckily school holidays are upon us which are a grand opportunity for all boys to get outside and do some practice in the park.

NARROW WIN FOR SWANS ON PRESIDENTS DAY
Under 10's Match Report 18.06.05

Under near perfect conditions at ADO the gallant U/10 Swans narrowly scraped through with a one-point victory over Glebe. The last quarter was an absolute cliff hanger with the lead swapping backwards and forwards like a pendulum.

Our skills don’t seem to be as refined as many of the other teams but our sheer courage and doggedness is winning us over. In this game we didn’t play with as much ‘fire in our belly’ as was needed in the first 3 quarters but the last quarter was a real credit to everyone.

This week we implemented our red team/yellow team strategy to deal with “the bench”. We are splitting the group up into 2 equal forces at training to streamline managing such a large group. This means that most kids only got 2 quarters of play. Next week we face a real challenge in Drummoyne and we may have to put forward a different game plan to try to win this game.

What was particularly heartening in today’s game was seeing some of the newer kids coming through. Coen took a mark under pressure, Jerome played his best ever and Thomas was so keen he went on to play with the 12’s afterwards. Milan was Captain for the day with Liam as Vice Captain.

We all know from the handouts at the end of the game where the accolades went. Sam for getting 2 goals in a game typified by very few goals, Calvin all over the ground, Kuiam playing just as well in the forward line as he does in the backline, Orson following through with his “mongrel dog*’ type of play (*Michael Rothwell), Oscar Read taking 3 great marks in the last quarter and Finnian barreling around like there is no tomorrow.

But it’s not just about a few ‘specy’ players. We saw good solid defence and forwards holding their positions. If we don’t have that sort of discipline we simply will never get the wins.

So next week…. We will try to have a training run Wednesday highlighting the basics. Getting to the ball first, man in front and talking on the field to your teammates and maybe with just a bit of good luck that will get us through!

WELL DONE TO ALL PLAYERS...

Under 10's Match Report 04.06.05

Great game guys! AND AN EVEN BETTER LAST QUARTER!!!!

We were lucky with Maroubra who agreed to play a full field with proper goals and more space to run 18 a side. I think this game suits us more than we can only play 15 a side, being the default case. It depends on both coaches making an agreement to do this. It will not always be the case.

Today we had 27 players for the 18 places on the field, which is a luxury although it makes a very difficult job for Paul managing the bench. Many thanks to Paul for his hard work there, and managing the jumpers and washing them too. Several parents addressed us regarding their boy’s limited time on the field and we appreciate the advice. We rectified the oversight (and it was in both cases an honest mistake). Parents please tell us if you see a problem with game-time because we ask the kids not to hassle us on this issue during the game. No one wants to be on the bench but it simply a matter of mathematics.

In the tradition of rewarding high performance at training we awarded Rhys with the Captain’s job. He won the toss an elected to go away from the sun when it is at its lowest. Good move! Max Whybro backed up as Vice Captain

We really dominated the first quarter with 7 scoring shots although no goals. What does that say? Maroubra scored 2 goals straight. I think we lost the second quarter overall, the third was a bit of a non-event and then we stormed home with a tremendous final rally.

This is really a good indication of our potential. Maroubra looked generally bigger overall, a little more polished with their basic skills but we won it on basic tough footy. We ran harder for the ball, tried to pull the ball out of packs more and threw ourselves on the ball first and often were rewarded by the Umpire for our efforts.

Finnian and Hugo did great work in the backline. Wilson showed some tremendous ‘second effort’ work in front of goals and snuck one through for it. Calvin was all over the field rucking. Sam provided many opportunities in space as a target and our runners, Lachlan and Jasper were in fine form.

With the greater sized field it gives guys who hold their position more opportunity to get to the ball as it comes by. Bran, Todd, Jerome all benefited by being in position and then capitalized.

A special mention to our ‘tough ball getters’ Orson and James who did a lot of hard work around the center. Also I noted how some of the boys had developed a slippery, ‘get out of trouble’ spin and feint that Brendan had introduced at training on Wednesday. We didn’t get caught as often nor run directly into the opposition’s arms.

This week we will be having training both Tuesday evening at 5.00, with several of the Sydney Swans coming down to help, and also our regular gig on Wednesday. A lot of the kids are asking me for training 2 times a week as Drummoyne do. This week is one chance for that, and lets keep in mind our ultimate goal here, to get to the top of the premiership ladder, which will require that extra effort

Trevor

Well done all of you- I have missed the last two matches do to work commitments but I am very proud of your 5 wins from 7 games- That is awesome. Remember to check the ladder at the very bottom of this page

Under 10's Match Report 14.05.05 is on it's way...however,
despite losing to Easts at Alan Davidson Oval we remain in second place by two points. Let's use that advantage to make create a bigger lead with a win against Glebe on the 28th of May.
Please note that both Coaches- Trevor Hall and Brendan Read will be away for this match-(in Melbourne cheering the Swans against the Saints at the 'Dome')
Paul and Michael will be there and will be helped by the under 12's coach Mark.

