Wrap up of the U8s whites Round Robin Day. 230808
U8's 'Whites' Commanding Performance
In
blustery cold conditions Newtown's under 8's 'Whites' team put in a big
effort in the season closer "Round Robin" of 5 matches at Drummoyne
Oval.
Newtown more than held their own against Wests, Glebe, Maroubra and
Easts Red only coming up a little short against Easts Blue. This was
despite the wind being against them in 3 of the five matches.

Every
player has stepped up this year. Keep practising over the summer
because you are a wonderful team and each players skill has improved.
Next year should see Newtown enjoy quite a few successes if today's
commanding performances are any indication of things to come. Here are some pics by Rod Monk of the action against Wests.

Thanks Everyone for a great year. Eddie Greenaway.

Heffron Park 9/8/08
Newtown
Swans U8's have made a sensational display of teamwork to wrap up this
years home and away season. Every parent and friend should be proud.
the players have represented the club in the true spirit of fair play
and practice.

Skills are really starting to show and all players are looking for each
other on the field. Allegra was "man" of the match and Caillin looked
when he ran hard to collect the ball and booted it long to tam-mate.
Ziad and Wesley are getting the hard balls from the centre, David is
taking great marks and rucking well.

Tom
works tirelessly and Kristo was one of the best on ground, even if he
unselfishly played to even up for Maroubra! Hugo, Octavia and Roisin
did some great work and got the ball up forward.

This
wonderful team of great friends can look forward to some days of
exciting Finals "Round Robins" before hanging up the boots until next
year.

|
In a display of great
teamwork today each of the U8 “White Swans”
played really well. They
often won the hard to get ball from the eager hands of a Drummoyne Power
player. In the backs David, Octavia and Wesley(who also kicked a beaut goal when a forward) were always chasing
the ball and making it hard for the Drummoyne players to win it.
The centre’s Hugo and Roisin worked to win the ball from
the Umpires throw. Caillin roved tirelessly and kicked or hand-balled truly to
a team-mate in the forwards.
Allegra, Kristo and Tom
(today’s captain) led and called for a pass and when they won a free or the
ball booted it towards or through the
sticks (nick-name for goal posts). Everyone’s kicking and passing to a team-mate is improving and the shots on
goal are starting to go between the two big sticks!
It was great to see this
happy team together for their season
Photograph when the game
was over. Many of the players came back
later in day or stayed to enjoy face-painting, kicking and hand-balling
contests and tocheer older friend’s playing for the club. The under thirteen
especially want to say thanks for cheering them on to the ground at 2 o’clock.
Thanks and
congratulations Drummoyne for a great game today and Go Newtown Swans - onwards
to Victory!

MATCH REPORT 28 JUNE 2008 U6 vs U7
Many
had reported that the young Newtown U 6’s would be over whelmed by
their older and more experienced rivals on Saturday. Either they hadn’t
heard the reports or they were determined not to listen.
Dominating
from the first bounce the U 6’s showed how flair and team work can
overcome the toughest opponents. Henry. Otis and Luke rotated the
rucking duties in the center and all three had a stellar third. Morley,
Dylan and Asher all defended strongly while Annelise, Lorcan, Will and
Jamie performed strongly in the forward line. They certainly matched it
with the U 7’s and by the end of the first third had started to pull
away.
The second third was full of highlights. One highlight
being Otis playing strongly at center half forward and handballing to
Henry on the forward line, Henry then kicked a spectacular goal off his
left boot while being closely tagged by his opponent.
The trio
of Henry, Otis and Luke was fantastic to watch and again highlighted
their team spirit. Luke also showed his potential with a strong run to
the goals and Morley showed off his foot speed with quick runs through
the center and easy handballs or kicks in to the forward line. Annelise
paired up with Morley late in the second third to display the power of
the U 6 team when they take the ball up the corridor. Will and James
also remained focus in the centers enjoying the rucking
responsibilities. While most of the action was down the other end, the
defense of Will and James was outstanding and they remained focused
through out.
Lorcan once again showed his development and improvement all over the field and is becoming the U 6’s key defender. The
final third was also dominated by the U 6’s. Jamie had a long run
through the center and kicked the ball to Luke despite being tripped.
Otis remained strong with his move to the backline and kicked many
clearing defensive kicks. Henry continued to run all over the field and
picked up any loose players. Will also played hard and put his body on
the line to stop a sure U 7 goal. Luke also showed how tough the U 6’s
team is when he was hit by the goal post. While obviously hurt he took
a few minutes to recover and then was back with the team. Asher, Dylan
and Morley continued the U 6 onslaught throughout the final third and
when the final hooter sounded all players could be proud of what they
achieved.
Saturday’s game was also a first for Yvette (Morley’s
Mum) who happily took on the runner role when players called “I’m
Thirsty”!!

21st June 2008
Newtown
under 8's are a really good team having a great time and with the
careful guidance of coach Eddie Greenaway their skills are improving by
the day. Good on you all and I can tell you are practicing and enjoying
yourselves and each other on the footy field.
On this
beautful, sunny winters day Allegra was named player of the day and her
beautiful mark in the goal square showed that she is in position and
looking for the footy to be passed to her - see the photo. Wesley is
still couragously diving for and marking the "daisy cutter ball", David
is using his height to take some wonderful grabs and Ziad runs and
runs, taking the ball from the contest and kicking forward to a team
mate. Linus is working hard and the whole team is always busy and ready
to help each other. Good on you team!
Cheers, Rod Monk

Under 6’s Match Report - Saturday 31 May Newtown Swans U6’s vs Easts at Trumper Park
On
probably the coldest morning this year the Newtown under 6’s swans once
again proved their fitness and flair at Trumper Park. The Swans stayed
composed and calm despite the fan fair and hype surrounding their
opponents, the Eastern bulldogs, and ran onto the field composed. This
composure was made more remarkable given that the second under 6 Swans
team was made up of new recruits and draft picks. Coincidently, most of
the new faces came from their opposing team. However, the Newtown
players were unfazed with the leadership group of Jorja, Will, Henry
and Otis, providing huge encouragement to their new team mates.
The
first third showed off the center combination of Henry and Otis and was
beautiful to watch. A strong rucking performance by both players lead
to easy clearances for the Swans and resulted in an early goal for
Will. Will was strong and committed to the goal posts and this
commitment was supported by Jorja down the other end with several tough
ball gets paying off. The running game the Swans prefer was on show
with a strong running out of defense by Jorja.
The Second third
highlighted that Jorja is a potential rising star and can play well in
any part of the field. Keen to take on the rucking responsibilities she
didn’t disappoint ensuring that Newtown continued to dominate the
clearances out of the center.
Once again the combination of
Henry and Otis in the forward line proved a good move with a string of
goals by both players. Will again showed his commitment to the goal
posts and stopped a number of sure Bulldogs goals.
The final
third was all Newtown as they continued their dominance in the center.
Will was keen to show he could play away from the goals and provided
the rucking performance of the match. Henry and Otis continued to work
together calling and challenging each other to defend strongly until
the final hooter. The also showed their true sportsmanship by giving
some kicking instructions to the opposition forwards keen to pass on
their love of the game. This was well received by the bull dogs
forwards and by the end of the game all players were laughing and
enjoying the spectacle. Once again Jorja was in her element in the
forward line working well with her fellow team mates to score a number
of goals from difficult angles.
Round 8 showed that the Newtown
Swans have a great love of the game and proved that the team motto of
“have fun” is well and truly ingrained in these four formidable
players.

Under 5’s Match Report - Saturday 31 May Newtown Swans U6’s vs Easts at Trumper Park
Victor
Trumper had style. A swing of the wrists and an elegant follow-through
saw the cricket ball reach or clear the boundary, probably often where
the excellent coffee-cart now parks, and certainly countless times at
the pavilion, where the sausage and bacon barbie now sizzles (yum oh!).
All these years later, the eyes of the ghost of Victor Trumper
would have watered at the graceful skills displayed by the Newtown
Swans U5s. Ollie and Joe again showed sublime skills, their combination
around the park proving imperious. Harry and Alana had Trumper Park
agog, sheer power disguised as subtle shimmies and quicksilver
transfers. Angus, Drew, and Luke then took the swelling crowd to dizzy
heights with a series of six-pointers so exquisite that Vic's ghost was
now balling uncontrollably.
Easts played well too, but it must be tough having to impress Victor Trumper every second week.

Under 6’s Match Report - Saturday 31 May Newtown Swans U6’s vs Easts at Trumper Park
The
team comprised of 5 Newtown players (Annelise, Dylan, Lorcan, Morley
and Parker) and a couple of Easts players to make up numbers.
The
1st quarter highlighted Parker who got a great boot to the ball 5m out
from goal which was then touched by some great defensive work by Easts.
Lorcan then converted the next opportunity by aiming fabulous kick
straight through the middle of the goals.
In the 2nd quarter,
Annelise showed off her ball touchdown skills in the centres whilst
making several metres and Morley did a great kick for goal from the
centre which was disallowed but made up for it shortly afterwards. That
was followed by Lorcan who made some great defence getting his arms up
on the mark.
In the final, exciting 3rd quarter, Morley managed
a rocketing high kick straight at goals that only just missed due to
unlucky bounce at the last moment. However things came good seconds
later when he was able to convert another opportunity. Parker placed a
super kick straight into the pack from the back line with Annelise,
Parker and Lorcan making some great hand passing work throughout the
game.
A great, fast paced game played well by all.

