The
Under 16s are still looking for a few more players for the 2010 season.
It is important we all get behind our Senior Team. If you know any
eligible players please ask them to come down and meet Wil the coach.
They can have a training session to see if they like the Club. Anyone

As many
would be aware, Steve Pauner died tragically on Sunday,24
January, 2010. His funeral was held at Rookwood Cemeteryon Wednesday 3 February and attended by
500-600 people from all walks of life - his family and people that had
known
Steve,including many from the
Newtown community.
Steve
Pauner was a great stalwart of the Newtown Junior Australian Football
Club (the
Newtown Swans). He had been involved with the Club from its early days
and had
been its Treasurer for the last four years. Steve was very
community-minded and
loved to watch hissons,
Finnian and Caillin, play in the Junior
Competition.
He wasa devoted
father and both he and his
wife Margaret gave a tremendous amount of time and energy to the club.
Steve
was a quiet achiever with a wicked sense of humour and was much loved
and
respected by everyone at the club. He will be sorely missed. Our
thoughts are
with Margaret and the boys.

Update 26th Feb 2010
This
is just a quick reminder that it is the final Friday night training
session at Mahoney tomorrow night. We have seen a good turnout from
many of the squad so make sure that you are in attendance with runners
& a full water bottle. We will be getting the balls out so it’s
time to start working on the skills again.
Thursday night training commences on the 4th March at ADO. The session
runs from 6.00pm to 7.30 & Tuesday training will begin closer to
the season start.
In addition to Thursday nights we will be training at Mahoney Oval on
Sunday mornings for 4 weeks beginning on Sunday 7th March. We will
endeavour to organise a trial match for Sunday 28th March so it is
expected that all players will make themselves available.
We will also be organising a kick to kick session for the parents so
it’s time to pull the boots out for the seniors.
Finally, the Swans are coming to ADO with players in attendance on
Wednesday 10th March.

2010 TRAINING STARTS
Hi all,
This is just a quick note to remind you that pre-season training will
commence at 6.00 pm this Friday, 12th
February at HJ Mahoney Reserve, Wharf Road, Marrickville.
While it was intended to begin with the U14s & 16s other teams have
expressed interest so we have opened it up for all players from the U10s
up.
For the information of the group
please note the following arrangements for Friday:
Wear:
t-shirt or singlet, shorts and trainers (boots may be brought along but
the session will be predominately running) Bring: hat/sunscreen if still
sunny and water bottle full of drink Wet weather: the session will go
ahead if raining, unless storm/lightening makes it
dangerous. Bring a towel/dry clothes to change into after the session if
wet
Coaches/Managers: are welcome to participate (especially if the festive season has
been too festive...)
It would be appreciated if players
could be at Mahoney ready to start at 6pm, in which case we should be
finished by about 7pm.
Please inform your players & encourage them along. There should be
opportunities to register players for those who may have missed out on
the weekend.
It is also timely to remind all coaches & managers that the NJAFC
will continue to actively apply its age policy to teams in competition.
In the interests of player development all players are encouraged to
play in their true age group unless
there is no team available for them, in which case they will play up in
the next age group.
With regard to junior players making up numbers in senior teams, these
positions are at the discretion of the coach & parents & any
player doing so must complete the match in their true
age group before they can play the next match: a player cannot
reasonably expect to choose which matches they play.
I hope to see you at Mahoney during the coming weeks.
Kind regards
Chris Venville
Football Manager

