Newtown Whites Under 10s - Round 3 Match Report by
Arden Fast
In a tight scrappy encounter at the Kennel, Nico’s Whites emerged as top dogs
against Glebe to register back to back wins.
With the welcome addition of 3 players to last weeks team - Clare, William and
new South Aussie recruit Andreas - bolstering the strength across the park, the
Whites proved too strong over 4 quarters for the physical Greyhounds outfit.
In coolish overcast conditions perfect for footy the win was a victory for team
structure and commitment by all the players. Everyone was accountable for their
opponents and the team built on last weeks hard running team play.
Will S led from the front making numerous breaking runs and setting up play all
across the ground, he was supported in the hard contests by Angela, Ben &
Andreas while Jack & Wesley combined again with speed on the flanks and set
up numerous opportunities. Tom, William, Archie and, Linus ran hard to put the
pressure on across the park and Andreas was a leader in defence showing great
positional awareness, supported by Mitchell, Ben and Angus in shutting down
Glebe forays.
With Clare dominating in the ruck and with Will, Wes & Jack dominating the
clearances numerous forward opportunities were created and taken by Angela who
snapped two early goals, Jack snapped two more, Clare kicked a boomer and Ben
capped off a great game with his first major of the season (sorry I’m sure
missed some goalkickers). All in all it was a very pleasing win - a whole team effort.
Nico and the team left the park with a fair degree of confidence as they look
forward to a tough match in Round 4 against Maroubra Black at ADO.
A week
is a long time in footy
Around
the grounds with Arden Fast
A new season of footy at Newtown opened up on a beautiful day at Alan
Davidson on 17 April with the new Whites lineup all charged up for 2010 with
coach Nico and assistant James in charge.
Unfortunately the Newtown boys and girl (Angela) were under the pump
from the word go with the free flowing and well drilled Easts Blues leaving the
Swans clutching at thin air on many occasions. There were a number of good
individual efforts across the day with Wesley and Jack running hard and working
to create opportunities, Tom resolute in
defence and across the park and Angela inspiring with
her attack on the ball and the man.
Nico rung the changes but to no avail as Easts continued to break out of
the centre with ease, dominating in the ruck and clearances. Perry battled hard against the taller timber and
after having backed up from the U9s earlier it was a top effort, Will also tried hard and put his body on the line
countless times against 2 and 3 Easts opponents. Linus, Joe (also backing up from
the 9s), Ben, Che, Mitchell and William all had great
passages and battled hard but there was no system to our play and it ended up a
pretty lopsided affair. Wesley bobbed up
for our first (minor) score off the boot in the last term but by then the Dogs
had well and truly bolted.
Match report for April 24 Newtown
White U10 v Wests at Drummoyne
They often say a week is a long time in footy and with Nico and
James having run the team ragged with an intensive Wednesday night session, the
fans were hoping for a much better showing against the Wests boys as they filed
into picturesque Drummoyne Oval on Sat 24th April.
Wests jumped us from the start of the first term and had a couple of
early goals up but then the team started to settle and find some rhythm and
team play. Jack was running hard to
break the lines and Angela was
showing great poise in the centre and great hands – shades of Diesel Williams
in his heyday. Tom pulled down a
great contested mark and with Wesley and
Will getting into the play we ended the term in better shape, the team was
starting to get confidence.
Over the next two terms we really worked back into the game, it was
really pleasing how Ben, Caillin,
Archie, Angus, Rohan and Luca (playing up from the 9s) stuck to their
tasks, manning up well, looking for space and team mates – it was starting to
look like we had a real footy team out there. Wesley drilled the first goal of the season in the second term and
the heads lifted ‘we can do this’, Tom pulled
in another screamer, Angela was
dominating at the stoppages.
After the long break Mitchell
took a great grab, Rohan, Jack and Linus
made great forward runs and then Will who
had been working tirelessly around the ground popped up with a great goalmouth
snap after some fantastic burrowing/bullocking work in the forward pocket. Not
long after Archie sent a long bomb
in which only just collected the post and suddenly we had all the momentum at ¾
time.
The last quarter was brilliant as Newtown piled on the pressure and the
floodgates broke open. With Archie,
Mitchell and Caillin operating
the lockdown in defence and With Wesley,
Jack, Ben, Will and Angela dominating
the midfield and up forward – finding open space and winning the clearances
in-tight, the opportunities started to rack up for our hungry forward line. Angus took full advantage -and marked strongly and drilled home Threegreat goals – one after the other – the fans were in seventh
heaven. Linus slammed home another
and then another great passage of team play saw Luca dob another from long range.
At the end Nico and James had beaming smiles and the team sang out Cheer
Cheer The Red & The White in great voice. Yes a week can be a long time in
footy – but when you play as a team gee its great fun!