Newtown Swans U6 v Newtown Swans Round 6 – Heffron Oval 18 May 2008
1st Qtr
As
the Cheers rose from the sideline, the first ball up, went up. Henry
picks the ball up and kicks to Otis. Otis lines up and kicks a goal,
one of many. The Centres continued to explode out of the blocks with
Henry and Jorja imposing their influence and the goals keep coming from
Otis, Lorcan and Parker. The backs weren’t getting much action, even
with the ball ups getting closer and closer to the backs. Suddenly
Morley stopped a certain goal and quickly ran around the player to hand
pass onto Henry, who inturn kicked the ball up, which Lorcan marked and
kicks a goal.
2nd Qtr
Once again the Centres took control
thru Morley and Annelise, who keep hand passing and kicking the ball up
to the forwards. Henry combined with Dylan and Jorja and kept kicking
goal after goal. At this stage the ball ups where getting even closer
to the backs. Yet with Otis, Parker and Lorcan in the back, not much
was getting thru in this quarter. The second quarter finished the same
as the first, another goal, Henry collected the ball from the centres
and hand passes onto Dylan. Dylan pulls his socks up (as all
professionals do) and kicks a goal with seconds to go.
Final Qtr
The
new combined Centres for the final quarter, Parker, Otis and Lorcan
continue with the pattern of the game, feeding the ball up to the
forwards. Morley and Jorja combine well and keep kicking goal after
goal. Once again, not much was happening with the backs, as Henry,
Jorja and Dylan combined well. On the odd occasion a ball came out of
the backs and Otis rose to take the MARK of the day, he then hand
passes to Morley who kicks a goal. With a great game having been played
by all on field the end of the game was in sight when just at the
siren, Morley kicks another goal.
Awards even harder this
week, as all had a great game. Dylan got Player of the Day, Henry and
Jorja got Team Player and Will received Try Your Best award. Parker
showed enthusiasm and great running skills to pick up the coaches Award
for the week.

Newtown Swans U5 v Newtown Swans Round 6 – Heffron Oval 17 May 2008
Last
Saturday saw us at Maroubra Saints' Heffron Park on another pristine
autumn morning and, by gee, didn't this U5's clash do the morning
justice. Sublime skills were on display from both sides right from the
opening hooter, and Joe and Ollie soon had taken a vice-like grip on
proceedings at the back. The two of them worked well off each other all
morning, and this early strength at the back seemed to inspire the
rest. Harry and Alana started to get some quality ball to the forwards,
and Luke, Angus, and Drew knew just what to do with it---drill it
towards the big sticks.
2nd and 3rd quarters saw these
partnerships around the park grow, and with a small yet vocal crowd
baying them on, these lads and lasses from Newtown done us proud. Well
done new recruit Angus, as he toughed it out after getting the ball in
face treatment late in the game. Football, as per, was the winner on
the day.

Match report U5 & U6 for 10 May 2008
It
is hard to believe that only four short weeks ago many of the Newtown
Swans under 6’s team played their first game of footy. This week’s
performance against the Eastern Bulldogs proved that many of these
players are future rising stars. The
first third once again highlighted the strong defensive commitment of
the Swans with Morley getting many early touches and running hard out
of defense. Lorcan’s big grab in the center, over the taller Bulldogs
player, quickly resulted in a goal for the Swans. At one stage early in
the first third it looked like the bull dogs could run away with it but
Otis put out his hand right on the line, preventing a sure goal. Henry
showed his commitment to turn defense into offence as he combined with
Lorcan in the midfield. This paring resulted in many assists into the
forward line.

Despite
the bulldogs flooding the Swans forward line, team work won in the end.
The swans notched up twice as many handballs as the bulldogs and thus
proved that many hands make light work. This fact was highlighted when
Dylan handballed to Asher inside the forward third allowing Asher an
excellent scoring opportunity. Asher didn’t disappoint, putting the
ball right through the sticks.
 Parker
once again proved he has safe hands taking a strong mark in the center.
He also finished strongly, attacking the football and preventing two
Bulldogs goals. Luke T also showed his commitment to the team,
unselfishly handballing and kicking out of defense, thus setting up the
direct running play the swans pride themselves on.
Players Kai,
Jamie, Annelise and Jorja all proved what great sports they are. Kai
and Jorja played with the team after being drafted from the under
sevens. Their speed and finesse, particular in the centers, proved that
their drafting was a good win for the under 6’s. Jorja, Annelise and
Jamie all proved that the game was the winner with their unquestioning
commitment to both the Swans and Bulldogs. When coming back to the
Swans after their stint with the Bulldogs they showed a focus and
commitment that left the crowd speechless and proud of the red and
white.
This Newtown Swans outfit is definitely improving and
only continues to impress. It is certainly one team that this
commentator can’t wait to watch fly next week.

Match Report Newtown Under 5s Vs Easts
10 May 2008 at ADO The signs were good for the Swans, as a full complement of 4 and 5 year olds burst through the club banner. With
enthusiasm to burn, the U5’s took to the field in what was to be a very
drilled performance, with spirited runs from the backs, and plenty of
hand passing. The first third saw the Swans match up well with their
opposite numbers, giving a good show across the park. With the Swans
players holding their positions well, and thanks to some excellent
defence, the U5s were having a very good game.
  In
the second third, the Swans again showed great teamwork during several
rebound attacks through the Easts defense. Great work from Joe saw the
forwards received hand passes close to goal, and Drew booted a couple
of goals on debut. Alana showed great running and hand passing skills
in a very un-selfish Swans side. The final third saw more great
teamwork, as the Swans began pulling ahead. The ball was moving quickly
from player to player and high percentage hand passes had the Swans
leading the possession count. A terrific game for the Swans, teamwork getting them across the line, as much as all the fantastic individual performances. Awards went to: Try Your Best – Joe Team Play – Oliver Player of the Day – Drew Coaches Award – Alana
As
a “Parent-on-Debut” I must say how proud I was of the entire team and
how delighted I am that my son had such a great time in his first every
team sport event. I may or may not have shed a tear of pride (OK, I
did!) Report by Andrew Witten (Drew’s dad)

Under8s Newtown Vs Easts at ADO 10th May 2008
Under 8's continue to play some really good footy and are having a lot of fun together. Many of the players are looking for team mates to pass to when they win the ball and the kicking, hand-balling and calling out skills are really coming on. Good on all our under 8's for playing so well today and special thanks to those I saw playing up to support the under 9's.

Newtown Swans v Glebe Greyhounds Round 4 – Allan Davidson Oval
As
the sun rose Alan Davidson Oval looked stunning as the wonderful Sydney
weather continued for the first NJAFC Swans home game of the year.
Today’s team was brought together from the Signets (Under 5’s), Under 6
and 7’s and played together under the banner of the Angels
commemorating, in the lead up to the AFL’s Community Round, the former
NSW Australian Football powerhouse, the Newtown Australian Rules
Football Club.
The Swans Juniors were revelling in the fine
conditions as they ran through their drills and looked ready to take on
local rivals the Glebe Greyhounds. There was a loud cheer from the
assembled crowd of parents and supporters as they made their first run
through the banner to the field.
Despite a mix up by coaching
staff in allocating too many red bibs (and not enough black ones), the
Angels were eager to play, although lining up very much in the minority
against their Glebe opponents. This mix-up in numbers also resulted in
a very congested game in the other juniors match and has led call for
the renewed use of the controversial 1920’s “headcount” rule, as well
as embarrassed coaches who only realized the error in post game video
analysis.
From the ball up, inspired by bravery and team spirit
of the former Blood Stained Angels, the Newtown players chased the
footy, showing good skills and team work, sharing the ball and
supporting each other throughout the day.
The Swans centres
exploded out of the blocks with Thomas and Lorcan imposing their
influence from the opening minutes. Solid defensive work from Luke T,
who entered the game under an injury cloud following a head cut,
suffered during the week, and Harry, kept the Greyhounds at bay during
the first period. The extent of the pressure being applied was
demonstrated when Harry won a free kick remaining on his feet to
collect a possession in a big pack of players, despite many around him
hitting the ground.
Following the first change the Swans were
slow to adjust until Thomas burst away to score a good team goal after
strong lead up work from Jamie and Luke T, both showing the improved
kicking skills being developed at training. Lorcan again showed his
athleticism and speed to pepper the Greyhound’s goal, preferring to
play on take on his opponents and run in on goal rather than take the
set shots offered to him.
It was also during the second period
that running midfielder Ryan showed his strong kicking game, clearing
the Swans half back line and setting up counter attacking options
through the corridor. Kai played well putting his head over the ball
and challenging hard for possession and playing on bravely after a
solid one-on-one contest.
Right from the siren for the final
quarter the Swans showed the benefits of the “Stuck in the Mud” fitness
program, recently imposed on the squad following the holiday break,
finishing with more run in their legs than their Greyhound
counterparts. In an anxious wait the team may again come under AFL
scrutiny after oranges and what were described by Swans sources as
“Jelly Supplements” were consumed by the team at the breaks.
Just
as the game was in the balance Kai and Ryan stepped up and showed their
experience in gaining several decisive possessions before Kai was
forced from the field unwell, having battled valiantly throughout the
game.
With the Greyhounds keeping Joe and Harry quiet in the
forward line it appeared that the pressure exerted by the Swans
midfield would not be converted to points until Joe scored his
trademark “Adam Goodes-like” break away running goal. Already the
familiar sight of the big four year old streaming towards goal has
impressed a number at the Club.
With a great game having been
played by all on field the end of the game was in sight when just at
the siren, Joe was hit in the face with the ball at point blank range.
In a gesture to silence those that believe that professionalism and
cynicism are ruining the modern game, Greyhounds and Swans rushed from
over the field to make sure that their colleague was alright. Joe
recovered quickly showing great courage to shake hands with the
opposition and join the rest of the squad for singing the Club song.
Overall
it was a pleasure to host the Glebe Greyhounds. Their players and
parents represented their club proudly and showed themselves to be
great sports. Our Swans showed their opposition the respect that was
spoken about by the team in the lead up to the game. This lead to an
enjoyable game for both sides played in great spirit.
Awards
were made to Jamie (Player of the Day), Harry (Team Player) and Luke T
(Try Your Best). Lorcan showed enthusiasm and great running skills to
pick up the coaches Award for the week.
Kai, Ryan and Thomas
demonstrated the values instilled in them by the Under 7’s coaches to
support their younger team mates and contribute to a great game day. A
special award was presented to these boys and our thanks go to them for
their leadership and effort.
Over the past weeks we have seen a
definite rise in the Swans skills, especially in our ability to get our
hands on the footy. Luke T, Harry, Jamie, Lorcan and Joe linked
together well as a team and played the game with great pride, showing
respect for other players and the umpire. During the game the players
looked for their team mates with their kicking and handballs and
continued to develop their understanding of the game.
Well done
Swans – today you have continued in the tradition those who have played
football in the Newtown area over many years in either an Angels or
Swans Guernsey.
A special vote of appreciation must also go to
all the parents and carers that helped to make our first home game a
success. As well as the ongoing support provided by parents and carers
at training and on game day we were able to have the ground set up and
canteen operate smoothly. This again demonstrates the great team
spirit, sense of community and open participation that we are building
in our club. This sets a great example for our kids – thanks.

