The Under 16s - FOR 2010
from page one...
Newtown Swans U16s Sam Lonergan-Stewart and Tom Killingly put a big
foot forward in the latter part of this season by both playing for Sydney University U18 team in the Sydney AFL Premier Cup competition in addition to their duties as gun midfielders for our U16 team.
The link with Sydney Uni was forged earlier this year when our U16 team
started training with the Uni U18s team on Thursday nights at ADO.
The Uni team finished third on the ladder in the Premier Cup comp after the regular season, and is a team with six GWS listed players and a number of players on scholarships with AFL clubs. They are a formidable unit.
The big week Sam & Tom have had this week (on Monday night both were on the podium at the Greater Sydney Juniors presentation night to accept Best & Fairest trophies for the GSJ Under 16s competition) was made even bigger last night when Sam was selected to play with the full-strength Sydney Uni U18s in their second semi final clash against the East Coast Eagles at Bruce Purser Reserve at Rouse Hill tomorrow.
Both boys are trailblazers for our club, as they are the first ever current Newtown
Swans players to play at this level of footy and the first onto the new pathway from Newtown to senior footy.
Congratulations to both players !

U16s
REPS CARNIVAL REPORT
Newtown U16s players Sam Lonergan-Stewart and Tom
Killingly both put in very good performances in windy conditions at the U16s
Reps Carnival yesterday at Blacktown Olympic Park.
Playing for Sydney City U16s in a squad of 25, Sam mostly
as an on-baller and Tom mostly in half back line, both boys saw a lot of game
time. A gruelling schedule that saw them play four 50 minute
games (2 25 minute halves) in the space of seven hours against mostly older
opposition, their fitness and resilience to some very heavy hits was tested
time and again.
They both came through with flying colours, and are a
testament to the amount of training and fitness work they do.
The Sydney City team struggled in the first two games, as
clearly they weren’t used to playing together, but gelled well by their third
game (which they drew) and their final game (a solid win against the
Central Coast team).
Both Sam and Tom saw a lot of the ball and contributed in
the goal-scoring department, and were a credit to themselves and their club.

A letter from a Club veteran....
Longtime club stalwarts witnessed one of the greatest days and games in club history as the pioneering 16s team nearly pulled off an incredible upset win against top side Glebe in appalling conditions at ADO yesterday. Severely undermanned due to injuries to a quarter of their regular playing list, the 16s together with half a dozen hardcases from the 14s stayed with Glebe on the scoreboard right to the end hitting the lead briefly in the third quarter before a mounting injury list, which meant they often had less players on the field than the opposition and no bench, took it’s toll.
The courage and attack on the ball and man in the rain and on the muddy lake that was much of ADO that the team showed yesterday against an older team (with four Pigeons players in it’s ranks) was football at it’s finest.
To both teams credit the game was played in good spirits. Glebe being our closest team “neighbour”, many of the players know each though school and representative footy.
Earlier in the day the 14s carried on their winning way this season braving the dismal conditions with a comfortable win over Wests, and are now 4-and-2 and third on the ladder.
That six of their number stood tall and volunteered to go out into the rain and mud again to help out the 16s in the titanic two hour struggle against Glebe says a lot about the character of that group. After 10 years at the club, and watching two sons play close to 250 games between them in the Red & White, I for one can think of few greater days in the club’s history.

 Well done Sam...
Congratulations to our U16 captain Sam Lonergan-Stewart, who yesterday was selected in the Sydney South Zone Pigeons U15 team to compete in the AFL (NSW & ACT) Under 15 & Under 16 State Zone Trials to be held at St Ignatius College Riverview April 11 to 16.
This is Sam’s third consecutive Pigeons selection.
The U15 & U16 State Zone Trials are the highest level of football for these age groups and the major showcase and opportunity for the best footballers in the state to display their talents. Talent scouts from all AFL clubs attend the trials.
Entry to the Trials is free, it’s on in the second week of the April school Holidays, and this year is conveniently located in Sydney, and we encourage everyone at the club to go along to check out some great footy action and see what may lie ahead.
The U13 & U14 State Zone Trials will be held later in the year. Selection for the train-on squads is usually made after the U13 & U14 Reps carnival in July. We encourage every Newtown player who is trying out for the City Reps teams in the next four weeks to “leave nothing in the shed”.
The road to the State Zone Trials is a long one, but a particularly rewarding journey. Not just for the players who eventually earn a Pigeons jumper, but for every young player who tries out, as they receive the benefit of high level training along the way and the satisfaction that comes with “mixing it” with the best.