GRAND FINALS END OF SEASON UPDATE 2009
This year Newtown were in 2 Grand Finals - our U14s and U11s Red teams.
Even though we did not win a Premiership flag, we can be proud of the
efforts of both teams. The Grand Finals were a marvellous spectacle
with great teamwork, team spirit and comraderie.
U14s
Sydney Harbour Youth Competition U14s, Division 2, Grand Final on
Sunday 30 August at Macquarie University - Pennant Hills 9.13.67 def.
Newtown 6.8.44
Newtown led after the 1st Qtr and by 2 points at Half-Time and tried
valiantly in the 2nd Half, but Pennant Hills proved too good on the
day. Congratulations to them.
For Newtown it was a great disappointment and the tears flowed. But it
has been a great year and it was a mighty effort to be Minor Premiers
and to make the Grand Final. If someone had offered a GF at the start
of the year I think we would have taken it. There is no embarassment in
defeat and this team will be richer for the experience.
There has been great individual and team development this year. Well
done to the players and well done to the Coaching and Managing Group -
Trevor Hall, Paul Murphy, Brendan Read, Simon Lonergan, Chris Venville,
Tim Vaughan and Russel Keifel - a wonderful joint effort. It
demonstrates the level of organisation and committment that is needed
to be competitive at this age level.
U11s
Sydney City Junior Competition U11s Grand Final on Saturday 29
August at Picken Oval - Easts Blue 7.10.52 def. Newtown Red 1.5.11
Newtown gave Easts Blue four goals start in the Semi-Final a fortnight
ago and won in the last Qtr. For a while in Saturday's Grand Final we
thought it might happen again, but wayward kicking cost Newtown dearly.
Well done Easts. They were too good on the day. And once again for
Newtown there was great disappointment and the tears flowed. However,
it's been a great year for the Newtown Reds. They were Minor Premiers
and had a fantastic year. Well done to the players and first year
Coach, Andy Ryan, and to Team Manager, Peter Newton.
The Newtown U10s Premiership team of 2008 was split into two this year.
The U11s Reds finished 2nd and the Whites finished 3rd - a formidable
result and a testament to the strength of this group at Newtown. Well
done also to Fred Pawle, Whites Coach and Bill Nettheim, Team Manager.
U10s
On Saturday at Picken Oval the 2009 U10s Representative Players for
the Sydney City Junior Competition had an exhibition match between East
vs West. East comprised rep players from Newtown, Easts, Maroubra
and Moore Park. West comprised players from Glebe, Wests, Drummoyne and
Concord. Four Newtown players represented in the East side.
In a skilful display of football by both teams, East won the match. A
Newtown player, Lawrence Neil-Smith, won the Best on Ground Award of a
new Sherrin football. Well done, Lawrence, the Newtown rep players and
the other Rep players from both sides. Also to the coaching team
involved.
Our Newtown U10s squad played some very good footy in the first two
weeks of the Finals and Coaches, Michael Neil-Smith and Rustum
Abdurahman, have done a wonderful job this year.
U9s
The 2nd week of Gala Day Round Robins was held at Picken Oval on Saturday 29 August. TheNewtown
Reds and Newtown Whites played some great footy over these two weeks
and will be better for the experience. The Round Robin Competition was
won by Maroubra. It was a well organised competition played in a great
spirit.
The Newtown Coaches, Ed Greenaway (Whites), Nico Genaris (Reds) and
Will Ley (Assistant Coach, both teams) have done a very good job
developing these players this year.
Sydney City Comp
Thanks to Nick Miller (President) and the Western Suburbs JAFC for
being our Grand Final hosts this year. All games were played in a
competitive and fair spirit. This Grand Final Day was a showcase for
Junior AFL. The relationship between the Sydney City Clubs sets a
standard of behaviour that many Regions would envy. The relationship on
Saturday between players, Team Officials, Umpires, Ground Managers,
parents and spectators was excellent.
Great Final Series for Newtown
All teams made the Finals in their respective competitions.
U14s were Minor Premiers and Grand Finalists.
U12s were Semi-Finalists.
U11s Red were Minor Premiers and Grand Finalists.
U11s White were Preliminary Finalists.
U10s made the Final Six Round Robin Group of their Comp.
The U9s, U8s and U7s had Gala Day Round Robins which were very good for their development.
Sydney Harbour Junior & Youth Competitions Awards
On Monday 24 August at Next Generation, Ryde Aquatic Centre, the Sydney
Harbour Region had its Awards night. Winners for Newtown were:
Junior Awards
Sydney City Outstanding Achievement Award (nominated by Club) - Newtown U9s Red - Will Salkeld - Newtown U9s White - Wesley Greenaway - Newtown U10s - David Charlton - Newtown U11s Red - Andrew Merriman - Newtown U11s White - Sam Lawson - Newtown U12s - Rawiri Coleman ( Outstanding Achievement Awards were for the player the Club
Coaches considered made a significant contribution to the development
of the team.)
Youth Awards
Best and Fairest for all clubs (voted by the Umpires, Home & Away Season) - U14s, Division 2 - Winner - Sam Lonergan-Stewart, Newtown
Sam polled a massive 34 votes, 18 clear of his nearest rival. Well
done, Sam - a great achievement. Tom Killingly from Newtown polled 10
votes. Well done, Tom.
Sydney City Auskick Co-ordinator of the Year: Jon Dyster.
Well done, Jon. Some recognition by the Region for the fantastic job that you have done with Newtown and Sydney City.
Umpires Awards
The Umpires Awards were held at the AFL headquarters, Moore Park, on
Wednesday 26 August. Two umpires from the Newtown Club won Awards:
Most Improved Umpire Award: Orange Shirt - Milan Monk
Dedication to Umpiring award: Green Shirt - Daniel Black
Season 2009
Great season, Newtown. And a great Final Series, particularly with
Newtown hosting the first week of Finals at Alan Davidson Oval. Some
wonderful Junior AFL Footy was played in a competitive spirit with
excellent sporting behaviour on display. Well done to all our players,
Coaches, Team Managers, Ground Managers, Canteen & BBQ crew, all
our parent helpers and the Club Committee for making it happen.
It is inspiring to watch our youngsters growing into confident, resilient and mature young adults.
2009 was certainly a year to remember for Newtown and I am sure it will
prove to be an important milestone (our 10th Anniversary) in the
further development of the Club.

Newtown Swans feast on history
The 10th Anniversary of the Newtown JAFC - a significant milestone in the Club's history - was celebrated in great style on Friday 4 September at the Grandstand Function Centre at Sydney University.
It was a fabulous location with great food and atmosphere among the
Newtown faithful, long-standing members and newer representatives from
younger teams alike. Our wonderful team of Coaches, Team Managers, Parent Helpers and Committee members were all represented.
They were joined by representatives from the AFL, including Anthony Landahl, Sydney University Australian Football Club, including President, Jason McLennan, Balmain AFC, including President, Dave Britton, Glebe JAFC, including Vice President, Jeff Wright, Drummoyne JAFC, including President, Darren Lewtas and Vice President Gavin Nelson, and Moore Park JAFC, including President Michael Luvio.
Our Special Guests were the Inaugural Committee members from 1999 - Brad Newell, Neil Jones, Eddy Greenaway, Andrew Loveridge, Jeffrey Thomas and Jenny Howard. Also present were our immediate Past Presidents, Mark Whitehead and Rodney Monk.
We were entertained by Tommy Dean as MC and the Shout Brothers band (including Andy Travers),
who did a great job. Who will forget Tommy Dean's description of the
original framers of the AFL Rules coming up with the "speccy" and the
"knee to the spine" as a great Rule.
Speeches were mercifully short and passionately given by Ed Greenaway as the Club's Founding President, Chris Venville as long-serving Football Manager, and myself as "current" President (courtesy of Tommy Dean).
Brendan Read provided a fantastic slide show of 10 years of
photographs of the Newtown Club from Auskick to Junior and Youth teams,
which was a real hit on the night. Thanks, Brendan.
Thanks to our sponsors LJ Levi Real Estate (and Janine Coyle for organising it) and the Bang Football Club (and Jon Dyster for organising that). Their sponsorship helped us enormously.
A special thanks go to the Magnificent Seven, the group who organised the whole event - Sandra Nadel, Michelle Stewart, Georgina Black, Katrina Foster, Helen Moore, Margaret Fitzgerald and Emma Gooding.
These women have over 50 years collective service to the Newtown Club
and, as this event shows, are still going strong. They are, indeed, the
Grand Young Dames of the Club.
Over two months organising effort went into this event. Well done,
everyone. It was a great achievement and a 10th Anniversary to
remember. Who knows what the next 10 years will bring? But I feel we
can confidently predict, we will have a very strong Junior Australian
Football Club.
It augurs well for the kids, who play this great AFL game at the Newtown Club, that we have such a dedicated group of parents. Steve Black
President Newtown Junior Australian Football Club
The
Newtown Swans Football Club [NJAFC] would like to give a BIG thank you
to the sponsors of the 10th Anniversary Dinner held last Friday night. It was a huge success and the Sponsors backing made it so.