Newtown Swans Vs Glebe Greyhounds Alan Davidson Oval Under 5s and 6s (and 7s…) Saturday 3rd May 2008
Like
so many great Swans before them, the signets were filled with
excitement as they streamed through the banner of red and white for the
first time this season, some for the first time ever. The day was crisp
and the hallowed turf of Alan Davidson Oval called the young warriors
forth.
 1st Quarter The
game started how it would continue, on what would turn out to be a long
morning for the Newtown Swans. From the first bounce Glebe showed their
skills with some excellent long kicking out of the centre. Fortunately
some strong work by the Newtown backline managed to restrict the
scoring to just one point for the whole quarter. The Swans’ spirit was
most obvious in an amazing display of attacking that started on the
last line of defence. Annelise bravely smothered a Glebe Greyhounds
shot on goal and quickly gathered the ball. She then kicked long to the
days captain, Morley, who marked strongly. The captain then passed the
ball to Parker who capped an amazing sequence of play with an amazing
goal. The Swans were also unlucky with a number of shots stopped on the
line.

2nd Quarter The
second quarter was again mostly one way traffic. With the Glebe
Greyhounds employing a flood even Noah couldn’t have got through, the
Swans had to manufacture their goals through some inventive play. This
was epitomized by Henry who managed to pounce on a loose ball in the
forward line and snap an amazing running goal. Otis provided drive with
some strong running and bouncing through the corridor. Unfortunately,
the rest of the quarter provided few highlights for the Newtown Swans.
 Final Quarter Half
time refreshments took a healthier turn this week with oranges
replacing the jelly snakes as the secret energy source. Would this be
enough to turn the black and white tide around? Alana’s four bounce run
through the centre third provided Newtown with a brief spark. Zoe took
a sensational mark and Morley defended strongly. Sadly this would not
be enough as the Glebe Greyhounds managed to wrestle control of the
game, showing amazing skills right across the ground. Several of the
ball incidents may land some Greyhounds in trouble with the match
review panel. It is a tribute to the sportsmanship of the Swans that
none of them would be drawn in by the hat stealing and constant
niggling of a minority of the Greyhounds.

It
was an honour and a pleasure for the Swans to play such a skilled and
talented side as the Glebe Greyhounds. Hopefully this will inspire us
to train even harder. Next time, we’ll get them.
Awards this
week went to Alana for Team Player, Morley for Try Your Best, Jamie for
Player of the Day, Otis for Player of the Day and Luke C for Coaches’
Award.
Thank you to Lila and Dan (Oliver B) for the match report and Katrina (Parker) for the photos.

Newtown Under 8s Whites Vs Drummoyne - April 12th 2008
A beautiful morning at Five Dock Park ushered in a great contest between the Mighty Newtown Whites and the Drummoyne Power. Cameron was a last minute inclusion from the Reds after Jude's injury problems flared again. Cameron fitted in to the team like he'd been playing there all his life, roaming freely across the centre collecting touches at will and his booming punts et up many opportunities, he was well backed up across the centre by David and Hugo making up an impassable wall. Up front Ziad, Allegra and Tom were presenting well and the prssure told with Ziad slotting home the first major. Allegra also got into the action and the Whites enjoyed a handy lead at the first change.
In the second phase Drummoyne started to gsther more possessions through the middle but Wes, Roisin and Nick kept the pressure on and with Ziad marshalling the backs Drummoyne didn't have a lot to show for their possessions. The highlight of the second term was a great snap by Cameron for 6 points!
In the final term the contest really opened up and exciting end to end action ensued. Wesley at half forward ran hard and was the recipient of some great passes from Ziad and NIck and Roisin provided spark in the goal square. Down back David, Cameron and Hugo fought hard to contain the Power forwards. At the end a great passage of play saw Wesley grab the last six pointer of the day. Well done all and we look forward to our return to home soil after the holiday break.

Under 8s Sat 12th April
Newtowns under 8's are playing some really good footy. The experience of a couple of seasons is starting to show and the players are following the game and keeping there eyes on the footy. Our happy team can expect to have some great times this year and coach Eddie Greenaway is very happy with each players efforts.

A feather spectator is more interested in the grass growing than the game!

Saturday April 12, 2008 Signets Under 5s Newtown Swans versus Drummoyne Power
This
week the Swans travelled to Five Dock to face off against the Power.
The numbers were even- 7 against 7 and the Power looked like fearsome
opposition.
The first quarter caught both teams a little
asleep, although Harry dominated the ruck and Jamie was strong in
defence. Alana proved a strong target up forward but overall the Swans
found themselves in a tight struggle against the Power. There were
several attempts on goal from the Signets.
A shot of glucose in
the form of jelly snakes proved the secret weapon in the second
quarter. The Swans kicked clear of the less disciplined Power outfit.
Lorcan, Luke and Harry proved a formidable forward line, handpassing,
sharing the ball nicely amongst themselves and having play all their
own way. This teamwork allowed Lorcan to kick 2 big goals. Joe and
Jamie provided plenty of ball to the forward line, showing good skills
and teaching the Power a few lessons about teamwork and sharing. Ollie
and Alana starved the Power forward line of opportunities, only
allowing 1 point through for the quarter.
The final quarter
saw a strategic reshuffle by Coach Jon to sure up the centre line. A
further sugar boost also may have been sighted by careful onlookers to
give our signets the advantage on the field. By this stage the sting
seemed to have gone out of the game, until Joe kicked a fantastic
running goal.
To paraphrase Coach Jon from the post match
talk: “We had a great middle quarter with some flagging attention spans
in the last quarter. We were a bit tired but there were a lot of
touches, great goals and teamwork.”
Overall, the Swans took a
little while to warm up in the first quarter, had a great middle
quarter and got slightly distracted in the final quarter. However the
general understanding of the game rules and kicking and passing skills
of the Swans surpassed that of our Power counterparts. In particular,
the comradarie and teamwork attitude of the Swans was noticeably higher
than the Power who sometimes suffered from internal struggles.
Under 5s Awards:
Try Your Best Award: Harry Jones
Team Play Award: Jamie Shaw
Player of the Day: Lorcan Kerr
Signets Coach Award: Joe Dyster

Match Report – Under 7s 5th April Picken Oval On
the last Saturday before the end of daylight saving and after our
longest travel to a game for the whole season, the enthusiasm of our
Under 7 squad again amazed and impressed all the adults on the sideline. As
last week, the squad split into two groups. One team played against our
hosts, the Western Suburbs Magpies and the other team played with and
against some of the Under 6s. The
skills of all players are already showing terrific improvement. The
great work of Coach Jack Finsterer and his assistants Ant Tamba and
Bryce Wilde is obviously being helped by lots of practice at home with
Mum and Dad. Again,
the selection of award winners was very, very difficult. Everyone tried
hard and everyone did their very best to work as a team. Some of the
marks taken by these talented Swans would be applauded in the Under
10s, and everybody is getting better at kicking.
After much discussion, the judges finally awarded the following certificates.
The “Try Your Hardest” awards were presented to Ethan Koit and Eleni Black.
The Team Player certificates went to Jo Finsterer and Aaron Thomas.
Zac Richards and Luca Tamba won the Player of the Game awards.
When
interviewed after the game, Luca Tamba praised his coaches. “At
training we did lots of marks and handballs and BIG kicks. Jack taught
us how to kick the ball straight.”
Jo Finsterer talked about the
importance of regular practice and always trying to do better. Even
though he played very well, Jo Finsterer said “Before next game, I will
be practicing my kicking. ‘specially I will be practicing longer
kicking.”
Two pieces of very good advice were given by Eleni
Black when she was interviewed. Eleni said “I need to bring blankets to
the game because it’s getting cold.” (Match reporter’s note : Eleni is
right. After the holidays, expect some very cold mornings.) She also
talked about her strategy for playing well. “I think it’s a good idea
to go to bed early on Friday night, so you can be wide awake to play.”

Under 5 + Under 6 5th April 2008
The
atmosphere was all set for an exciting game at Picken Oval and the
Under 5 and 6s didn't disappoint. The first third started with a strong
rucking performance by Morley in the center and his team work lead to
two early goals by Henry. The Newtown Swans continued to dominate in
the early part of the game with a tough ball get by Joe deep in the
oppositions forward line. Joe followed up his defensive work with a
strong goal later in the game, further highlighting his versatility.
Luke, in combination with Harry, continued the commitment in defense
with solid work out of defence and through the center.
 Newtown's
run continued with a spectacular mark at half way by Lorcan that
stopped Wests in their tracks. In addition, Annelise worked hard
throughout the game and her commitment paid dividends with a stunning
running goal late in the final third. Other highlights included Jamie's
determined goal through traffic and a gutsy defensive effort by Alana
despite injury.
Post
the hooter both coaches were impressed by the improvement of all
members of the team, in particular their ball handling skills and team
work.