Round Four- "Newtown Swans under 10's win again"

Happy players celebrate with Paul Roos and coach Trevor Hall.....and happy parents.

Match Report 07-05-05

At the end of the game Paul Roos, the Umpire, said " Your young Swans are a fine team and it will be a good omen for the Sydney Swans tonight at Telstra Stadium against Essendon".

We played a particularly fine game. We started strong, held our lead, faltered a little in the 3rd quarter but after a little rev-up at 3/4 time everyone realised that this game wasn’t over yet and put the pressure back on. A lot of the kids who had been keeping score themselves thought the game was ours. Paul Murphy reminded the kids that we have thought the game was won before and gone on to lose through complacency.. The final quarter was where we showed some of the skills that have been learnt at recent training.

The opposition commented on our leading and indicating skills, which we had worked on in the last training.

This coming week we will be playing he other Easts team. It hasn’t been many times in Newtown Swan’s history where we have beaten Easts at home or away. So I ask all of you to remember that we need to play all 4 quarters.

This week Bruno was Captain, Finnian as Vice-Captain as they excelled at training. Good strong performances by Calvin in ruck, Sam in the forward line and around the field, Victor working hard around the forward line, Hugo at full back, Leo as goal sneak and with the rest providing good support meant that we followed through. But I must say that I am particularly proud of some of the new guys to the game, Thomas and Jacob C. for showing real gutsy play and with their general skills and game reading ability improving rapidly.

We need to remember that in junior football it is important to get to the ball first and to be in front. Free kicks are given liberally to those kids who put in the effort to get in the front spot. Guys like Lachlan, Jasper and Wilson who are willing to run hard will get rewarded. We will work on trying to instill the instinct to get to the ball first further at training

Next week will be the last week where I will be on the field with the kids. That means that the kids will need to go out and follow their own instincts without instruction. We can make a little impact at the quarter time talks. We need to streamline the breaks and make sure that not everyone is talking at once. We need to get your concentration straight away in those few minutes to be effective. I apologise for my direct speaking today to parents and children (although I believe it was necessary). Incidentally if any of the parents want to talk about coaching (after or before the game) I request that you do come and talk to Brendan or I.

Trevor
ps A message from Brendan. A big thank you to Michael for helping each week and for organising the water bottles. We are now in second place on the ladder by two points. This is a a fantastic position to be in - Let's keep up the good work.

More happy Newtwon Swans parents after the win.

Round Three
The under 10's played a superb last quarter today to win against Maroubra (The Saints) at Alan Davidson Oval.

boots

The umpire checks players boots. The under 10's run on to play Maroubra.

It seemed as all our lucky stars aligned today: A lovely sunny Autumn day, our first home game with James Howard's 100 game celebration and a hard fought win to top it all off.

We were lucky today in the fact that the other coach and I negotiated a 18 man side rather than the customary 15 per side as is usual for U/10's. This took a lot of pressure off our overflowing bench and meant that Paul - Team manager and Brendan-Assistant coach could concentrate on rotating the kids through positions rather than just on and off the bench.

At training on Wednesday we introduced a few new skills including smothering and tackling and it was a pleasure to see many of the kids using these with great success. Special commendation to a few of the newer players including Jacob C, Lachlan and Thomas who put these 'one percenters' into play today.

Finnian was Captain today with Jasper as Vice Captain after a solid performances at training. Both guys played a tremendous game and lived up to their positions.

Each week we are recording the Best and Fairest results in a similar way as they do the Brownlow Medal. We have 3 judges each week: The Coach, The Team Manager and one parent. These are kept in envelopes and will all be opened at the end of the year and special awards presented. Any parents who wish to volunteer for this role should see me or Paul or Brendan. We encourage everyone to get more involved in duties such as this. Incidentally at training I am always looking for Assistance from parents. You don't need to be a football star, its about directing kids - something your all already experienced in.

Regarding Best and Fairest and the comments made here are often different. I make a policy of using this report for encouragement rather than recording best performances. however it must be said that Wilson put in a fine performance today , great to see Oscar Read take more strong marks under pressure, Lachlan kick a long and true goal and Sam tearing up the ground and being everywhere.

I'm very pleased to say that after our 'Rev-Up' at 3/4 time with emphasis on 'getting the ball first' resulted in most of the players trying harder. The reward came through more free kicks, marks and eventually a few goals in the last quarter that got us over the line. it was the effort from all players in the final quarter that won us the match. You should all be very proud.

Congratulations to you all.

Regards,
Trevor Hall