This

(9:30 – 11:30am)… Boys and Girls from U5s to U14s are
WELCOME! We encourage returning players to wear their Newtown Club T-shirts or Red and White to these events.
DON’T FORGET!
Recycle
last year’s Footie Boots… Last year our recycling program for footie
boots was a huge hit with families. Some swapped boots a couple of
times during the season as kids hit their growth spurts. It’s a great
help and a sensible thing to do to help with the spiraling cost of
outfitting our kids for their various interests as they develop. Please
bring any serviceable boots along to any of the pre-season
training/registration events. If you are donating boots you are welcome
to simply swap for another pair or if you are not swapping the cost is
just $5. Of course, this only works if we have generous families
willing to donate pre-loved boots and it is very much on a
first-in-best-dressed basis…
Talking
about best dressed… We don’t want to be caught short! This year we
would also like to ask that you donate any serviceable footie shorts
and socks to a pool which we will keep in reserve for “emergencies”. Of
course we are ordering new socks and shorts as always for the kids but
we want to have a stock in case we have a big intake of players late in
the season as we did last year for the Auskick teams. Again, please
feel free to bring these along to any registration event or any
training or game day throughout the season.
Cheer,
Cheer The Red & The White in 2009! It was great to see the ever
swelling tide of Red & White at games last year. It does fantastic
things for the kids’ team spirit… we encourage the kids and you to
continue this at as many Club events as possible… registration events,
social events, training sessions… and games of course!
Regards
Geoff Barnett - Club Secretary

Notice to Newtown Club Members – Important Dates & Changes for Season 2009
Dear Newtown Auskick/Junior/Youth AFL Families,
There
are important dates and changes proposed for Season 2009. The Club
Committee and the Football Department would like to give as much notice
as possible to players and parents of these changes. Players and
parents please note: • There will be 4 “Registration Days” during
pre-season training (in conjunction with Marrickville Council) at
Mahony Reserve, Marrickville, on the first 4 Sundays in March (1 March,
8 March, 15 March & 22 March) and training will also be available. • The Club will also hold a Gala Registration Day at Alan Davidson Oval during February 2009 (date to be confirmed). •
There will be an official Season Opening and Club Training/
Registration Day for all teams on Wednesday 4 March 2009 (although the
U13s and U14s, & others if interested, will start fitness training
on Friday 30 January 2009). (The calendar is for Friday night
pre-season fitness – this is to avoid clashes with any summer sport
weekend games/ mid week training.) • We are planning to field 7 junior & youth teams (U10s to U14s), an increase of 3 teams. •
We are planning to make greater use of Mahony Reserve at Marrickville
for Auskick and the older teams. - The nearby Borgia Community Centre
will also be available to us in inclement weather. Older Teams will be
rostered for indoor training. • Round 1 will be on Saturday 28 March 2009 (Sunday 29 March 2009 for U13 & U14).
AUSKICK • This is again from Under 5s to Under 9s (for boys and girls born 2000 – 2004) • The Under 9s will have 2 teams •
Wednesday Training for 2009 starts on Wednesday 11 March and will start
at 5.00PM not 4.30PM because coaches, parents and players have received
feedback that the 4.30 start is difficult for many families. • We
expect further growth in Auskick numbers from 105 kids this year, which
will mean they will need more space available to them at Alan Davidson
Oval. Auskick is a great nursery for the Club and is highly valued. We
have a great team of committed and dedicated parents, who continue to
act as coaches, assistant coaches, team managers, helpers and ground
managers.
JUNIOR FOOTBALL • There will be 2 x Under 10s, 2 x Under 11s and 1 x Under 12s teams. • Training starts on Wednesday 4 March 2009 with an official “Season Opening” celebration • Training will then be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5.00 – 6.30PM • Thursday Training starts on Thurs 12 March & Tuesday Training starts on Tues 28 April.
This
decision to change to Tuesdays and Thursdays for these age groups has
been made by the Football Department and the Club Committee because
there is not enough space on Alan Davidson Oval on Mondays and
Wednesdays. This is particularly so given the fact we will increase
from 4 to 7 junior and youth teams, and also because we expect Auskick
numbers to also increase. YOUTH FOOTBALL - There will again be an Under13s team and for the first time an Under 14s team. STOP PRESS -The 13s and 14s have now been merged into one U14s side for 2009. -
The news U14s side will move to Sunday football and play in a combined
Sydney City and Northern Sydney Competition. The decision by the
Greater Sydney Association to play on Sundays was made because there is
not enough time on Saturdays given the increase in Auskick and Junior
teams. The decision to play in a combined competition was made by a
majority of the 7 Sydney City teams and also the northern Sydney teams,
and the AFL. - For the U14s this will be really competitive
football, so we need to get behind the players, coaches and team. It
will involve increased travel on some weekends to northside grounds.
Teams will be in a divisional structure based on where they finished in
2008. - Fitness Training for the U13s and U14s (and Junior teams if
interested) will start on Friday 30 January 2009 followed by a Club
Social. They will continue to train on Sundays until weekday training
commences. - U13s and U14s will train on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Wednesday training will commence on Wednesday 4 March 2009 at
6.00–7.30PM and Monday training will commence on Monday 30 March 2009
at 5.00 – 6.30PM.
PLEASE NOTE: A SEPERATE WEB PAGE FOR UNDER 14s has been uploaded. Go here each week for results, news and match reports.
SCHOOL HOLIDAYS During
2009 we will hold non-compulsory “open” training sessions for U10 – U14
on Wednesday nights during the school holidays in order to keep up
player fitness and skills. For those Auskickers interested we will hold
“kick-to-kick” sessions on Wednesdays to give kids (who are not
involved in other school holiday activities or away on holiday) a
chance to have a run around if interested. CHALLENGES FOR THE NEWTOWN CLUB These
changes are both exciting and challenging for the Club and are a
reflection of the growth of the Newtown Club and AFL generally. To
organise training 4 nights a week plus Saturday and Sunday football
represents substantial change. No doubt it will cause some
inconvenience and will need fine tuning but these changes are
inevitable as the Club continues to grow. In reality, they are good
problems or challenges to face. We may attract even more players,
especially for the older teams, if we continue to demonstrate we are a
well organised Club. Sydney Uni is starting an U18 side in 2009. It
opens a pathway for older Newtown players, particularly, if there
develops an U16 team as well from Newtown and/or Sydney Uni. If we
pull together, players, parents/carers, Coaches, Team Managers and Club
Officials, then we are sure to be successful in implementing these
changes as smoothly as possible. As a Club we need more parents/carers
to help out, so please don’t wait to be asked – we need your help. 2009 CLUB COMMITTEE The results of the election for the Club Committee at the Annual General Meeting on 21 October were: President – Steve Black Vice President – Michael Neil-Smith Secretary – Geoff Barnett Treasurer – Steve Pauner Registrar – Anita O’Connell Public Officer – Chris Morgan Committee Member – Helen Moore Committee Member – Bill Nettheim Committee member - Michael Charlton
Football
Manager continues to be Chris Venville and the Auskick Coordinator, Jon
Dyster, who attend all Committee Meetings. Julie Sicco is Minute Taker
& Assistant Secretary. Congratulations to those who have been re-elected and to the new Committee members, Bill Nettheim and Michael Charlton.
RODNEY MONK – NJAFC PRESIDENT 2003 to 2008 Rodney
Monk, the former Club President, decided to resign and not seek
re-election. Rodney was President for 5 years, elected in November
2003. Rodney led a team that took the Club from fledgling status to a
more mature, better organised Club and has laid a solid foundation for
the future. He showed tremendous organising ability and introduced
fresh ideas and fresh blood to the Committee. Rod understood the needs
and desires of the Newtown community for a community Aussie Rules Club
and fought tirelessly for that position. All members should read his
final President’s Report which will be emailed together with the AGM
minutes. He steps down with our best wishes and will continue to be
part of the Club. Well done, Rod.
REGISTRATION FEES It
is inevitable that registration fees must rise, both because of
increased costs generally and the substantial changes envisioned – this
would include football jumpers and training gear for three extra junior
and youth teams, increased rent because of extra training days and game
days, use of Mahony Reserve, the Borgia Centre, etc. Fees for 2009
will be $120.00, with an early-bird rate of $100.00 for those who pay
before 31 December 2008. There will be a $10.00 discount for each
additional child in a family (i.e. registration fees will be $110.00) FOOTBALL DEPARTMENT Our
Football Manager, Chris Venville, and Auskick Coordinator, Jon Dyster,
continue to do a great job organising the Football Department. They are
the ones responsible for so much of the day-to-day football &
training activities and managing our team of coaches, assistant
coaches, team managers, helpers, ground managers etc. They did a great
job in season 2008, both satisfaction-wise for players and parents and
success-wise for the players and teams – our most successful season to
date. It is thanks to them, in particular, that the planning and
preparation for Season 2009 is well under way. COACHES AND TEAM MANAGERS 2009 Please
see the contacts page. Already many positions have been filled. We are
still looking for assistant coaches and other volunteers. Please
contact one of the committee members if you can help out in anyway
including the canteen, BBQ,jumper washing etc
As
a Committee and Football Department we are attempting to plan and
organise for the following season much earlier than usual. That is,
from the end of season 2008, rather than February/March in each year. We
hope everyone can appreciate and pull together with the changes that
are proposed. I believe we have a hard-working and dedicated Committee
and Football Department that can accomplish the changes envisioned and
can lead the Club in the exciting times ahead, both as a prosperous
Community Club and nursery for young Auskick footballers, and as a
serious Football Club for the older teams. We have a great team of
Coaches, Team Managers and Ground Managers who give so much time and
effort and all on a voluntary basis. To back this up there is an
untiring group who organise the canteen, barbeque, home game days, club
functions, the Club website, merchandising, marketing etc. Further, the
Club has a group of stalwarts, some of whom are Foundation Members,
who, although they have handed over the reins on some duties, continue
to contribute in many ways and have rich experience from which the