Under 7s Match Report 29th March
After
nearly six months of waiting, a squad of 20 Under 7s descended on
Heffron Park, keen to show off the results of intense practice over the
Summer months. Exactly half our squad has moved up from the Under 6s
and half is brand new to Auskick, but the excitement was universal.
 Having
such large numbers, we split into The Reds, who played against
Maroubra, and The Blacks who played against a combined team of Concord
and some of the Swans Under 6s.
The Maroubra team displayed
fantastic skills and gained many spontaneous rounds of applause for
some spectacular play. The Swans Red team also played with great
enthusiasm and often displayed skills equivalent to their opposition.
Our
new players, in particular, impressed, and indeed, two of the three
awards handed out after the game went to new players. Nicky Kohlrusch
overcame the problem of an ill- fitting jersey to be awarded the Team
Player of the Day certificate. Cormack Kenne got up after a nasty
(accidental) hit in the face and played great footy to win the “Try
Your Best” award. Matt Dyster continued the great form he displayed in
the second half of last season to win the Player of the Day certificate.
Over
on the other field the story was the same. Under 7s Black team had a
number of new players, and again, two awards went to first-time
players. Finn Hall showed great skills to win the Player of the Day and
Deon Coelho never stopped trying and simply had to be given the “Try
Your Best” award for Effort. Orynn Seddon showed what the Swans are all
about by winning the Team Play award.
After the presentations
and singing of the Club Song, Manager, Julie Sicco, congratulated the
Award winners and the whole team and then interviewed three of the
award winners.
Finn Hall put his success down to a healthy
breakfast. He proudly announced “I had some Mine Wheats … I had a whole
bowl”, reminding us all how important it is to eat healthy food to
become good at any sport.
According to Cormack Kenne the kicking
by his Swans team-mates was the best part of a great game. “When we had
the ball we kicked it very good.”
Matt Dyster agreed when he said “The best thing about today was when we worked togther as a team, and we had a very good time.”

Under 8s NEWTOWN WHITES vs MAROUBRA Match Report Round 1, 29 March.
After
a vigorous pre season the Newtown Swans 2008 season opened at Heffron
Park, Maroubra last Saturday to an eager crop of Under 8’s. Newtown
were quick out of the blocks posting the first goal after a clever
centre clearance from Tom found Ziad inside 50 whose snap managed to
evade several Saints defenders and bounce through the big sticks. As is
common in the modern era, the game was being won out of the centres. David
was dominating in the ruck but was well supported by Allegra and
Roisin. Allegra’s solid thump from the breakdown cleared the pack and
found the hard working Nick who kicked forward where Wes pulled down a
beauty then kicked truly. Roisin’s deft tap allowed Wes to use his
silky skills to give the Swans another centre clearance. Under 7
Luca, a last minute inclusion due to the withdrawl of Caillin following
a controversial late night incident at the school disco, showed all and
sunrdy the makings of a future champion. Hard running, superb ball
skills and a sharp pass to Ziad and the Swans had another one on the
board. The Saints just couldn’t get it past the centre and were
frustrated by the close marking of Hugo. Newtown’s defenders were
having a quiet day but not for long. After
the main break Maroubra hit back with their midfielders finally finding
some form and through some good teamwork started moving the ball
forward with more ease. It was a hard slog however, with the Swans
backline holding firm. Play of the Day award winner Ziad’s brilliant
mark on the line saved a goal. Hugo’s beautiful torpedo from centre
half back brought back fond memories of the days before efficiency
statistics ruled a coach’s strategy. It wasn’t all one way traffic
however, with David proving a formidable target down front and Player
of the Day Tom continually finding targets inside 50. The
mood of the fans filing out of Heffron was jubilant after a sublime
team performance. Coach Greenaway was sporting a very wide smile after
the game. And why wouldn’t he? On this effort the future looks bright
for these rising stars of the AFL. By Steve Pauner

Auskick Coaches, Assistant Coaches, Managers, Helpers and Parents
Welcome to Auskick 2008.
So far we have had a good response in our registrations for the year following on from the "Meet the Swans" event held last Tuesday and this year promises to be another great year for Newtown Auskick. Please note however we are still accepting registrations, so please continue with your recruitment activities and bring down your friends and relatives if they would like to play!
The purpose of this email is to give you an update on events happening and to assist in providing a successful start to the season.
Key dates
Auskick Training commences Wednesday 12th March 2008 at 4.30pm at Allan Davidson Oval (ADO) for all U5 - U9
Auskick Coaches Forum will be held on Thursday 13th March 2008 at 6.45pm at the SCG Theatrette (Coaches: see attached agenda)

Further registrations to occur at training nights in the lead up to the season - will advise of arrangements once finalised

Swans half time Auskick - Saturday night 14th June vs St Kilda and Sunday afternoon 4th May vs. the Bulldogs
Coaching / Helping
At this stage we have coaches for all Auskick teams however we still have plenty of need for assistant coaches, parent/carer helpers and team managers in some age groups. The more people we have available for helping out with training and game day practice, the more opportunity we have for our kids to develop skills and confidence, so please if you'd like to get involved let me know or approach the coach/manager of your child's team.
The AFL will conduct a "Level 0" Coaching session for assistant's and parent/carer helpers (this includes introduction to the game, teaching the skills of handballing, marking, kicking and generally fun games to help develop children's skills) It would be good if we could get as many new parents as possible to this night/nights so please let your coaches/managers know if you are interested and we will advise you when this is going to be held.
Goals for 2008 and a vote of Thanks
Our goals for the year are to ensure high participation levels, an ongoing improvement in player and coaching skills and to have fun. It is our aim to build a great club culture and get as many people involved as we can to make it as easy as possible to get our kids on the field, so please do not hesitate to contact me if you require help with anything or have any suggestions as to how we can improve Auskick and make it more enjoyable for our Auskick families. I think that it is also important to thank all the coaches and helpers from the Auskick family who have kept the club and team running over the past few years - let's keep building the Auskick tradition at Newtown.
This is my first year as Auskick Coordinator and I take over from some great work done by Eddie Greenaway. I would like to thank Eddie for his personal effort and passion in building a strong club culture and Auskick participation at Newtown. I only hope that I can continue to achieve the benchmark set by Eddie in this role over the years.
Other information
I have attached a copy of the minutes from the Sydney City Auskick Coordinators meeting held a few weeks back with much of the information outlined above. There were a few matters that were still to be finalised at the Regional Meeting (e.g. U9 tackle rule and playing times). I expect that final details in relation to this matter will be available and will be communicated (in the new Auskick Manual for 2008) at training over the coming weeks.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require further information - I have the club phone 0428 425 905 (please text or leave a message if I am not available) or you can contact me through email.
Regards, Jon Dyster Newtown Swans Auskick Coordinator

"The 2007 Club Secretary has been sourced from the Auskick parents" Geoff Barnett has kindly put up his hand to be the Club Secretary. Bronwyn Shearer has been offered a role as assistant to the marketing/sponsorship team. Thank you to both of them. Please note that a few more people are welcome to assist the Committee as specialist assistants. Please contact Brendan on readmail@brp.au.com

Under 7s match Report 12 May 2007
The High rise backdrop of Sydney sparkled in the distant east as the sun rose over Fivedock Oval on another beautiful Sydney Saturday morning.
Newtown Coach Eddie and his support team organised a fabulous game of footy for all the girls and boys. There were some very good marks, hnad-balls and kicks to team-mates and the marking a player and staying in position were excellent. Curtis and Ziad had great games and everyone enjoyed themselves very much. Scent from the Drummoyne BBQ wafted over the ground and after the game the children congratulated each other, thanked the Umpires and sang the Club Song. With their parents they then headed over to buy some breakfast and play with their friends.

It’s a big moment in a young sportsperson’s life to perform in front of spectators other than family. When the Newtown Swans were announced on the ground PA 30 little red and white chests swelled with pride.
The Newtown boys and girls played two exhibition games against teams from the Baulkham Hills Falcons and the “crowd on the hill” and in the stands were generous in their applause as the skills of our young players were enthusiastically and impressively displayed. Perhaps the major highlight was the opportunity to cheer the Uni side on to the field, and the Uni players seemed to appreciate the encouraging hand slaps from their newest fans.
Congratulations and thanks must go to SUANF Club President Jason McLellan and his Committee for the efforts to which they went to make the day one to remember for our players and families. Special kid snacks were laid out and the Club even organised a jumping castle which entertained many after their game. All that was required for a perfect day was for the Sydney Uni Premer Division Seniors to have a win. Unfortunately, it was not to be as they lost an agonisingly close and extremely exciting game by just one goal. (If you’re looking for good “grass-roots” senior football to watch on Saturday afternoons, you could do worse than get along to support the Uni side every now and again. The steak sandwiches are highly recommended !)
Opportunities like this do much to assist development of self-esteem and enthusiasm in young players. Consequently, the Family Day is now to be an annual event and is a wonderful addition to our calendar. All involved are to be congratulated.

Newtown Under 7’s had a wonderful day as the shadows of late afternoon spread across a sunny and green oval. All the boys and girls from both Glebe and Newtown delighted their parents, playing fairly and with great friendship. Good on you kids!

Welcome Back - Newtown Footy Club - Auskick 2007

The Newtown Swans Auskick program is the lifeblood of the footy club and is great safe fun for kids and a ball for parents and grandparents alike.
On Saturday 31 March the Sherrin was thrown up for the first time in 2007 at Picken Oval in Croydon Park and a great day was had by all as Newtown players chased the footy arounnd with the Wests Magpies and the Concord Cats. It was great to welcome a big bunch of enthusiastic new players, coaches, team managers and other parent helpers as they joined our family of seasoned Auskick veteran players, Coaches and Managers.
The Auskick Juniors (Under 5s and 6s) this year are coached by Martin Fane and Angela Ryan - a new parent -has put her hand up as Team Manager.
The Auskick Colts (Under 7s) are coached by Eddie Greenaway with another new parent Milvia Harder as the Team Manager.
The Auskick Intermediates (Under 8s) are Coached by Michael Neill-Smith who has coached the bulk of this group for the past 3 years and with his large group of 30+ players Michael relies upon the support of a whole squadron of helpers!
The Auskick Seniors (Under 9s) are Coached by Bill Nettheim with Henry Mulholland as Team Manager - this dynamic duo continues on from their great work with the U/8s last year.
I encourage all parents to put their hands up and get involved, Helen Morre will be circulating canteen/bbq rosters soon for our home games and we are always looking for helpers with training - participation and fun is the name of the game with Newtown Auskick.
I'd also like to see each group find a parent(or coach if you have time) to write up a little match report for each round and send them in to me by the Wednesday after each match, I'll put them together and forward to Brendan Read the webmaster for uploading on the website. Photos are also fantastic!!!!
In closing a few words to thank Alan Massie our Auskick coordinator for the past few years who has moved on - Alan made a fantastic contribution to the life of the club and put a great deal of effort into making the program run and in representing Newtown Auskick across the Sydney City region. Cheer Cheer Alan.
And also a word of encouragement for our graduating class of Auskickers - the Under 10s of 2007 under the guidance of Coach Michael Doherty. Well done! you're now off into the world of tackling and competition - but remember it's not for sheep stations - learn, play hard and enjoy your footy and do the Red & White proud!!!
Have a great Easter and holiday break and we'll see you all at Alan Davidson Oval on Saturday 21 April - we are hosting Maroubra and Concord!