DON’T FORGET!
Recycle
last year’s Footie Boots… Last year our recycling program for footie
boots was a huge hit with families. Some swapped boots a couple of
times during the season as kids hit their growth spurts. It’s a great
help and a sensible thing to do to help with the spiraling cost of
outfitting our kids for their various interests as they develop. Please
bring any serviceable boots along to any of the
pre-season training/registration events. If you are donating boots you
are welcome to simply swap for another pair or if you are not swapping
the cost is just $5. Of course, this only works if we have generous
families willing to donate pre-loved boots and it is very much on a
first-in-best-dressed basis…
Talking
about best dressed… We don’t want to be caught short!
It does fantastic
things for the kids’ team spirit… we encourage the kids and you to
continue this at as many Club events as possible… registration events,
social events, training sessions… and games of course!

of the great footy that got Newtown to Minor Premiers and beat
Kellyville.

wonderful contributors all year. CONGRATULATIONS
TO ALL TEAMS FOR MAKING THE FINALS AND THEIR EFFORTS LAST WEEKEND. WE
WISH THE REMAINING TEAMS WELL THIS WEEKEND.
COME ALONG AND SUPPORT YOUR TEAMS AND CLUB.
To all the Coaches, Managers, Team Parent Helpers and Supporters - Well Done. It was a great effort.

Under 13s to merge with 14s..."Coach Hall says it will be an exciting team"
A message from Footy Manager Chris Venville 17th March 2009
Hi all, It
is with some regret that due to a negative growth in numbers in the
U13s we have made the decision to withdraw the team from the Sydney
Harbour competition for 2009. No players will be disadvantaged however
as all currently registered U13s players will be absorbed into the U14s
playing group. While
regrettable, the reasons for making this decision are sound. It is felt
that trying to include two teams in a new, Sunday competition would
spread resources too thinly & that the club would once again be
placing an undue reliance on junior players to play up. While the teams
were playing in the city competition & on the same day this was not
a major issue however with the geographic spread of the Sydney Harbour
Youth competition the club would be placing an unreasonable expectation
on players & their families. It is also noted that football is a
contact sport & that any injury can cost a team dearly, more so in
a team that is short on numbers. It is further felt that by
incorporating the U13 & U14 playing group the club & coaches
will be better able to focus their resources on developing the team as
a whole which will ultimately lead to a secure & more successful
season for all involved. While
I am aware that some parents may have concerns about the competition it
should be noted that the U14s will be playing in Division 2 of the
Sydney Harbour U14 competition with all but 2 of the city teams. The
standard of football is anticipated to be at a similar level to that
experienced in 2008. While there will be challenges for all, with a
greater depth to the playing group individual players will have the
opportunity to continue to develop at a managed pace rather than being
expected to play beyond their ability or skill level. Trevor
Hall will continue his involvement with the team along with Jack Lawson
from the Sydney University Football Club. In addition we will also be
gaining further coaching staff to assist with the development of the
players. We
will have a brief meeting prior to the start of training on Wednesday
so can all players ensure that they are at Alan Davidson no later than
5.30 pm. If any of you have any concerns feel free to raise them with me at training on Wednesday or via return email. Kind regards Chris Venville Football Manager NJAFC

Hi everyone, The
AFL, for various reasons, has been very late this year in supplying the
Clubs of our Region with the draw of fixtures for the season. Even at
this late date it is still not completely finalised. Round 1 begins this Saturday 28 March for Auskick - Under 12s and Sunday 29 March for Under 14s. We do know these will be away fixtures as Alan Davidson Oval is not available. Please check with Coaches and Team Managers at training this week where you will be playing on the weekend. Also, the draw will be placed on the Newtown Swans Website once it is finalised.
I know this will cause some inconvenience but these are circumstances beyond our Club's and the other Clubs' control. Please make every effort to attend your games and represent your Club. I
believe it is timely for all those associated with the Newtown Club -
Players, Parents, Coaches, Team Managers and Club Officials - to
familiarise themselves with the AFL Code of Conduct. [Click here to download the Word doc.] Please read it carefully as it applies to you and everyone associated with the Club. Parents please go through this policy with your child. These

RAINS AFFECTS THIS WEEKEND MATCH TIMES. 6.30 pm Friday 3rd April
Under 14s match will go ahead as scheduled at Bruce Purser Reserve- CLICK HERE- remember to put your clocks back one hour tonight.
8.20pm today - Auskick news Hi all
Many apologies for the late notice, but due to the closure of Jubilee Oval
at Glebe all games have had to be re-organised.
Those responsible for arranging games have been working hard find an
available venue and to re-arrange as many games as possible.
Assuming there is no more inclement weather, all Auskick will be playing at
Bat & Ball oval in Moore Park - where we were last week.
This will be our last opportunity to play before the school holidays and our
next scheduled game on Sunday 26th April
To all new parents : it must seem to you that we are a little disorganized.
This year's draw has been unusually difficult to finalise (I believe that
rapid growth of numbers throughout the Sydney region and changes to the
availability of some grounds are the main reasons) and the weather has not
made anybody's job any easier this week, either.
We apologise for any inconvenience that the late info is causing. Please be
patient - all should be on track after the holidays.
Regards
Geoff Barnett - Club Secretary / Manager U8s

Fitness Training for the 2009 Season has commenced
What to bring: Runners, football boots, spare clothing & your team mates.
It is also essential to bring plenty of water as hydration is very important in this heat.
The
sessions are run by Michael Wood from Camperdown Fitness. Michael is a
very experienced personal trainer and has worked with extensively with
youth fitness and as the U12s, 13s &14s move into stronger
competitions in 2009 fitness will be a key component of the season. The
first session saw a good attendance (especially from the U14s) however
we are keen to build on these numbers & see more of the younger
players attend.
The only cost for these fun sessions is a commitment to improve your game!

Newtown Swans and also RE-REGISTER to play for the next age group in
2008! The Club is growing and this year we expect to field teams from
U5s through to U13s.
The
first registration date is this Saturday but we have 2 other days as
well so hopefully everyone will be able to get down to Alan Davidson
Oval (ADO) on one of them. Registration
Days are just as much about rekindling friendships that have been
sweating it out over the summer of cricket, nippers, tennis and those
long, lazy, crazy summer days at the beach.
The three Registration Days are:
Saturday, 09 February 10am – 2pm ADO, “club house” Sunday, 17 February 10am – 2pm ADO, “club house”
And our Major Registration Event on
TUESDAY, 26 February 4:30pm – 7pm ADO, “club house” * Meet players from the SYDNEY SWANS Great opportunity to get an autograph or two (see attached flyer) * FREE Sausage Sizzle and a drink for the Kids Expect to see many of your team mates and parents/careers from last year * Pre-Trained Footy Boots for sale (only $5 a pair) or straight SWAP for anyone donating a pair of boots that already know fun and glory ALL FOOTBALL BOOT DONATIONS WILL BE GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED so clear out your cupboards and fill ours! * Club T-shirts for sale
The
Registration Fee has been maintained at 2007 levels… only $100 for the
first player and $90 for each subsequent player from the same family.
Payment can only be accepted as CASH or CHEQUE (made payable to Newtown
Junior Australian Football Club Inc). It
is much easier if you are able to bring the exact money when you
register so change is not such an issue… or write your cheque out ahead
of time for ease.
Ready Reckoner for Fees payable for 1 or more players from the same family unit
Proof of Age is required for any NEW players registering so bring along a birth certificate, passport, etc when you register.
If
you know someone who might like to join a great club for 2008 why not
encourage them to come along to register with you… it’s definitely a
case of the more the merrier! Your endorsement is the best
recommendation and the most successful way the Club has of recruiting
new players and family supporters and fostering the club spirit that
has become the Newtown Swans!
Looking forward to seeing you at one of the registration events!
Regards Geoff Barnett - Club Secretary