Under 7's Match Report - Jubilee Oval, Glebe Sat 5th May, 2006
Newtown Swannies Fly at Glebe
Newtown Under 7’s had a wonderful day as the shadows of late afternoon spread across a sunny and green oval. All players put in a huge effort and the results of good coaching is beginning to show as players start hand passing and kicking to team mates up the ground. Ziad, Fin, Will, Timothy, Hugo, ran hard. Wesley, Linus and Callian held there positions. Allegra took the “specky” of the game then slotted through a goal from a 10 metre punt!

AUSTRALIA DAY 2007
The Newtown Swans were invited down to the annual Australia Day celebrations at Enmore Park this year by Marrickville Council. A small over was constructed, jumpers were scrounged from the bottom of the cupboard and water bottles filled.
The U/8's used this opportunity for some pre season training. The team put on an excellent display, playing a game against some other interested kids, a game against the Dads and a final five a side match. The boys handed out footies and were excellent ambassadors for the club.
To all the families who came along to enjoy the day, many thanks.
Special thanks also to Robert Goodall from Sydney Uni for helping out all day Michael Neil-Smith

Sydney University 'Aussie Rules' Family Day 2006
| Thanks
to Rodney Monk for these great images from the Sydney University Family
Day. Sydney Uni Senior Coach Daniel 'Archie' Archer said that many of
his players were not used to having young screaming fans cheering them
onto the ground. The senior players all got a buzz from it as did the
younger players from Newtwon Swans. This has been a great start to a
long term relationship with SUANFC - let's keep up the support. |
Under 7 match report-1st April 2006
With the pressure for a Swans jumper building relentlessly over the summer, the under 7s made the journey to Drummoyne Oval for the much anticipated opening game of the season. There were lots of new faces, so it’s a big welcome to Zac, David, Declan, Maddy, Lulu, Angus, Max T, Indi, Finn, Zelda and Pearl.
It was all systems go from the first bounce. Vijaya took the first tap of the season, with Finn and Indi clearing it out of the middle. Before long, the old guard of Callunn, Callum, Kyle and Lawrence were in action with some impressive moves down the corridor. Against a stiff breeze, Lawrence had a couple of early penetrating shots before landing the first goal of the season. Callum quickly followed suit after receiving a great pass from Callunn. Meanwhile, Max T got in a good first touch and kick, Indi and Johnnie were starting to look dangerous, and Lawrence scored his second goal for the match.
Pearl opened the second term with an excellent hit out. Johnnie and Ollie took over in the midfield, while Maddy was very lively in defence. Great passing from Johnnie and a long kick from Kyle gave us goal number four, with clever work from Vijaya resulting in another just before the final break.
The last term saw Lulu, Declan, Lawrence and Johnnie all get valuable touches as the whole team started to create passing opportunities in the wide open spaces. Finn made a brave return after accidentally copping a ball in the face earlier in the game and when Johnnie’s long shot hit the post right on the final whistle, there was a unanimous feeling that this group of under 7s could be in for a big season. Congratulations to everyone who played and helped contribute to an excellent team effort. Those who didn’t get a mention are bound to pop up in future reports…and bad luck to Indi, whose goal from the middle would have been allowed in a grown-ups’ game.

Match Report Under 7’s ADO Sat 1st Julyth May V’s Wests
The last game before the mid season break saw the U/7’s play together as a single team for the first time in a few weeks.
A slight imbalance in numbers meant that the Newtown Swans dominated the first term. Maddie and Zak teamed well out of the middle, Johnnie was covering a lot of ground in front of goal and finding space. Vijay kicked a well timed goal and with weight of numbers around the ball it was all Newtown.
The second and third terms saw Angus, Vijay, Joseph, Callum, Indy and others put on a Wests jumper and balance up the game ( Well done to all those who volunteered to help Wests ).
Indy took one of the marks of the season and Callum pulled off another one of his trade mark hand pass interceptions – both while playing for Wests. The teams were more balanced now and the football was better for it.
Declan did some great defensive work, Pearl gathered a few kicks, Oliver, Callun, Connor and Finn chased hard, David managed to lose his opponent and presented consistently as an option for Newtown. Lawrence held a couple of great marks which resulted in long range shots and goaled just on the siren.
Some of the team were backing up again for a half time run on at the SCG in the Swans V’s Fremantle match. They will sleep well. . Have a great holiday everyone and see you all in a couple of weeks.

Under 7's 17.6.06 Vs Concord cats atGoddard Oval
United by a love of the game, a love that transcends tribal prejudice, two noble teams joined together to battle a common foe, thus the Newtown Swans Under 7’s Brett Kirks and Drummoyne Power forged a mighty alliance…. SWAN POWER ! This happy composite met with the Concord Cats in the post dawn light of Goddard Oval, on the morning of June 17, 2006. And on this cold morn, the superstars of the future showed what a powerhouse Sydney’s Inner West Junior football has become.
SwanPower started by dominating the ruck, pushing forward and giving Max an early opportunity, which he coolly converted. Full Points. Again, strong work in the middle and slick passing by Zelda pushing out to the wing provided more chances, but the Cats fought back. Strong tagging by Callum prevented any goals, and the Cats were hassled into scoring several behinds. Our tactic of man-on-man defense held true, covering many attacks. Gus was strong kicking into space and creating opportunities for the centres, and skillful passing by Pearl led to another forward push. Scores were level at the first break.
Our colleagues from Drummoyne were strong in the 2nd term, notably Rory and Timothy, who were thwarting every Cat Attack. They combined well with our slick outfit and at the 2nd break scores were still even.
The last term was highlighted by the brave efforts of David, who, after being given a job on a red-headed goal sneak, limited his opponents tally to nil. David and Finn held the backline together and prevented many chances once the Cats got a sniff. With Swan Power behind by 1 goal in extra time, Max and Callum again chimed to the timbre of a well oiled clock to find Rory in the forward line while Pearl, Zelda and Gus made the Cats guess with precision leads. Rory kicked true and on the hooter, scored were tied.
The team was delighted by the result, but the best was still to come. Our friends led the way with a rendition of ‘The Power To Win’, and we invited them to join and sing a rousing rendition of ‘Cheer Cheer’. Friends for life. All plays are to be congratulated for the fine spirit both on and off the field today: Brett Kirk will be impressed when I tell him.
Swan Cam would like to finish by saying how impressed he is with the skills of the players, and the improvement is considerable. The AFL draft of 12 years hence will have quite a job on its hands….

NEWTOWN SWANS v GLEBE GREYHOUNDS Saturday May 20, 2006
Under 6s Reds
By Sherrin Marks
Teamwork and strong marking featured in a spectacular outing by the Newtown Swans on the weekend. Back at Jubilee Oval for the first time since Round One, the Swans’ confidence levels were high after an impressive display the week before. The toss went our way and we were running toward the big goal in the first third. It wasn’t long before a quick tap out of the centre led to our first goal, a strong kick by Louis from an unselfish handpass by Dash in the forward pocket. Newtown would have scored again within minutes, courtesy of Jordan, but for the fact that it was disallowed as he was playing centre. Glebe’s first goal attempt was beautifully spoiled by Mitch with a strong defensive mark. But they soon followed with a behind. Louis returned Dash’s favour in front of the posts, setting her up for a goal, but a slightly wayward boot only delivered a point. A great defensive mark by Hayden spoiled Glebe’s next raid on our goal. Then a massive bomb – must have travelled 10m - set them up nicely just before the first break. But the Swans were quick to reply via another Louis goal. The second third opened with a revitalised Greyhound outfit which hit back hard. Good scrapping by Allegra, Mitch and Hayden in the centre kept the Swans in possession, but a big hit on Hayden saw him taken off injured – our first real casualty for the season. But it wouldn’t be long before he returned from the bench with a strong midfield mark to set up Louis in front of goal. Minutes before the close of the second third, there was a bit of scrapping in the forward pocket between Tim and his opposite number, which continued into the final break – another first for the season. Emotions were running high in the final period. Hayden impressed with a long bomb to goal from a strong tap out of the centre, but was only rewarded with a point. Dash shone with a stunning mark in the centre, followed by a Hayden handball to Mitch for another behind. With two minutes to go Allegra threatened with a strong kick – only to be spoiled with a strong Glebe defensive mark. Jessica returned the favour when Glebe launched its next attack on goal with a solid mark in defence. All agreed this was a solid outing with good signs for next week’s clash.
Under 6s Whites
By Arden Fast
With the return of cooler and overcast weather providing a real winter footy atmosphere, the other Newtown Under 6s combination took to the field against the Greyhounds. This Swans outfit was a pretty inexperienced line-up and they got off to a slow start. It didn’t help that the two Newtown forwards were up against a ‘flood’ of four Greyhounds defenders.
After the first change the Swans began to get into their stride and with Wesley and Perry combining well up front and with Orrin nipping around the packs the team banged home a few majors. There were contributions all over the field with Jessica, Nicholas, Tom and Charlie all seeing some action,
In the last term Newtown took charge in the centre with Perry rucking well and with Wes pulling in some great marks and setting up heaps of opportunities for the forwards the Swannies finished off another enjoyable day of Under 6 Auskick fun.
At the end of the match both our bands of Under 6s came together to sing the club song with the coaches James and Rob. Well done all!