President’s Report and Resignation. Rodney Monk. 7.30pm, October 18th 2008.
Newtown Junior Australian Rules Club Inc. AGM held at @newtown RSL. I became President in 2003 our clubs 5th year with about 45 members. We had moved from our former home ground Alexandria Park Oval to Alan Davidson Oval (ADO) that year. I remember foundation members Kerrie Newell selling lucky numbers whilst husband Brad kept stats. Michelle Stewart ran the canteen and Simon Lonergan cooked at the BBQ. Jeff Thomas, Mark Bateman and were coaches of the 10’s or 9’s and Geoff Odgers was Auskick manager.
2004 Chris Venville as football manager and I put up the NSWAFL donated posts and painted ADO with its first Aussie Rules marking. Brendan Read built of one of the best club websites in Junior Aussie Rules. Membership grew to about 50 in ‘03 BUT we’d lost a lot of great young grade players and parents due to self interest and poor handling of club politics and our inability to provide teams to all players. My first Committee was Angela Greenaway (V.P), Richard Acheson (Treasurer), Margie Dyson (Sec), Phillipa Stevens (Registrar). Mark Bateman kept coaching and others joined him – some still with us others not. The parents of the current U 13’s were to become the vanguard; keeping their kids team together amidst the falling away of a few U12 and 13 teams, we must keep them as 14’s next year.
Approaching 2009 we will have more than our current 180 members comprising a bigger than ever Auskick, 2 U10's, 2 U12's, U13's and U 14's. We plan to sponsor an U16's in partnership with Sydney Uni ANFC and other members of the City Aussie Rules community. None of this would have been possible without the extraordinary input of our many volunteers and I thank them all especially Chris as head of the football dept. Our long service has provided the club a base for the enjoyment of inclusion of all allowing difference of opinion, skill and volunteering.
Most of my Presidential work was away from the paddock where I just helped out, listened, barracked and watched the Ground being used by more each year. My first “beyond family” contribution to this club was to make the big run through banner in 2002 from which evolved my club logo design. I put together most of the art & text for club printing for five years, attended Committee meetings, occasionally took minutes, kicked around the park with kids. I rang the Mayors office to stave off an attempt by a first grade outer Sydney team bump us off our Home Ground. For my first three Presidential years I stuffed envelopes with xmas cards and letters, pasted addresses and stamps on them and mailed out to members and supporters. I spoke at school assemblies and sent bookmarks, flyers and posters to schools and youth centre’s in our draw area. I had a set of ADO keys – I live nearby. At the Rose in Erko in 2004 I met with Jason McClennan the Pres. of Syd Uni A.N.F.C to talk about our community and initiated our two clubs liaising to improve our player’s skills and their footy pathway into adulthood.
Footy club is more than footy - I encouraged our off field canteen and BBQ. Club merchandise gives us greater presence and awareness in the larger community and revenue from both about equals income from membership fees. Helen Moore has passed the baton of a well structured canteen to Tracy Salked who has it running very effectively, whilst Treasurer Steve Pauner has evolved a merchandise/information table into a profit centre. I asked and got @ Newtown RSL to give us a $2,000 community grant for each of the past three years and made plenty of passes to others in the club that resulted in goals being achieved. In supporting the Comp & our clubs commeradery I suggested our coaches be shouted to Drummoyne Club’s 10th Anniversary event to have a feed, listen to “Sheed’s” and chat with colleagues whilst enjoying a night out “on the club” as a thank you for the great job they do. I also had the caps embroidered for the U10's as grandfinalist’s in 2005 and arranged the same for 2008’s U10’s; our club’s first ever Premiers. I expressed gratitude to Simon Lonergan for his continuing generosity with donated t-shirts and others who provided their professional expertise gratis. I grab the tongs on the BBQ if Bob needs a hand as I did for John Kovacevic and Richard Acheson in the past. I have washed jumpers, picked up the rubbish, bookmarks, stickers and field paint. My son sold raffle tickets at our ADO grand-final day and at Marrickville Metro when I with other parents promoted this club in its mission to provide a safe and caring environment in which young people can enjoy the social and physical benefits of learning to play Aussie Rules footy. I backed up on the BBQ or canteen and generally supported the coaches and managers if I could. To build a unique club image I suggested the red v on white with flying N embedded jumper for older players and arranged to have the first set of perpetual shields made and engraved for the club. I also pushed for the addition of extra grade team awards and this year got the Coaches and team player awards added along with the “Blood Stained Angel” medal. A club is more than footy and. Mic Conway brought a smile to many a face and enthralled the kids at this years presentation day but my most cherished memory is singing “My Island Home” with club mum Christine Anu at our "posts inauguration" event in 2003
We need a social subcommittee to help make the club fuller in the activities it fosters and provides. I salute Sandra Nadel, Helen Moore, some coaches and a few others who have organized extra to football club activities. Many members are trying to balance work, family and social time and a good club can help facilitate recreational activities which round out our lives – a night at the theatre or a picnic on the oval together are fun. That’s why we recreate. The home game is and shall always be the main event however why aren’t we organizing mini carnivals of face-painting, kicking comps and sack races regularly? Jon Dyster and Auskick parents did it this year and the kids loved it. Trevor Hall and Brendan read ran a similar event two seasons ago and everyone loved it. Young kids like to see their older club mates play and such initiatives must stay & grow. I don’t expect coaches, Managers, Committee members and Canteen Coordinators to do it. C’mon in volunteers co-ordinator a role to ensure club moments all will want and enjoy.
We have a team based management structure and the club teams can suggest preferences from trophy to team numbers. Any parent or child can offer opinion and idea. I would like to see less focus on win and more on inclusion and have suggested that the final weekend of the school holidays game be made into a friendly in which teams can be evened up and the game played for enjoyment rather than penalizing paid up players who cant make that game due to events beyond there control. A radical idea for some perhaps but an idea I believe to be in the best interests of the child and one which gives all players a chance to team with champs or losers, learn skills, make friends. Footy is greater than win or lose.
The challenge for the club is to retain and recruit members into to teenage teams whilst maintaining our Auskick and junior grades. Much of this will centre on the commitment of the club to providing substance to its mission – the key indicator will be member numbers and their happiness in connecting at the oval. Support will come through the provision of pathways into young adulthood and opportunities to grow into a broader social network via the opportunities the club provides. If these areas are healthy finances, volunteers and events will flow in abundance. Michael Neil Smith & I see a true CLUB room where perpetual shields and trophies are on display and a wet weather training facility as key assets the club should aim for. Perhaps this could be planned for at ADO ; all weather training and a club room or perpetually leased at the Borgia Centre. Whatever form it should be a club priority.
It's been a pleasure to foster and be part of a shared spirit of volunteering at what is a truly fabulous community asset - The Newtown Junior Australian Rules Club. The people who are doing something for the club should not be burdened with more work and it is too easy to knock the efforts that they make. We should find the people are rarely seen or look for the people doing little but dropping off the kids and picking them and a trophy up – smoke them out of the car with a smile get them committed to the club and organize them into the volunteer team.
The club committee structure should remain unchanged – invite the football manager and Auskick Coordinator to join but don’t insist these hard working volunteers do more, rather support them administratively and supplement philosophically by providing vision and social values. Let’s attract people skilled in administration and design; wise operators who will fashion our philosophy and friendships, support our coaches and managers and bring the joy of playing in our teams to young people. We are a community club and a club for our community.
I haven’t sought notoriety through footy - I’d prefer to make my social mark as a parent, teacher and artist. I don’t think footy is GREAT – to me it’s a pastime and pathway for the physically gifted sportsperson. To most it is to do our best, be mentored, experience team play and an attempt to provide alternate aspirations to the thug. I would like to thank all committee members past and present, especially treasurer Steve Pauner, Steve Black, Helen Moore and registrar Anita O’Connel for your support this year and last. I offer support and extend my best wishes to the next President and Committee in maintaining a forum pleasurable in ambience and wholesome in vision making decisions that make better this children’s club, its members and broader community. I thank my family Giselle, Milan and Allegra and friends who helped stuff those envelopes after training. I’d apologise to Players, opponents and Supporters for embarrassment I caused by indulging in the great Aussie tradition of barracking, too bad; “C’arn the mighty Newtown Young Bloods”.
I now resign and declare the Presidency open.
“Blood Stained Angel” Many wondered about my idea for creating the award I provide this information. The award attempts to give the Club Committee a mechanism to pay homage to individuals it deems have given “well beyond the required” in serving the club. My idea for the name came from committee discussions about our nickname.
For me the best nicknames would be the Newtown Angels JAFC or the slightly unpalatable but stirring (remember Paul Roos "Bloods" after the GF win in 05?) - Newtown Young(?) Bloods JAFC as I am keen for the club to carve its own identity outside the AFL club that plays in Sydney.
I remember the Newtown team of the 1960's, whose history we have claimed and perpetuate, being called the "Bloods" or "Angels" at local games (I was a St George supporter then). However many people like the name Swans and I note graphic designers have copied the Swans Opera House logo for our website and Auskick Awards - a disappointment to me personally however probably not to (or noticed by) many. So in the final analysis I don't mind so long as we assist our players to enjoy playing and learning footy in a safe and caring environment (club).
In a book on the history of South Melbourne ("Plugger and the Mighty Swans", Jim Main 1996) the original nickname is the "Blood Stained Angels" or "Angels" or "Bloods". "It was during this period (1930's) South Melbourne first used the nickname "the Swans". The name was conceived by "Sporting Globe" writer Hec de Lacy, who suggested South had so many West Australians on its list that the club should change its nickname from the "Bloods" or "Blood Stained Angels" to the "Swans". The nickname stuck." (pg. 23). So much for "tradition", I have also heard anecdotally that South were the first VFL club to recruit Indigenous players from W.A. and with WA’s emblem being the black Swan an association was formed and supporters call “go you black swans” was heard to issue from the mouths of barracking fans.
The colours (and ideal of fighting for an idea of heaven?) come from the Crusades - hence St George, Angels etc.; Blood and Purity. "History records that in the First Crusade Bohemund I, a Norman lord, had red crosses cut from his mantles and distributed to the 10,000 crusaders, who wore them as a distinctive badge on their garments....In the course of history, red and white alternated as the national colours of France and England...and Canada's" and Switzerland, Poland, Indonesia and many a sporting team. www.canadianheritage.gc.ca/ PROGS/CPSC-CCSP/sc-cs/o4_e.cfm - 9k