Match Report 4 – Under 7’s ADO Sat 27th May
It was a flurry of feathers as the swans flew every which way around the ground the day we played a full Eastern Bulldogs contingent and the Concord Cats. In the Northern end game, the pace set in quickly with Johnny taking a splendid mark off Indy’s sure kick leading to a goal in the first few minutes. The flock was settling and finding its rhythm but Easts retaliated with a behind and the chase was on! A solid boot from Lawrence to Callum found safe arms and everyone knew we were on for a good game. The drama gained momentum as Maddie went the hip and shoulder drawing oohs & ahs from the crowd! It was tit for tat with the Doggies claiming goals between the big sticks and Swans super-booting back up the other way. Lulu and her fellow centres Zelda and Indy continued working hard in clearing in the centre as did the ever vigilant Callum. Max and Callun also provided much needed defence as Easts forwards continued to exert pressure. Oliver’s tricky race around the field, confusing the opponents, great smother and Max’sIndy’s marks were highlights of the quarter and a couple more goals from Johnny made the Newtown chests swell with pride.

Once the dust had settled and drink bottles glugged it was back in with the centres moving forward, backs to centres, etc. With some height advantage Swans were gaining the ball in the centre but finding Easts defence equally resilient. Once they got the ball, Easts were able to short pass very effectively, a good model for the Swans to absorb. An Easts’ goal was well deserved but it also put fire in the Swannies’ belly! A hand-pass from Lawrence to Maddie slowed the pace down effectively and a great smother by Johnny meant the Swans were taking back some control of the game. This was shored up by a great goal from Callum. Another good hand-ball from Oliver to Maddie and we knew the Swans were up to something…and Maddie seemed to be the key! In a moving end to the tight quarter the ball was scooped up by Johnny sent through to Lawrence and onto Indy for a terrific goal. Phew! Right on the hooter!
It was a tight game, a good game, peppered with kicks, handballs and zone encroachment. Not an easy game to umpire but Fred did his duty with the consummate ease of a Dad well-versed in sorting out playstation disputes. What Fred wouldn’t have anticipated was a tackle from a member of his own team! For legal reasons the player can’t be named…but it was a corker of a tackle that almost brought the umpire down! I told you it was a game that had everything… With a solid kick from Indy to the safe hands of Lawrence, a behind was the reward. Callun sent a great kick down to the forwards soon after which ended in a goal by Lawrence– great stuff. Max and Johnny backed up with some great clearing and Callum and Zelda continued to defend rigorously. Another Lawrence behind, a great smother from Callum and a solid boot from Lulu were icing on the cake for a good match up on the hallowed home grounds of Allen Davidson. Cheer Cheer the Under 7’s.

Under 7 match report History repeated itself this week with another exhilarating early morning trip to Jubilee Park to take on the Glebe Greyhounds. 20 May
The under 7s were again split into two groups. Joseph took on tossing duties for our group and couldn’t resist the lure of the large goalposts when the coin obligingly landed tails up. With Glebe a little short on numbers, David and Max started for the Greyhounds. This turned out to be the best transfer deal since Hawthorn gave Nathan Thompson to the Kangaroos. Both of them were everywhere, especially in the first term. However, this was a day where some of the big effort put in over the past few weeks really paid off for some of the less experienced Newtown players. I don’t know what Zak and Connor put on their pre-game weeties, but I wouldn’t mind some of it on a Monday morning. The ball just seemed to follow them everywhere. Zak used his height to great advantage to pull in several overhead marks, while Connor always seemed to be where the ball was bouncing. It was only a matter of time before he scored a well deserved goal in the second term. But back to the first term. The wide open spaces of Jubilee Park gave plenty of opportunity to burn off excess energy. With Lulu’s stunning cap providing a beacon in the middle, Callum and Johnnie were soon zipping in and out of packs and running their full 10 metres. Kyle was their main target up forward, leading into space and taking a couple of strong chest marks early.
His first effort kept the boundary umpire rather than the goal umpire busy but he soon had two goals on the board. Joseph and Sam were also trying very hard while at the other end, Callunn took a goal saving grab on the last line. The third term opened with Sam tapping out to Joseph, who attempted a spiralling torpedo. Glebe managed to pounce on the loose ball and send it straight back but Callum intercepted and passed it to Kyle who unleashed a 20 meter daisy cutter pass which landed with a reassuring thwack on Johnnie’s chest. Unfortunately for Johnnie, the mark wasn’t paid but he soon recovered the ball to score the first of three outstanding running goals.
A late charge from Glebe, which included a goal from David, kept the Newtown defence on its toes. Max, now back in Swans colours, got away a timely clearance, while Kyle and Callum’s balletic efforts resulted in a clash of heads, that only seemed to make them more determined to get the ball down to Johnnie. And that’s exactly where it was when the final whistle blew. Hawkeye
The second term opened with some sustained forward pressure from the Greyhounds. Newtown responded with some classy counter attacks as Kyle, Joseph and Sam rotated kick-in duties and Johnnie and Lulu helped set up scoring opportunities. Soon Newtown was peppering the goals. While Connor took his chance, Zak twice came close and Callum hit the post.

Match Report 2 – Under 7’s Jubilee Oval Sat 20th May
With Coach huddled around his old crystal set in Ballarat hoping to hear news of the game, it was a journey back to greyhound land for the team. In the Eastern end match up, the game rivalled the Swans v Doggies for pace, precision and drama. Showing true footy commitment, Tripp joined Glebe to help out on numbers. He got early touch off Declan who continues to court the selectors and then a flurry of activity followed with Finn, Vijaya and Max working together to get the ball to point-scoring Declan. This was followed up by a snatch and grab from Indy, onto Declan and the Swans had their first goal. The centres were clearing the ball magnificently assisting Maddie to boot a quick point. The forwards were also now in top gear and with barely enough time to slurp your latte, it was another all out effort from Erin who sent it over to Indy and another Swans goal! A superb smother from the “smotherer” Vijaya enabled Declan to score again and the Swans (and proud parents) were flapping their wings. Max then brought the crowd to their feet with a scorcher which he sent off hot potato-style to Vijaya for a great goal. A classic Swans play followed with Lawrence booting one to Indy - Angus onto Vijaya and it’s yep another goal. At this point the backs, Zelda and Zac worked some defending magic, keeping the ball away… but drama down the other end drew focus! A hasty Sherrin went deep into Finn’s face and enforcing the very sore face rule, the courageous Finn was led off by the forwards coaching staff (his parents). But what a champion… he quickly re-joined his team-mates and was rewarded by Max scoring another team goal!
In the following quarter the forwards took up the goal-scoring mantle and took a great mark off LawrenceMax to thread one through the posts. Vijaya continued to smother as if all his birthday presents depended on it and prevented many Glebe goals. Thankfully Tripp was back in town and scored a terrific goal followed by once again attempting a screamer. This ended in a slightly twisted ankle and somewhat generously, a free kick! But wait, no it’s an unexpected handball to LawrenceOliver for his first goal of the term. Indy sent another accurate dart through to Lawrence for another goal and it was anyone’s guess how high the scoreboard would ascend. Another extraordinary moment of play occurred when Indy stole the ball off the actual foot of his opponent and sent it flying onto Tripp for a timely point. Oliver backed up his previous goal to make a matching pair and the Swans were flying high! It was noted, they were also flying all over the zones so watch it Swannies…stay in your zone, or you’ll have coach on the phone!
For the final term. Vijaya did his loyal Auskick duty playing on Glebe’s side – the crowd shifting uncomfortably – would he go the smother with as much dedication?? Thankfully it didn’t take long for Indy to boot a well deserved goal and a great mark from followed. The final term was shaped by some excellent team-sharing with handpassing on several occasions ending in a myriad of goals from Indy and Oliver ZacAngus. The backs continued to work hard, immobilising Glebe and the centres kept the ball flowing to the forwards like shiraz from Victoria. Everyone agreed the team are getting football savvy, now if we could just stick to those zones… Cheer Cheer the Under 7’s!!

MATCH REPORT Saturday May 13, 2006
NEWTOWN SWANS v WESTS MAGPIES
Round Five was a cold and dirty affair for the Newtown Swans, coloured with the first hint of controversy for the season. The dew was only just starting to lift from the black dirt strewn across Picken Oval as the Swans ran on for what was set to be a tough encounter.
The Magpies looked professional, a good mix of height, speed and strength. Their pre-match warm up (star jumps) was pure precision. They had the home ground advantage. Then they won the toss, forcing us to run into the sun.
Hayden opened the scoring for the Swans – an early behind from a quick tap out of the centre. Wests hit back, punting one straight through the middle, despite some desperate Swans defence. Muddy conditions led to scrappy play and hard fought contests in the middle, with Callan and Jessica consistently winning some tough ball.
Goals were traded early, but at the mid-way mark of the first third, Hayden found his feet. By the first break he had booted three and the Swans were away. It was during the second third that the muttering from the sidelines began.
In what many saw as an overly generous interpretation of the 15 metre rule, Magpie after Magpie tucked the ball under their arm and sprinted half the length of the field to arrive within spitting distance of the posts. No bounce. No pass. No handball. No whistle!
The Swans bench was disapproving, but held their tongues and let the umpire get on with the game, quietly noting that our lot were well on the way to mastering the bounce on the run. The second and third thirds were marked by some strong defence by Wes and good kicking out of the middle by Tim.
There were impressive goals from Louis and Perry, one or two of them aided by a key Wests defender becoming engrossed in making sand castles near one of the behind posts, momentarily taking his eye off the play.
The Swans dominated the final third with a bag of goals, finishing with a powerful Perry punt through the big sticks.
The post match analysis from the sidelines concluded that skill levels were significantly up this week, particularly kicking. And the emergence of the post-goal high-five was definitely a match highlight!

Under 7 match report #1 13 May 2006
Our rapidly growing under 7 squad is now regularly being split into two teams. This provides a much better chance for everyone to get a touch of the ball and has allowed more than a few sleepers to showcase their talents. All we need now is for a couple of volunteers to take on photography duties, so that these great sporting moments can be recorded for posterity on the website (contact the Webmaster if you’re interested).
This week, a team consisting of Callum, Callunn, Erin, Indi, Johnnie, Kyle, Lulu, Max R, Sam, Zak and Zelda took on the Concord Cats in a closely fought encounter that produced more packs than a Brett Kirk training video.
In what seems to be developing into the regulation play, Concord emulated Newtown’s feat from last week to post a goal in the opening minute. But keen not to get blown away, the Swans responded in kind. A dashing clearance from Indi landed lace out on Callum’s chest. He then produced one of the more extraordinary round the corner passes to Kyle, whose long shot at goal narrowly missed. This proved to be only a temporary set back when, taking advantage of a slightly overweighted kick-in, Kyle grabbed another mark and this time steered it through the big posts.
However, these weren’t the sort of cats that lie around the loungeroom spreading flees. The ball was soon back at their end, where Max and Sam got some important possessions. They were kept focused by Indi, Johnnie and Erin, who were asserting themselves in the midfield and bringing Zelda, Zak and Lulu into the game. Another long pass from Indi enabled Kyle to score a second goal, while a lightning fast string of passes between Callunn, Callum and Kyle almost caught the goal umpire napping.
Newtown’s creative forward work continued in the second term. With service from the midfield being hotly contested by the Cats, Callum broke the log jam with a bouncing goal that would have done Peter Daicos (ask your parents who he is) proud. Indi,Erin and Johnnie and nailing a 6 pointer. With confidence no longer in short supply, Indi was soon in the middle of it again, grabbing a ball pushed forward by Callunn and Johnnie, pinning his ears back and making a running goal look like, well, child’s play. This seemed to give everyone a big lift. Grabbing yet another pass from Johnnie, Callum was soon taking a strong mark at centre half forward, playing on and booting Newtown’s final goal for the term.
In the final term, Newtown’s defence was really put to the test. Callum, Indi, Zelda and Lulu were right in the thick of it, while Max, Zak, Sam and Johnnie provided a focus at the other end. Despite a great smother from Kyle, Concord scored the first goal but then Kyle took a huge mark at centre half back and passed it on to Johnnie, who left three opponents in the dust to score a great running goal. After that, it was just nip and tuck as both sides displayed their handballing skills and determination not to give an inch. A few near misses by both teams had us all wondering just when the next goal would come, but before we could dwell on that too much, a giant plate of oranges appeared on the boundary line and the umpire blew his whistle to bring an entertaining encounter to a close.

Match Report 2 – Under 7’s ADO Sat 13th May
With Coach back in town, it was Picken Oval that saw the old rivalry of West Suburbs Maggies vs Newtown Swannies renewed. The battle of the birds…and what a game it was! Very early on it was clear that every goal would count as the ball went flying back and forth across the oval. A great pick-up by the forwards Finn to Declan, was quickly followed by work good work from the backs who sent it off to David, on to Maddie and Finn in classic Swans’ set play. A kick fest soon followed with Declan kicking a point then a goal in what would have many hacks calling Declan an early Brownlow contender. Wests managed to wrestle the ball from the Swans to kick a point but in one of the plays of the day, Lawrence marked a corker, kicked to Oliver who scooped up, sent if off to the ever vigilant Vijaya and onto Declan for another goal! West backed up their previous point with another and then a goal. But were the Swans diminished? No! A great kick from Pearl sent the team into action with Finn scoring a Swans point to seal the deal. Another goal from Declan just seemed like icing on the cake and it was only the first “quarter”!
As the orange quarters did the rounds and Coach passed on words of wisdom, the Swans looked dangerous as they took to the field. It was hard to make out the action as the ball ping-ponged around the field but some great touches from Zac and Max were highlights - then a behind from Vijaya followed by a sensational goal from Angus was enough to have us reaching for our mobiles to ring Roosy. A determined Wests grappled back action and scored but then another classic play from Swans followed: Centres to Max with a super kick to Maddie ending in one of her best goals. A great mark from Declan sealed his sponsorship chances while Angus’s next big kick made a point. Maddie kicked another point, Lawrence took a super mark and sent it off to Declan to David for a great pass to Vijaya and another Swans goal was secured. Thankfully the hooter sounded to give the RSI a break…
Wests kicked off the quarter with a sudden goal which charged the spirit of Newtown. A great kick from Max ended in a point and then soon after a corker of a mark from yes - Max, ended in another behind. Great stuff. A goal delivered by Lawrence was overdue and the fans were pleased until Wests went in quick with another point! But there was always Vijaya’s extraordinary defence work to keep the fans happy. He was relentless, smothering everything! The quarter was hot hot hot with Lawrence trying to take a screamer off his opponent’s unsuspecting shoulders! Then great goals from Oliver, Lawrence and a great mark from David just completed the day. Great to see the gang united to sing the team song.
Cheer Cheer the Under 7’s!

Under 7 match report, 6 May 2006
With the school holidays over, our coaching guru back in town and perfect playing conditions, Alan Davidson Oval was bristling by 8 am with hyped up under 7s primed to go against the Maroubra Saints. The good turnout meant the playing group was split in two, a relatively painless process once it was accepted the average team usually doesn’t need 9 full forwards. And with parental loyalty on the line, yours truly chose to cover the game at the Sydney Park Road end.
This game got off to a cracking start, with Declan, Kyle and Lawrence combining for a goal in the opening minute. However, the strong marking Maroubra outfit weren’t going to let that bother them too much. Aided by Zak, who agreed to play with them in the opening term, they settled into their zones (something some of our more mobile Swannies could practise a bit) and were soon passing the ball from end to end.
With a free flowing but tight contest looming, all the Newtown players focused on getting the ball forward. Max T got the ball to Lawrence, whose shot at goal narrowly missed. At the other end, Kyle took a tremendous grab from a kick in and handballed it Declan, who’s booming kick forward was repelled by some steely Saints defence. Then it was Johnnie and Lawrence’s turn to team up as they got the ball to Indi who landed a long overdue goal. But Maroubra made sure there wasn’t too much time for high fives. The ball was soon back at their end, where Max R was busy with some great kick-ins.
Callum’s strong tap gave Newtown first touch of the ball in the second term. Max R pounced on it, got it back to Callum, who passed it to Johnnie. This one was not going to get away. After a display of concentration that would have had Matthew Lloyd looking at his watch, Johnnie split the middle and followed it up with an even better shot from the boundary a couple of minutes later. Meanwhile, Indi showed some great defensive skills, Max R. handballed with great team spirit in the middle and Lawrence and Kyle provided good targets – Kyle’s long shot from the boundary narrowly missing just before the end of the term.
Maroubra really upped the pressure in the final term. Zak, back in his Swans jumper, kept Newtown in it with a valuable point and with Callum running everywhere, there was plenty of enthusiasm on display. Connor and Ollie gave Newtown a presence in the middle, Kyle and Declan rebounded in tandem and it wasn’t long before Finn took his chance and scored a goal. A couple more points (a poster from Max R and a near miss from Finn) showed Newtown had plenty of firepower left. A strong mark by Indi in defence triggered a string of passes between Lawrence, Finn and Max R and set the scene for the final play of the day: a pass from Lawrence to Callum, who made sure of the six points.

Match Report – Under 7’s ADO Sat 29th April
With a light rain falling on Alan Davidson Oval it would be interesting to see how the team would go without the coach in town. Mike kindly stepped up to umpire the match and supportive parents attended to on-field responsibilities and conditioning of the team. A full crew of Easts descended upon only 15 Swannies and they were out for real game. A few terrific Easterners stepped over to make up the Swans’ numbers and we were off.
It was a blur of feverish activity in the centres until Lawrence managed a hand-pass to Kyle that almost eventuated in a goal – touched, a point. In the following forward kick-fest, Kyle kicked another behind, Maddie kicked a behind and then in a classic play, our Eastern buddy took a mark, passed to Vijaya onto Oliver for the first goal of the term! Kyle and David punted more great behinds and Lawrence took a great finger-tip mark. Trip skilfully evaded the strong Easts defence to back up the first goal and the Swans were marching home. Angus kicked some penetrating punts down the field and Maddy continued to out race everyone. As usual Callum chased the ball down any time it was up the other end and all other members of the team did excellent support work for the forwards. Great stuff!
As more under 7 Swans arrived at the field – no doubt drawn by an unseen call of the wild, Easts determined that it was time to play two matches. Sadly your commentator could only be at one, but both teams played exceptionally well.
In defence, Indy and Vijaya were magnificent - smothering balls like they were mere cotton wool balls and booting them out of the danger zone. Easts were still able to shore up their score with a few goals but the Swans remained positive and alert. After the change and with only two players in the centre, the pressure was really on. The ball spent more time in the Easts end and great scrambling by Maddy, Kyle and Lawrence prevented there being more goals booted. Angus and Trip worked tirelessly as Easts poured on the pressure. Finally near the end of the term, Pearl came on to join the centres and like a positive omen for the game, the ball was cleared through to Callum and he popped a great goal.
In the other match it was reported that an even but gripping game was enjoyed by all. Goals and points were kicked by Max, Zelda, Declan, Oliver, and Callun making it a high-scoring game. Lulu kept the ball flowing and was able to pass at just the right time and the flow back and forth for the spectators and their straining necks was a chiropractor’s dream. The Swans belted out the song not once, but twice as a team united and it was all over…until the next game! Cheer Cheer the Under 7’s!

Under 7 match report, 8 April 2006
After an excellent opening game against Drummoyne, the under 7s were ready for a big game against the fast and tricky Glebe Greyhounds.
Following her big effort at training, Maddie called the toss for Newtown and nonchalantly chose to kick into a strong breeze. The midfield was primed for the challenge and a string of quick handpasses from Kyle, Johnnie and Declan and immediately had the ball moving forward. With Glebe up to the initial challenge, the ball zoomed back and forth at a frenetic pace that demanded close scrutiny from statisticians, scribes and gaping parents. After a couple of minutes, the pace settled. DeclanLawrence and Maddy set up some penetrating attacking moves from defence that brought Max T, Max R and Vijaya into the game. And with Callum chasing hard after everything that came near him, it wasn’t long before Ollie popped up to kick Newtown’s first goal.
The second term started with a solid hit-out from Zac that set up Max T for a goal. Johnnie’s nimble effort resulted in another a couple of minutes later, with Declan adding a third. The forward line was moving around well, with Kyle and Finn presenting plenty of targets. Up back, Lulu and Max R were making life difficult for the dangerous Glebe forwards, who were threatening to make their break.
The final term was as close as it was spectacular. Max R, Finn, Declan and Angus were all busy around the packs. Callum continued to smother and chase, while Vijaya rendered superlatives redundant with a stunning three goal burst. By the end of the game, we’d all lost track of the scores and of who was playing where, but all agreed that it was a tremendous game of under 7 football by both teams (and certainly more uplifting than some of Sunday’s results!).