A message from the Football manager.
Hi all, Firstly,
thanks to all of you for the assistance that you have provided in
making this one of the most successful seasons in the club’s history.
Four teams in the finals & an U10s premiership is a huge
achievement & is further proof that we are moving in the right
direction. Sam Lonergan-Stewart from our U13s was Runner Up Best &
Fairest in Sydney City & has been selected for the Pigeons squad to
play in the state carnival at Narrandera in October. Numbers are up,
especially in Auskick, & there seems to be plenty of positive
feedback with regard to 2009. However there are some important housekeeping duties to perform: Cleanup
day at ADO. All jumpers & other club property needs to be returned
to storage at ADO & everything in the store needs to go into the
office for the off season. I suggest tomorrow afternoon, Wednesday 3rd
September at ADO from about 5.15.
Season review will be at
the Warren View Hotel on Thursday 18th September at 7.30 pm. If you
want to have some input into the planning process for 2009 please
attend. At the very least I expect all senior coaches to be available
for this meeting.
Presentation Day is Sunday 21st September
but I need to have all complete team lists with correct spelling to the
trophy engraver by the end of this week. Please email them to me by
Thursday afternoon at the latest.
U10s, 11s, 12s & 13s
need to confirm separately with me their respective award winners.
B&F, B&F Runner Up, Most Improved, Coach’s Award & Team
(Manager’s) award. I have some names but not all.
After
School Auskick starts at Mahoney Reserve in Marrickville tomorrow
afternoon. Jon & I were aiming to make some club representation as
part of recruitment for 2009. It may also be that some can’t have
enough football.
Once again, thanks for your help this year. Cheers Chris Venville Football Manager
Note : A formal Team shot of the 2008 Grand Finalists - Under10s will be taken by Brendan Read at 10 am. Please be there at 9.45 am