Under 6's Match Report 13.08.05
The last game of the season inspired a big effort from all the under 6s against the Maroubra Saints. There was plenty of passing right from the first bounce, some excellent leading in the forward line and plenty of finger burning taps and grabs in defence. In one of the lower scoring games of the year, Callunn kicked two goals, while Johnny, Callum and Lawrence landed one each. Kyle, Wesley, Vijaya and Elliot all had near misses. This game was a good measure of the great progress of this year’s mosquito fleet. At the start of the season we had about 8 or 9 players with any confidence in kicking or passing a ball. We now have the nucleus of both an under 7 and under 6 team for next year, which speaks volumes for the effort and enthusiasm of all the players and our coach, Michael Neil-Smith. So, having enjoyed putting these reports together and well and truly exhausting my supply of cut and paste sporting clichés, I’m left with the privilege of thanking the following: Allegra, Caillin, Callum, Callunn, Connor, Elliott, Erin, Jemima, Jimmy, Johnny, Kyle, Lawrence, Max, Oliver, Rohan, Roisin, Timothy,Vijaya and Wesley. Apologies to anyone I’ve left out and see you all at the presentation day. Oh, and thanks to Michael for also having the patience to be an umpire!

Under 8's Match Report 13.08.05
And so the season has passed - where did it go? It was only yesterday that we were playing Drummoyne in the season opener, getting sunburnt and only just having packed away the small round red ball with the stitches and exchanged it for the oval red ball with the laces.
Rather than write my usual weekly report I thought I would take a few moments to reflect on the season that was 2005.
It was my first involvement with some boys and girls. So to Banjo, Cian, Harrison, James, Anna, Kurt, Jesse, and Aaron I enjoyed my first season with you and I look forward to seeing you again next year.
To the 'old boys and girls' Jay, Michael, Djanala, Curtis, Sal, Daniel, Louis and Harry, I marvel in your ever increasing skills and abilities each year.
So this what I have enjoyed about being your coach this year: Wednesday night training - especially sending you all around the posts and back, our warm up games, skills sessions and then being told by you how I can't umpire because I missed something that happened whilst I was screaming at you to get back into your zones. Saturday games when I could move up and down the field watching you all so successfully play some excellent football. As individuals I enjoyed watching you play as a team - does that make sense? Anyway this is what I saw in you over the season: Jay - your ever improving kicking and your abiltity to get in and have a go.
Cian - You''ve come a long way since the start of the season. You can kick pretty well, just keep practicing over the off season.
Banjo - Thanks for showing me just how easy this game is - well the way you play anyhow. Your skill level defies your age and was best summed up today when you kicked the ball back over your head and almost straight to your own player. Well done!
Harrison - I enjoyed being your coach. You always try your best and if there is a better defender in the competition I didn't see him or her. A top season young fella.
Michael - You have mastered the swivel away from the defence and your kick gets better each year. Its tough being the coach's son but you handled it well.
James - I like the skills I see and hope to see more of you next year.
Djanala - Still setting the pace for the girls. Your marking and kicking is as good as anyone's.
Kurt - My 'Most Improved'. Your confidence is better than ever and rightly so. You are at your best in defence and you should be proud of your efforts this season.
Anna - Anna, Anna, Anna. Not only is training finished, footy is finished! I enjoyed your company this year and I hope that you enjoyed yourself enough to come back next year.
Jesse - You are ready for the rough and tumble of the 9s. You have improved with every game this season and play just like Jude your favourite player.
Aaron - I hope you enjoyed your introduction to the team as much as we liked having you with us. Top stuff little fella!
Curtis - I waited three seasons for the game you played in the wet against the Power. I'm sure you were triplets that day so often did I see you with the ball in your hand. Once we master that bounce of the ball there will be no stopping you.
Sal - Your courage, ability and spotsmanship are a credit to you. The 100% effort you put in every week is infectious. You are welcome to play on my team for the rest of your life!
Daniel - The image that I have of you is a little terrier darting off after the ball. You put in always and I love watching the joy you get from your footy.
Louis - You skills never fail to impress. Your ability belies your years.
Harry - Thank you for entertaining me each week with your football ability. I would pay money to watch you play!
Alexander - We miss all aspects of your game. We haven't filled your role yet and probably won't. See Harry's comment above.
To all of you thanks for the season. Sorry if I screamed too much. Despite that I enjoyed every week of the season and I learnt a lot more from each of you than you could ever realise. It was my privilege to be associated with your team.
Finally, any enjoyment that you got out of the season was made possible by some excellent people. So to my manager Kathleen thanks for all that you have done it would have been impossible without you, to the 'apprentice umpire' who has earned his stripes and is ready to get on the whites and do it for real - well done Peter you make Saturday an enjoyable time for me. To Renee who fronted in the dark and cold EVERY Wednesday - thanks for all of your efforts, especially when the tempers frayed a little; to Steve - cheers and enjoy the rest of the season; and to Trevor for his help at training. I think that covers you all, and to the mums and dads and other family members who ensure that the kids front each week, I know its tough to get there sometimes but on behalf of the kids, thank you.
Lastly, to those at the club thanks for letting me be involved with such a top bunch of kids and parents and "to Jason, thanks for the tough job of deciding the awards each week."
See you in '06,
Michael Doherty

Under 6's Match Report 06.08.05
The accommodating environs of Jubilee park provided a great venue for our last away game and with the return of a couple of our missing stars, it was a full strength under 6 unit that took on the ever dangerous Glebe Greyhounds.
The Swans got off to a great start with Lawrence, Callum and Wesley setting up a steady supply of ball from midfield. The forwards were lively and soon had the leather (rubber actually) fizzing through the sticks. Johnny put four goals on the board and Callunn one. Erin, Max and Elliot all had great attempts stopped on the goal line.
In the second term, Kyle, Oliver and Vijaya teamed up well in the midfield. Lawrence provided a damaging mobile target with his excellent marking skills, while Wes and Callum were rewarded for hard running with one and two goals respectively. Callain was also unlucky to miss out on his first major.
In the final term, Callunn and Erin popped up everywhere in the midfield. Lawrence, Johnny and Callum were all involved in end to end passing moves, while Kyle with five goals, Vijaya with three and Jemima with one displayed a keen instinct for percentage. With only one game to go, it will be interesting to see whether any better examples of teamwork can make it into the final match report.

Under 6's Match Report 30.07.05
With the warm weather enticing more than a few Auskickers away from their normal Saturday pastime, the under 6s, minus Vijaya, Lawrence and our coaching guru, took on a spirited Wests outfit, whose numbers were sportingly boosted by Kyle, Elliot and Max in the opening term.
The game got off to a lively start with Timmy and Erin driving the ball out of the centre. Johnny was proving a dangerous target and soon had two goals on the board, while Callum was mopping up in defence. In the second term, Callunn and Oliver also showed some midfield skills, the passing improved and Jemimah threaded a great goal. In the final term, Wesley and Callunn held together the defence, while at the other end, Callum chased everything that came his way and booted three goals. While there were moments of chaos, it was a pretty good all round effort. Freddy showed he was a fine exponent of the whistle while first-aider Audrey judiciously applied the odd ice pack.

Under 6's Match Report 23.07.05

After a long mid-season break that had even the most patient Auskicker complaining more than Eddie McGuire, it was game on from the opening bounce when the senior under 6s took on the Concord Cats.
Johnny was obviously rearing to go and put a great running goal on the board in the opening minute. Lawrence and Vijaya were both marking strongly in the midfield and soon set up Johnny for two more.
In the second term, Lawrence moved forward and posted three majors of his own. Kyle was imposing himself in the middle, combining with Oliver as he drifted up from the forward line. Callum’s smothering was as relentless as ever and included a spectacular kamikaze effort with his face. Undeterred and determined to be there for the team photo, he was soon back on his feet. The Cats were also showing some form but some solid marking by Callunn and good chasing by Max in his first game back from illness, ensured the defence weathered the storm.
It was nail-biting action in a tight final term. As the Cats closed in, Vijaya, Lawrence, and CallunnJohnny choreographed some penetrating counter-attacks, Oliver and Max kept focused on the ball and when Kyle landed a long bomb goal on the siren, it was clear that this group of Swans was as determined to finish the season with a bang as their grown up namesakes.

Under 8's Match Report 23.7.05
After a brief break when the Coach sought guidance from his Guru in Hong Kong, and the players had a well earned break from the rigours of playing and training, it was back to 'The Pond' to face the always tough Drummoyne Power. Unlike our previous encounter when the skies opened up and the rain fell for the first time in a long time, today dawned clear and bright. It was going to be a hard and fast track!
The much anticipated return of Louis from his coaching camp in a secret French location ensured that he was ready to play and our captain this week was Curtis. Curtis was given this honour after his inspirational last game against the Power.
It was a tough game as always against the Power as they have a very big, strong and mobile team. This meant that our defence, led by Anna, along with Cian, Daniel and Aaron, had to 'man/girl up' to keep the opposition's scoring to a minimum. For much of the game they did this and it was real ding-dong tussle between the Drummoyne forwards and our backline.
In the centre it was the efforts of Harrison, Harry, Sal and Michael who made sure that we got good quality ball to the 'superboots' in the forward line. Power made sure that we had to work hard at all contests for the ball and our fortunately our centres were up for the challenge.
In the forward line it was the solid kicking efforts of Jesse, Banjo, Jay, and Daniel who made sure that the Power backs were going to be 'chasing yellow rubber' as we peppered the posts. Each goal was well earned as Drummoyne played it hard and tough in defence.
We were a little rusty this week and I am sure