A message from the Club President
2nd September 2008 Dear Coaches and Managers,
I
am taking this opportunity to write to thank you, on behalf of the Club
for the wonderful role you played as mentor to our young members
throughout 2008. You have provided support to our young players and
shown that our club is a vehicle for children’s engagement in footy as
an organised social and physical culture that exists outside of the
family and school.
Recently my son received a letter of thanks
for participating in the "umpire group" from the City Association from
Umpire's Coach Paul O'Loughlin. It reminded me of what an important
role coaches and managers play in elevating one’s confidence and in the
enjoyment of life which young people seek. Being thanked for a great
effort and congratulated on your achievements by the adult members of
your team is “the icing on the cake” to a great year. Being asked to
return and continue to be an important part of next year’s team can
provide a focus for dreams and hopes and confidence a continuation of
important friendships and roles.
Retention of members is at
least as important as recruitment, which is my second reason for
writing: to encourage you to make personal contact with each member of
your team and thank them for their participation this season. I suggest
you compliment them on their growth as a player, suggest things they
could practice and encourage them to be involved again next year and
also ask if they have friends who can join. Newtown JAFC is an
important part of our young members personal growth into mature
adults. We train and play to win but even when don’t we are mates and
are there for each other. That important win won’t show on the
scoreboard.
SEE YOU ALL AT PRESENTATION DAY ON THE 21ST
Cheers, Rod Monk

Former Newtown Swans player signs for the Brisbane Lions
The Vodafone Brisbane Lions have just signed a third NSW Scholarship player in 15 year-old Richard Newell from Kingsford.
The
180cm and 65kg midfielder/ruck-rover models himself on Chris Judd and
lists our own Lions co-captain Simon Black among his favourite AFL
players.
An
all-round athlete, Richard has placed in national junior athletics
competitions over 800m and 1500m and played school basketball for
Cranbrook around pursuing his love for AFL football.
Richard began playing football as a six year-old with the Newtown Swans as part of the AFL Auskick program and has since developed into a prominent midfielder with the East Sydney Bulldogs.
The
Year 10 student at Cranbrook Secondary School in Sydney is visiting the
Club this weekend to meet some of the Lions senior players and
familiarise himself with the Gabba and its facilities. He will also
have the opportunity to watch the team live in action as they take on
North Melbourne at Gold Coast Stadium on Saturday night in Round 18 of
the AFL Premiership Season.
“I’ve met Simon Black, Jonathan Brown, Josh Drummond and a lot of the other players which has been good,” Newell said.
“The
scholarship will be really good for my development and it helps build a
pathway for the AFL. It will definitely help me understand what is
expected of me and what sort of training I need to do to get the best
out of myself.”
“It’s reassuring to know that if you’re good enough, you can make it.”
Richard joins fellow New South Welshmen James Brain and Jack Lawson as the Lions’ three NSW scholarship players for 2008.
“I’ve
been to a couple of Sydney University games and seen Jack play, but I
haven’t seen James play yet because he’s been busy training and playing
with the NSW U16s at the State Championships,” he said.
The
AFL Scholarship Program was designed in 2006 to attract young athletes
from the Greater Sydney region to Australian Rules football by
providing them with a direct path to the elite AFL competition.
Through
the AFL Scholarship Program, the AFL talent program in NSW / ACT is
hoping to contribute 10% of the National Talent Pool by 2010.

Newtown Swans have their cakes and eat them too 3rd May 2008
Today was our first home game and the results on the field were mixed although every team played well and all had a good time. However there wasone clear winner and it kept on winning the hearts and conquering allcomers all day. Every player, parent, friend (and family dog) got a liftout of it. Our canteen and BBQ continue to be the competition's best! Thanks to all those who worked to make today's canteen and BBQ sowonderful. You won everyone's heart via the taste bud and a full tummywhilst also fueling the footy by providing extra revenue for the on fieldteams. Oh, and the cupcakes with the jelly raspberry "V" - mmmmmmmmm -what a great item! So great my daughter gave mine to her playmate. Rats! I hope there are more next week. cheers, Rod Monk

Auskick Update - Training 15th July 2008
It has been agreed that due to the school holidays this week we will run an informal training at Allan Davidson Oval for Auskick players this Wednesday, 16th July 2008 at 4.30pm. This means that coaches will be available and we will run kick-to-kick and, numbers permitting, somepractice games. There will also be the opportunity to have a run around and keep up skills and fitness levels already attained during the year.
If you are unable to make training, do not worry, we will kick off again formally for the "run home" to the end of the season next Wednesday 23rd July.
Game Day - Saturday 19th July
This weekend we will play Glebe and Concord at Jubilee Oval (our first visit there this year). Age groups will play at the usual starting times. Again, it is important to let your coach or manager know if you cannot play before Saturday so that we can ensure that we get numbers right for match ups with the other Clubs.
For Under 10 - 13 players, coaching and game day schedules will be as has been advised by your coach or manager.
For further information please check the website or contact your team manager.
Regards, Jon

MORE 2008 REGISTRATION NEWS
Hi All,
The
2008 season is upon us so it’s time to get down to our glorious home
ground and rekindle the Footie Fever by registering NEW players for
Newtown Swans and also RE-REGISTER to play for the next age group in

The

Eastern Suburbs &, sadly, the U12s reaching the end of a
groundbreaking season. There is, however, more work to be done. along for a few post season drinks as we tally the best & fairest
votes for our U10, U11 & U12 teams. Coaches & managers, make
sure that you have your envelopes ready &, sorry, no kids. Saturday 1st September Sydney City Grand Final Day, Trumper Park, Paddington. Sunday 23rd September NJAFC Presentation Day, Alan Davidson Oval The
final big day. I will be organizing the trophies & it is expected
that 1 parent from each age group will be involved in organizing this
event. With regard to the trophies I will have the B&F winners however I will require the following: - 1 x ‘Most improved player’ from U10, U11 & U12s. -
Complete team lists with correct spelling of names for each age group
(including any players that have played up into grade teams). I
will need this information by the 26th August so that the trophies will
be ready in plenty of time. It would be most embarrassing for a team to
not have any awards because someone couldn’t get the job done. Please
submit the information in either word or excel thanks via e-mail. Thanks again for your involvement this season, as ever, it’s been a great year. Kind regards Chris Venville Football Manager NJAFC
Well done to Under 12s player Thomas Killingly for his efforts in this years City to Surf Competition. Note his 50 Game jersey!

Records of former Newtown Club 19/07/2007
Hello all Newtown Swans members
I am trying to track down vote getters in the Phelan Medal since its inception
and players who have played 100+ senior games of football in Sydney . I
wonder if you have any idea of what happened to all the records of the
former Newtown Club. Perhaps there are records, or people, that may be able to help me.
